Welcome to the combined Yearling/Autumn Griffiths Racing Magazine. Our last edition saw the stable looking toward the Autumn campaigns of The Quarterback, Girl in Flight, Singularity and Pure Addiction, all being aimed at quality races.

Despite some setbacks it was still a big thrill for owners and the stable to saddle up The Quarterback in the Group 1 Australian Guineas. Unfortunately things didn’t go according to plan on the day but it has been particularly satisfying for me to have horses like these that have been able to step up to a higher level of racing.

My focus this year is to emphasise the importance of upgrading owners existing portfolio’s, this includes regularly replacing retired horses, or those that have reached their limit on the ultra competitive Victorian Racing circuit, with younger up and coming horses. As the old saying goes sometimes you have to turn over enough rocks before you find diamonds.

Other than promoting ownership in general I would also like to see owners increasing their winning chances by parlaying their investment over a few horses. We can structure ownership packages that can make this possible as well as helping find the right horse for each person’s budget and interest. With the introduction of 20-member partnerships, you can own and race a 5% interest for as little as $45per week.

We also encourage like-minded groups to come together such as families, over 40’s, under 40’s, girls & guys and sporting clubs to put together a group and race an entire horse together. This has been a popular incentive in the past, with many owners passing on great reports about how horse ownership brings their families and social groups together.

The 2014 sales season began in January when Shiranee and myself ventured to the Gold Coast to attend the

Magic Million Sales. We were able to secure a beautiful filly by the highly sought after stallion Starspangledbanner and a precocious colt by Written Tycoon. I then headed to Sydney for the Inglis Classic sale and bought two colts, by Bel Esprit & Myboycharlie.

Oaklands Junction once again became a hive of activity in the first week of March with the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. I love this sale, it is my main area for purchasing yearlings. This is largely due to the majority of horses on offer being Super Vobis qualified,so we are able to take advantage of the fantastic bonus’ on offer to owners. We walked away from the sale with 9 yearlings by proven Stallions such as Not A Single Doubt, Danzero, Bel Esprit, Redoute’s Choice, Encosta De Lago, Teofilo, Choisir and Henry The Navigator, not to mention the popular new kid on the block Denman.

Highly regarded Bloodstock Agent, Peter Ford, famous in recent times for his involvement with Black Caviar and All Too Hard’s dam Helsinge, and also Chris Blomely of McKeever Bloodstock – London, both assisted me in the selection process this year. We have worked extremely hard to find the best athletes with compatible pedigrees to enhance our chances of success.

I am driven for further success and although we consistently finish high up in the National Premiership I am yet to win that coveted Group 1 that I so desire. I am positive that my current plans and strategies will enable me to do so.

As always I look forward to discussing yearlings with you, however we have also recently employed the services of Cheryl McCarthy known to many of my current owners as a part owner of Angelic Light, Cascabel, Who Stole My Sock and other younger horses yet to hit the racetrack. Cheryl has joined the team and will assist in putting ownership groups together. Cheryl has been doing this in her own right for several years, and we continually hear favourable reports on how much fun participants are having after joining these groups. Cheryl has over 30 years experience in racing and her motivation comes from just wanting to participate in an industry she is passionate about. Cheryl’s involvement, working alongside David Scanlon in assisting you with any yearling/ownership questions, will enable me to concentrate on the preparation, management and training of the horses.

Private inspections of yearlings can be organised via our office should you or your group wish to do so.

In addition to our Yearling/Autumn magazine there will be an online DVD presentation available for download which features each of the yearlings individually. Hard copies are also available from our office by calling 03 5995 2444 or by emailing [email protected].

We hope you enjoy our magazine and I look forward to meeting and discussing further racehorse ownership opportunities with you.

We also understand owners desire to be regularly informed about your horses progress. We take great pride in providing a communication service that we believe second to none. This commences with a report on your horses condition the day he/she arrives in the stable with regular updates throughout their racing preparation.

These reports include the following;

- Spelling report (horses are generally spelled relatively close to the stables which allows clients to visit their horses regularly should they choose to do so. It also enables Robbie to inspect horses on a 3–4 week basis- Weekly updates- Trial times/information- Post Race/Trial reports on horses performance- Raceday information including time, race number, barrier draw, Robbie’s comments- Post Race summary, recovery and future plans

STAFF PROFILESSARAH MORAN

How long have you worked for Griffiths Racing? 2 years. My partner Sinead worked for Robbie for 10 years on and off which is how I came to be in the right place at the right time when the job came up. He and Shiranee initially sponsored Sinead so she could stay in the country, so I guess we have alot to thank them for!Favourite Horse of all time? Sunline, but Saintly and Super Impose are in the photo. Favourite Horse at Griffiths Racing? Dash for Viz and Horacio Favourite Holiday Destination? SpainFavourite TV show? SeinfeldHobbies? I enjoy watching pretty much any sport. I’d prefer watching live but it can be a bit hard to get to Premier League or NBA gamesFavourite Past time? Hanging out with Sinead and our dog Storm, doing nothing. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen muchFavourite Movie? Lock, Stock and Two Smoking BarrelsFavourite Drink? Scotch and dryFavourite Food? Michael Jordan, George Clooney and John Singleton. Has the potential to be a very late nightWhat did you do before Griffiths Racing? I worked in the travel industry for 10 years. Should organise a GRS Racing Tour to Europe really shouldn’t I...Best part of the job? Seeing horses and owners from the stable get a win when they really deserve it, like Soaked winning earlier this year. The fact I can take my dog to work if I want is right up there though.Worst part of the job? It’s all pretty good though sometimes it can feel like you are a servant for the cats around the office (we did create the problem ourselves so no real grounds for complaint).

How long have you worked for Griffiths Racing? 4 YearsFavourite Horse of all time? Sebring Favourite Horse at Griffiths Racing? Chile Express and Kentucky Gem, I loved Chile from the moment he came over from New Zealand and recently my own horse Kentucky Gem has joined the stable so I must put her in as well. I worked in Hospitality and worked at the Australian Racing Museum (when it was located at Federation Square)Best part of the job? The horses, it is nice to be able to look out the window and see them. You get to know the horses, they end up becoming part of the family. Worst part of the job? Racing has so many ups and downs and the downs are certainly the worst part.

Australasian breeders are in a position that mare owners from around the world are envious of; they have access to Bel Esprit. The sire of the world’s highest rated racehorse and highest ever rated sprinter, Black Caviar.

Off the back of Black Caviar’s once in a lifetime achievements, Bel Esprit has ascended into the top ten of the General Sires List for Earnings. However, it is the combined efforts of his progeny that have seen Bel Esprit join the elite club of stallions string over 100 ind iv idua l w inners in the rac ing year. Th is accomplishment places him firmly in the top ten on the General Sires List for Winners also.

Bel Esprit was one of the best 2YO’s of his generation, winning five of six starts including the Group 1 Blue Diamond. As a 3YO, he won the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 against the older horses, cementing himself as one of the best sprinters of his time. He finished his racing career with eight wins and over $2 million in prize money.

Bel Esprit is by the champion stallion, Royal Academy, the sire of an incredible 159 stakes winners. His progeny have earned in excess of $145 million in prize money. From the limited number of sons to go to stud, four are proven Group 1 sires.

The 2012/13 season saw Bel Esprit continue to rise, when many thought this is not possible after the sad retirement wonder-mare, Black Caviar. This year however, Bel Esprit unearthed yet another Group 1 Sprinter of serious talent. Bel Sprinter blew everyone away with a last to first victory in the Group 1 Galaxy and was narrowly denied in the ultra competitive Group 1 Krisflyer International Sprint in Singapore. Last season also saw Bel Esprit equal the remarkable Australian record of 155 individual winners for a season, and being as modest as he is, he wouldn’t like to admit he’s achieved this record with a higher strike-rate than any other in the past ten years.

SPECIALMENTION

SOAKED2009 Elvstroem - Saturated

Soaked is a 5 year old chestnut gelding by Elvstroem out of Saturated. He was bred by Bridsan Bloodstock who also race him along with Elvis Cash Syndicate, Balcony Boys Syndicate, Neil Leyden, David Ward, Ms Jenny Kelly, Ms Karen Alberts, Mrs Karyn Morphett & Paul Miall. A September 2008 foal, he debuted on a race track on the 2nd June 2011 at the ‘nursery of champions’ at Bendigo, before going out for a spell. When he returned for his second preparation he immediately started his consistent form line that has stuck with him throughout his career. He placed twice before breaking his maiden status on only his fourth start at Warrnambool with Ryan Maloney on board. Soaked has a get back and run home style which means he can often find himself in a so near yet so

far situation. Following his first win in December 2011 he never ran a bad race but racked up 12 minor placings, not to mention a few other close up finishes, before registering his second victory at his 26th start. It was fantastic for all concerned when he managed to get home at Seymour over 1600m with Steven Arnold riding him to victory earlier this year. Whilst no doubt there were times when connections wondered if another victory would ever happen no-one ever doubted he was giving his all every time he went around. We’re sure the run of outs was frustrating Soaked as much as everyone else! It is often these type of wins that come along without the headlines and fan-fare that can provide the most satisfaction and enjoyment for owners, trainers and staff.

Matthew Allen recorded his first Stakes victory in over five year taking out the $120,000 Adapt Australia Abell Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley aboard the Robbie Griffiths-trained It Is Written.

The win was Allen’s first at Black-type level since he partnered Cardinal Virtue to win the Listed Redelva Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville in February 2009.

Allen, who has had a long association with Griffiths, said it was particularly sweet to combine with the Cranbourne-based trainer on a horse in which he has ridden in much of it's track work.#

“I’ve been working hard and Robbie Griffiths has given me plenty of opportunities so it’s good to have some success for someone who I do a lot of work and especially on this horse because I’ve done a lot of riding on him,” Allen said.

“He’s just so consistent, especially at Moonee Valley and I don’t remember the horse running a bad race.

“We had a beautiful run in transit following the right horses and when I got him out he proved too good.”

Settling with only one behind him in running, Allen elected to stick the rail around the home turn saving

plenty of ground before switching off the heels of the leaders at the top of the straight.

Responding to Allen’s urgings over the final 100m, It Is Written ($12) recorded a last-stride victory over Le Bonsir ($8), with Solsay ($6) a further neck away in third.

Griffiths said Allen was an underrated jockey which was evidenced by his performance tonight.

“That was some sort of ride, it was 12 out of 10,” Griffiths said.

“He’s very underrated, he proved that tonight and has on many occasions. At Stakes level guys like Matthew really get recognised and tonight that was the case.

“We’ve been lucky over the years we’ve had a few horses that have liked this track so it's been a bit like money valley for us.”

Stakes Success for Written Tycoon

Former Eliza Park based sire Written Tycoon is now back in Victoria with Woodside Park after a stint in Queensland, his merit highlighted at Moonee Valley last night when his smart sprinter It Is Written, took out the Listed MVRC Adapt Australia Abell Stakes.

Prepared by Robbie Griffiths, who purchased him from the Riva Ridge draft at the Adelaide Magic Millions for just $45,000, It Is Written claimed his second Black Type success with a tenacious short head win in the 1200 metre sprint.

"He’s been a terrific horse and he loves this place, perhaps we should be calling it Money Valley as far as he’s concerned,” winning trainer Robbie Griffiths said.

"He’s been up a while and been racing well without a lot of luck, his last start was a mad leader bias at Mornington, but he’s been racing well in Group and Listed races so he’s not winning out of turn.”

He has the overall record of eight wins and nine

placings from 32 starts with earnings of $469,913 and is the best of three winners from Danehill Dancer (IRE) mare Winning Team, a grand-daughter of Rebecca Gay, winner of the Group II VRC Edward Manifold Stakes.

It Is Written was bred by Riva Ridge Stud, who sold his yearling full sister at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in Adelaide earlier this week for $65,000.

It Is Written is one of four stakes-winners for Written Tycoon joining Howmuchdoyouloveme, Trump and Grand Tycoon.

DANZERO - BROADWAY ELLIE

I’ve had a lot of success with the Danzero progeny and this colt caught my eye with his well developed body, great athleticism and

fantastic walk.

He’s the second foal of a Street Cry mare whose first foal is racing very well in America.

The Danehill/Street Cry cross has proven extremely successful. It’s a mating that has

produced “Shocking”, and many others.

MYBOYCHARLIE- VITAL MIST

This son of Myboycharlie is an early foal that is well grown and looks an ideal type to take

advantage of all the riches of 2YO racing. He’s bred on the same cross as recent 2YO Inglis Classic winner “Peggy Jean” and he’s

eligible to run in that event next year. Myboycharlie is a very good young sire,

himself a champion 2YO, and this colt looks like he will follow in his dad’s footsteps.

I expect him to run early.

Griffiths Racing Stables are proud to acknowledge and recognise the importance of the Racing Victoria Off the Track series. We have had several of our own retired horses compete successfully in the series and it gives not only ourselves but past owners the opportunity to continue to cheer on these beautiful animals in their new Equestrian disciplines from the sidelines.

Feedback suggests that the Off the Track feature in our magazine has proved to be one of the most popular sections. Most owners love the fact that their retired horses have a great future away from the race track.

There are literally thousands of thoroughbreds in Victoria succeeding in their post racing lives as pleasure or equestrian horses. Off the track horses are highly sought after due to their versatility and striking presence. They are also renowned for handling large crowds with most having a coping mechanism that enables to perform in high pressure situations, an attribute highly sought after, particularly in the world of showing. Racehorses are handled well from a young age and are well accustomed to being ridden, floated and trucked. Educating and retraining a retired race horse is an affordable and rewarding option for pleasure, pony club, showing, eventing, dressage and Adult riding. Many racehorse owners are happy to sell or retire horses for a minimal fee allowing a trained person to invest a little more money in their re education. We at Griffiths Racing highly recommend this as it generally means horses have a lovely future beyond racing.

There is a list of retired racehorse retrainers on the Racing Victoria web page www.racingvictoria.net.au which details contact numbers.

The Off the Track Program aims to increase the demand for retired thoroughbred racehorses as pleasure and performance horses by sponsoring events and clinics, sharing success stories and promoting the attributes of the thoroughbred. Racing Victoria is committed to the welfare of the Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. Racing Victoria Off the Track series currently sponsors Interschool Victoria, Riding for the Disabled State Titles, Australian Showjumping Championships, Thoroughbred Riding Club Extravaganza (HRCAV), Royal Melbourne show Horses in Action, Saddleworld Dressage Festival, Royal Melbourne

Horse Show, Victorian Agricultural Society (VASA) off the track show series, Melbourne Three day Event and other Victorian Horse Events.

Last year saw a record number of retired racehorses line up at the Royal Melbourne Show, where thoroughbreds were celebrated as the feature breed. In fact there was a 45% increase on thoroughbred participation from 2013 with popular racehorses including Group 1 winner Sirmione, Emirates Melbourne Cup runner up Bauer and Austra l ian Steeplechaser Tarawera compet ing. Equestrian Victoria host an event exclusively open to off the track horses. Griffiths Racing stables are proud that this year we are hopeful of seeing several of our ex racehorses entered for this event. Thoroughbred racehorses which were retired from racing within 2 years of the event are eligible to compete in the Special Off The Track class.

In the past our stable were proud to witness Crown (ex Love a Laga) place runner up in the famous Royal Melbourne Show Garryowen Event. We are looking foward to watching Fordee, San Sebastion and No Treaty go on and compete in these top class events.

Retired Racehorses are also playing another important role helping young riders forge careers in the racing industry. These young riders participate in Racing Victoria’s Track Riding Program exclusively partnering off the track thoroughbreds. These young riders complete slow and pace work on retired racehorses whilst becoming accustomed to the daily routine of a racing stable. They learn to care for racehorse pre and post work and undertake general stable duties whilst also learning other important skills including bandaging, diet etc. This program offers a fantastic pathway into a career in the racing industry for prospective employees. Pony Club Association Victoria has also encouraging members to participate in the Track Riding at Rallies program. Riders are shown how to ride using the different track riding techniques, eg bridged reins, shorter stirrups and body position.

Follow off the Track on Facebook OffThe TrackRV and Twitter @ RV_OffTheTrack for the latest news on the retired racehorse in Victoria. You can share your success stories and images with fellow riders.!!

AFTER THE TRACK

Danzylum was certainly a favourite around the stables and tracks, his strapper Graeme loved and cared for him and his owners certainly did the same. Danzylum had a long racing career and this big son of Danzero contested and won some fantastic races including The Chester Manifold Stakes two years in a row and also the Barton Stakes. Danzylum or Howard/Howie as he was called loved being in work and everything that went along with it. He also had a knack of putting on a lot of weight so he could never be out of work too long but he liked it that way. When it came to retiring him Janet Gaist, a part owner, gladly put her hand up to have him at her property in Rochester. When he first arrived at the farm he was a bit anxious so Graham went and grabbed Janet’s 34 year old mare Grace to partner up with him next door, and he then fell in love with her. He still misses the races and sometimes on race days Janet takes her iphone over to him to put the live races on so he can hear the race call and he pricks his ears.# He is always up for a pat and comes over for a brush. He pretends at first he doesn’t want one, then he nudges you to get on with it – very cute.# He is in a

paddock up the front of the farm around the house and stables as he enjoys knowing everything that goes on.When they have a new horse at the farm he makes sure he is aware what is going on and if they move any horses around they have to make sure if they are his friends they are still in his sight or the whole farm goes into upheaval for the King!!!!During the summer heatwaves, Peter would go and hose him and he would come over and just stand there and enjoy his cool shower. He will be commencing his Nanny duties in the next couple of weeks and hopefully the young ones can learn something off him – what a brilliant race horse he was.

“He has a home forever and on behalf of myself and all the other owners I must thank the Griffiths Team for looking after this lovely fell who raced as a 2 year old right thru to a 9 year old and we think retried as a Champion." He was a pleasure to own and race.” – Janet Gaist

STARSPANGLEDBANNER- HAWAIIAN MELODY

This beautiful daughter of Starspangledbanner is a rare gem as her dad has low fertility and there won’t be many of

his progeny available. He was a star that succeeded at the highest level here and in

Europe. I trained her mum, she was very fast and this

is a great filly’s family that has produced recent Group 1 winning filly “Costa Viva”.

She has great residual value.

What are the average weekly costs for having a 5% interest in a racehorse@ Griffiths Racing Stables? The average cost of having a racehorse with Griffiths Racing stables totals approximately $45 per week per 5% interest. You would be required to pay the initial purchase price for the 5% interest followed by the ongoing weekly expense of $45.00.

What does the $45 weekly cost NOT include? In addition to the $45 weekly cost, charges such as interstate travel expenses and nominations to major Group races such as Blue Diamond, Oaks etc entries would be needed to be added to the weekly cost.

How long does it take from yearling purchase to Racing? This can vary with each individual yearling. Some yearlings are more precocious than others and look to be early runners where others may require more time to mature and develop. Yearlings are given a short rest immediately after yearling sales before being commencing their initial education process, which generally takes 6-8 weeks. Depending on how they cope with this process determines whether they enter our training facility to complete a few weeks further education and familiarise themselves with the daily routine of travelling to and from the training complex, walking machine and other associated tasks. They are then spelled for several weeks before entering Pre Training to begin their first racing preparation.

How many weeks can you expect a horse to race for?Older horses generally race for 8 months of the year. Some consideration has to be given to certain horses preferring particular race track conditions with some horses not showing a liking for rain affected tracks whilst others love these conditions.

It is not uncommon for younger horses to go through some physical changes whilst developing such as shin soreness and muscle fatigue. These changes are very normal and are usually just an indication that they are going through growth phases not unlike a young child.

How many owners are permitted per horse?Racing Victoria allows a maximum of 20 owners or less per horse. This can be made up from individual owners or syndicates. Syndicates allow a maximum of 20 participants and need to registered through Racing Victoria.

What is the fee to register a syndicate and how many owners tickets are you entitled to on Raceday per syndicate? To register a syndicate is $275. Tickets on raceday are generally at the discretion of the club or club official. City meetings can also vary to Provincial meetings. Sometimes they are more stringent on Feature race days such as Melbourne Cup carnival etc.

Do you Insure your racehorse? We insure all our yearlings for the first 12 months from fall of hammer. This is included in the purchase price. After 12 months the relevant Insurance company will contact individual owners independently to ascertain whether they wish to continue to insure their own individual share. This is a personal choice. Racehorse Insurance is a death only policy so subsequently many owners prefer not to insure after 12 months.

What can an owner @ Griffiths Racing expect from the stable regarding communication?

•" Owners @ Griffiths Racing receive regular updates on their horse whilst in training. Pre and Post race reports detailing venue, barrier, race number, jockey and Robbies thoughts on form

•" Facebook and Twitter updates and information

•" Instagram•" Quarterly Magazine featuring Staff/Horse

and owner profiles, After the track feature, General stable/Racing news

•" Yearling magazine featuring all yearling purchased by the stable

If you wish to relinquish your interest in a horse what process is involved?Your interest is offered to the remaining owners. In some instances other owners will each adjust their own share marginally in order to pick up the extra interest. If other owners do not wish to take up the interest it would then be offered to other Griffiths Racing clients.

Will owners get tips and Information? No the stable will not offer tips in the interest of other horses trained in the stable. You will receive information regarding your horse but not other stable runners.

Can I pick and race in my own racing colours?Yes owners can pick their own colours. Colours can be registered with Racing Victoria. Racing in your own colours will be determined by whether or not other owners with a larger interest have their own colours. It is usually at the discretion of other owners in the group to decide. Griffiths Racing has their own racing colours in the likelihood that owners do not have colours.

How is horse prizemoney distributed?Owners receive their prizemoney individually from Racing Victoria and received to your individual nominated bank accounts with a summary.

Can I buy an interest as a gift?Yes, this can be arranged by contacting our office.

What methods of payment can I use?EFT, Cheque or Credit Card. When paying with Credit Card, please be aware that Diners and Amex incur fees with training account payments. All payments for share purchases incur a merchant fee (including Visa and Mastercard).

Do I get to pick my own Jockey?Robbie prefers to allocate jockeys for each of his horses racing depending on each horses individual requirements. He is happy to discuss jockeys with owners however final decision will be based on Robbies training requirements for each horse and what he believes will be necessary for each horse in order to be competitive.

Can I contact other owners in my horse?Due to privacy reasons we are unable to disclose other owners details without their consent however most ownership groups develop friendships and are happy to pass on their own details to co owners.

How do I get involved? It’s very easy to get involved, simply call (03) 5995 2444 or visit the website www.griffithsracing.com.au.

Do you think you can put together a group of like-minded people to come racing?

If so contact Griffiths Racing and reap the rewards!
