MP3 modeYou can also use this car sound sys-tem to play CD-Rs and CD-RWs thatcontain MP3 music files.

MP3 is a process developed by theFraunhofer Institute for compressing CDaudio data. Compression allows data tobe reduced to around 10% of their orig-inal size without a noticeable loss inquality (at a bit rate of 128 kbit/s). If alower bit rate is used to convert CD au-dio data to MP3, you will be able to cre-ate smaller files but this will be accom-panied by a loss in audio quality.

Preparing an MP3-CDThe various combinations of CD burn-ers, CD burning software and CD blanksmay lead to problems arising with thedevice’s ability to play certain CDs. Ifproblems occur with your own burnedCDs, you should try another brand ofCD blank or choose another colour ofCD blank. To avoid problems when play-ing CDs, you should not burn CDs atspeeds greater than 16-speed.

The format of the CD must be ISO 9660Level 1 / Level 2 or Joliet. Other formatscannot be played reliably.

You can create a maximum of 253 di-rectories on a CD. You can use this de-vice to access each of these directo-ries.

Regardless of the number of directorieson the CD, the device can handle up to65,535 MP3 files on a single CD - evenif they are all stored in one directory.

This device supports as many subdirec-tories as your burner software can cre-ate despite the fact that the maximumdirectory depth defined by the ISO 9660standard is only 8.

Blaupunkt therefore recommends usingMMC/SD cards made by “SanDisk” and“Panasonic” with a maximum storagecapacity of 512 MBytes, since optimumfunctionality has been achieved withthese cards.

If cards are formatted using a PC, thereis no guarantee that files will definitelybe able to be saved onto the cards andthen read from them.

The only supported file system is FAT16.If you attempt to record onto an MMC/SD that is formatted differently, you willsee “UNFORMATTED” appear in thedisplay.

Before using MMCs/SDs in the Wood-stock DAB54, you should definitely for-mat them in the Woodstock DAB54. Forfurther details, please read the sectionentitled “Formatting MMCs/SDs” in the“MMC/SD mode” chapter of the operat-ing instructions.

Before starting to record, you shouldmake sure there is sufficient space onthe inserted MMC/SD and that there areno more than 254 directories presenton the MMC/SD.

You must not remove an MMC/SD fromthe device whilst recording is inprogress. Always make sure you firstswitch off the Woodstock DAB54 beforeremoving an MMC/SD card.

the first 15 seconds after switchingto DAB mode or after switching onthe radio with DAB mode activated. This also applies even if youpressed the REC•DEL button ?and “RECORDING” appears in thedisplay.

To avoid damaging the MMC/SD,you should never start the enginewhilst recording. Starting the en-gine might cause the voltage of thevehicle’s electrical system to drop, which could permanently damagethe MMC/SD.

The automatic DAB-FM switchingfeature is deactivated whilst record-ing is taking place. The DAB pro-gramme remains tuned during re-cording, even if the reception quali-ty deteriorates.

Recording starts and “RECORDING”appears in the display for 2 seconds.

If there is insufficient space available onthe card, “CARD FULL” appears in thedisplay for 2 seconds. In this case, de-lete some tracks from the MMC/SD (see“Deleting recordings” below) or insertanother MMC/SD.

The file created during recording is giv-en a name as follows:ddhhmmss.mp3. “dd” stands for theday the recording was made, “hh”

stands for the hour recording was start-ed, “mm” stands for minutes and “ss”for seconds.

The device creates the “DAB_DIR” di-rectory on the MMC/SD to store the re-corded files.

Telephone/navigation duringrecordingTelephone calls or voice output from anavigation system do not affect record-ing. The DAB programme continues tobe recorded in the background duringa telephone call or voice output.

Stopping recordingIf you want to stop recording,

INTRODUCTION

1. IntroductionDigital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) isgaining popularity among listeners dueto the superior audio quality. However,DAB is also multimedia enabled with avariety of data being transmitted by theservice provider to the receiver. ThePocketDAB 2004 software combinedwith the Woodstock DAB54 allows theuser to access these data services. Thissoftware was developed in the Re-search and Development department ofBosch in Hildesheim.

As of today, four data services havebeen specified and standardised forDAB - the Dynamic Label Service(DLS), the Slideshow Service (SLS), theBroadcast Website (BWS) applicationand the Traffic Message Service (TMC).More data services are under develop-ment and they promise to further en-rich DAB in the future. The PocketDABsoftware currently supports the DLS,SLS and BWS services. Additional thestill experimental TopNews service issupported.

This manual gives an overview of thePocketDAB software from installation tousage. The installation is covered in sec-tion 4. This section covers the instruc-tions for the Bluetooth setup of the PDAas well. The installation of the Wood-stock, PDA and Bluetooth hardware isnot part of this manual. The usage of thePocketDAB software is explained in sec-tion 5 and section 6. Finally all knownissues are summarised in section 7.

It is highly recommended that beforeinstallation and usage of the software, the user read section 3 carefully.

KNOWN ISSUES

7. Known IssuesBluetooth:• If the connection between the PDA

and the Bluetooth adapter is dis-connected you have to close andrestart the PocketDAB applicationto connect again.

• If the PocketDAB tries to establisha BT connection while the PDA BTis not switched on, the system willhang and a soft reset must be per-formed.

• If you switch off the PDA while theBT connection is established andthe PocketDAB software communi-cates with the radio, the PDA can-not be switched on again. Youhave to perform a soft reset. An up-date of the HP2210 ROM versionto 1.10 solves this problem.

• If the wrong COM port for the BTcommunication is selected the sys-tem will freeze. Please perform asoft reset and switch of BT („Blue-tooth OFF” on the PocketPC startsrceen). Then start the PocketDABapplication and switch to the cor-rect COM port. Now switch BT onagain.

BWS:• The PocketDAB application de-

codes only the profile related entrypoint in the root from the BWS Di-rectoryIndex parameter. Every oth-er DirectoryIndex parameter entryis ignored.

• According to the DAB specification, the BWS UserApplicationType datafield in FIG 0/13 should carry theMinimumProfileId. The applicationdecodes the service even if this isnot present using the selected pro-file id set by the user in the optionsmenu.

• Only BWS services with the MOTDirectory mode are decoded by theapplication. The application showsthe BWS icon to be active accord-ing to FIG 0/13 in case of the MOTHeader mode as well but the serv-ice is not decoded. This is a caseof wrong signalling from the serviceprovider side.

• According to the profile setting incustomize -> options -> MOT /BWS profile the data services aredecoded and displayed. If a dataservice has a different profile thenselected the BWS icon in the mainscreen will be displayed but theservice will not be accessible. Please change the profile settingaccordingly.

• For PC based BWS decoder a webserver is mandatory. This is not im-plemented. The browsing is on filebasis.

• The decoding speed is strongly de-pendent from the data channel sizeand the overall amount of data. Tomuch data in a to small channelleads to a slow decoding speed.

• The file size percentage may beabove 100% if objects are com-pressed during transportation.
