BACKACTER 900


Introduction

Yard “De Donge” designed and build a new type of excavator; the BA series. The only dedicated marine

dipperdredger excavators in the world. Designed for the dredging job only.

Why did we do this:

The classic approach of an(land) excavator on a dipperdredger had too many compromises.

Higher lifting and penetration forces when demanded.

Functional desire to put the engines in the hull, water cooling , no fuel stops, reduced oil spills,

etc.

Free choice of dimensions and components.

Stronger dredging equipment.

Improved design with regard to maritime environment.

Reduced fire risk, etc.

General features:

A top class marine dredger with all drive-unit powerpacks in spaces under deck.

Big buckets at a deep dredging depth with highest penetration forces.

No fuel stops required.

High and extending dumping reach.

Low turbidity dredging machine.

Shock-absorbing elastic foundation, integrated in the dredger’s deck.

Al spud and spud carrier operations from the Backacter’s cabin.

One hydraulic powerpack system for the Backacter, self-manoeuvrability and for the spud system.

For a BA 900 a Cummins QSK60 of 1900 kW and a Cummins QSM11 of 317 kW.

Water cooled diesels and water cooled hydraulic system.

For working in ambient temperatures till – 25 0C.

General Technical Characteristics BA 900

1 x 1900 kW (1x Cummins QSK60-DM), plus 1 x 310 kW (Cummins QSM11-DM) installed.

Max oil flow per minute : 7200 L/min.

Max. pressure : 320 bars.

Fuel consumption (approx. at 100% load) : 540 L/hr. approx.

Upper carriage is heat stress relieved.

Estimated weight of “Backacter” on deck : 360 tons.

Hydraulic boom cylinder dimensions : 460 mm / 300 mm. .

Stick cylinder dimensions : 340 mm / 240 mm.

Bucket cylinder dimensions : 280 mm / 180 mm. (short + long stick)

Forged connection eyes at rods will be applied (mono and stick cylinders).

All cylinders have hydraulic “damping”.

Large operation cabin.

Automatic greasing on slewing ring and on the dredging equipment, except bucket connections. In

total 3 automatic greasing systems are present.

Monobloc and stick can be switched in H-bypass (floating position).

Diameter slewing ring : 4400 mm (triple roller type).

Height of slewing teeth : 500 mm.

Slewing gears : 4 pieces, equally divided.

Like all Backacter’s, the main hydraulic tank is non-pressurized, thus enhancing H-pump and

eliminating air bubbles. Water cooled hydraulic system. The hydraulic system is water cooled !

Hydraulic installation BA900

A view in the engine room; the powerpack of the Backacter is positioned below deck; thus the

machinery is e.g. easily accessible. Most maintenance / checks are possible during operation, being

positioned in a non-corrosive environment, offering; increased life-times, less sound emissions, less

chance on environmental spills, no stops for refilling fuel of excavator, less fire risk (engine is

positioned in a closed environment). The engine is water cooled instead of air, the hydraulic pumps are

oil-filled by means of gravity, etc.
