RESEARCH

My research interests focus on sustainable tourism with special attention to how the unique natural and cultural

resources of communities can be protected, packaged and marketed to jointly increase sustainability, resident quality

of life and a community’s competitiveness as a tourism destination.

University of Georgia, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources

NRRT 1100e: Introduction to Travel and Tourism (5 sections; 87-150 students).

This course is a survey of travel and tourism in a global context. Students become acquainted with the economic,

socio-cultural, demographic, and environmental impacts that tourism has on the world community. Special

emphasis is placed on issues faced by tourism developers in businesses and governments of all sizes.

NRRT 5900/7900: Ecotourism and Sustainable Development (4 sections; 10-25 students)

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the topic of tourism and to provide a broad

discussion of what constitutes sustainable tourism from non-sustainable tourism. The discussion of sustainable

tourism is centered on tourism’s positive and negative impacts across the triple bottom line (environmental, socio-

cultural, and economic sustainability). Specific strategies to minimize these negative impacts and to facilitate their

positive impact is the primary objective of the class.

NRRT 4400: Resource Management and Entrepreneurship (4 sections; 10-20 students)

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts, principles and approaches to operating

commercial recreation and tourism business in both public and private natural resource settings. After completion of

this course, students will have gained the knowledge and entrepreneurial skills needed to analyze market conditions,

find gaps in recreation and tourism offerings, and capitalize on these gaps by creating business plans aimed towards

attracting investors

FANR 4500: Senior Project (1 section; 6 students)

Senior project is the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resource’s capstone class. It involves students

identifying natural resource management problems and working with clients to development objective and

management alternatives to solve the problem.

FANR/MARS 1100: Natural Resource Conservation (1 section; 60 students)

This course introduces students to general principles and contemporary issues related to how we use and protect a

variety of natural resources on the planet. Topics include ecology and management of wildlife, fish, forests, and

rangelands; natural resources recreation and tourism; conservation of water, wetlands, and soil resources; and

renewable and non-renewable energy (Co-instructed with Dr. Susan Wilde).

NRRT 8980: Research/Theories of Human Dimensions, Recreation & Tourism (2 sections; ~10 students)

This seminar-style course is designed to provide graduate students with an opportunity to learn about specific

research and theories related to the human dimensions of natural resources, outdoor recreation participation and

trends, and sustainable tourism. This course also reviews and critiques the various research approaches and designs

used within these fields of study.

FYOS 1001: Travel and Tourism around the World (3 sections; ~15 students)

This First Year Odyssey will provide students with an introduction to travel and tourism and the many complexities

of managing such a global industry. Specific attention will be given to tourism’s potential to bring large-scale

positive and negative economic, environmental, and socio-cultural impacts to communities where it takes place.

After introducing some introductory material, the class’ focus will switch to covering travel issues across each of the

7 continents and here at home in Athens, GA.

Virginia Tech, Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management

HTM 2454: Introduction to Travel and Tourism Management (5 sections- ~200 students)

This course is a comprehensive overview of tourism concepts and philosophies from an international perspective.

The course is taught in a distance learning-online format and is an area 7 general studies course; teacher of record.
