AYURVEDA CERTIFICATE PROGRAM SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (SPS) Ayurveda is a holistic system of health care and preventative medicine that developed in India more than 5,000 years ago. The term “Ayurveda” combines two Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Thus, Ayurveda is quite literally “the science of life.” The aim of Ayurvedic medicine is to integrate and balance the whole person: the body, mind and spirit in order to promote wellness and prevent illness. Ayurveda fosters an understanding of an individual’s unique mind-body constitution or dosha. According to Ayurveda, there are five master elements that make up our world and ourselves: space, air, fire, water, and earth. Each element carries inherent qualities, such as fire – hot and transformational or earth – solid and stable. Ayurveda groups these elements into three basic energies or doshas: Vata (Air and Space), Pitta (Fire and Water), and Kapha (Earth and Water). As most individuals are a combination of these doshas, Ayurvedic treatments work to restore balance to our bodies and minds and return us to our true constitutions for optimal health, balance, and happiness. Ayurvedic science aims at the prevention and management of disease by establishing balance through nutrition, herbal medicines, pranayama or breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, and daily and seasonal routine. ABHYANGAA relaxing full-body massage using smooth, gentle strokes with the whole palm and warm medicated herbal oil specially formulated for one’s dosha. This therapy helps to nourish and revitalize the body and to allow toxins to be removed from the cells. It helps to improve blood circulation, eliminates fatigue, pacifies Vata imbalance, beautifies the skin, reduces stress and induces sound sleep for peak daily performance.

SHIRODHARAA relaxing health-and-beauty technique in which a continuous stream of dosha specific medicated warm oil is poured over the forehead to promote physical and emotional balance and rejuvenate the spirit. As the oil gently nourishes the skin, it opens blocked energy channels and relaxes the body and mind to relieve tension and achieve inner peace. This therapy revitalizes the central nervous system, enhances circulation and promotes detoxification for a healthy glow. Considered an effective treatment for insomnia, depression, anxiety, stress and other nervous system disorders.

SHIROABHYANGAA soothing massage of the neck, head, and shoulders that stimulates chemical endorphins in the body for a relaxed, peaceful feeling of contentment. This therapy helps to relax muscles, ease stiffness, and drain away toxins. Deeper breathing and increased oxygenated blood circulation to the brain results in greater concentration and focused thought. Considered beneficial to relieve headaches and eye strain, reduce stress levels, promote more restful and healthful sleep, improve memory, reduce pain, lower blood pressure, and reverse scalp problems and hair loss. Experience this comforting therapy that increases energy and vitality levels while promoting a youthful appearance of healthier skin and hair.

KATI BASTIA therapeutic body work in which the healing properties of warm herbalized oil bathes the lumbar region to provide relief to painful conditions of the lower back. Considered for chronic and acute backaches, prolapsed disc, lumbar spondylosis, rheumatic arthritis, sciatica, osteoporosis, and lumbosacral strain.

JANU BASTIA therapeutic body work in which warm medicinal oil bathes the knee joint. This healing therapy lubricates the joints, cleans and fortifies the blood, and builds strong muscle and connective tissue. Considered for treating osteoarthritis of the knee, inflammation of the knee joint, and knee stiffness and pain. By promoting strength to the knee joint, this therapy works to counteract the mobility limiting changes to the knee that are often associated with advancing age.

GREEVA BASTIA rejuvenating, therapeutic body work in which warm medicated oil bathes the back of the neck to strengthen bone and joint tissue and promote a healthy spine. Considered for chronic neck pain and stiffness, cervical spondylosis, and compression fractures.
