Ashoka Arab World (AAW) is the regional branch of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public. Launched in 2003, AAW has identified and elected leading social entrepreneurs in 7 Arab countries (Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, KSA, Morocco and Kuwait) to become Ashoka Fellows. Through their innovations, these fellows have introduced positive social impact and change to their environment across various sectors.

About AWSIFThe Arab World Social Innovation Forum (AWSIF) is a regional physical platform for the enhancement of social innovation in the Arab world.

Ashoka’s goal in organizing AWSIF 2014 is to promote Arab social innovators to the global scene, and to shift the culture and mindset of how we contribute to our societies, focusing on the long-term economic and social returns that accompany strategic investment in social innovation.

AWSIF 2014 will be held in Dubai and will bring together global and regional experts, leading business entrepreneurs and social innovators.to further foster innovative thinking in addressing key challenges facing the Arab world.

AWSIF 2014 comprises of two components –

A physical Forum held in Dubai in Spring 2014

and the AWSIF program which will support local social innovators in scaling their operations.

AWSIF 2014 will:

Introduce Arab business leaders to the world of social entrepreneurship by facilitating connections with selected Ashoka Fellows and a global community of leading social and business entrepreneurs.

Import global social innovations that are of strategic relevance to the Middle East

Support the growth of local innovations addressing key regional challenges that have the potential to be scaled up through the AWSIF Scaling Program.

Create an ecosystem for social entrepreneurship in the Gulf by establishing a community of the region’s business entrepreneurs as supporters, linking them to Ashoka’s global network.

The Forum leverages Ashoka’s longstanding support of leading social entrepreneurs to connect attendees to the latest high-impact social initiatives and partnerships, serving as a platform for social innovation and change in the Arab World.

AWSIF 2014 will achieve its objectives through the following initiatives: Experts thematic roundtables;

Induction of a new cohort of region’s leading social entrepreneurs into Ashoka Fellow-ship;

Presentations of region’s latest, most promising social initiatives and programs;

Recognition of leading supporters of Arab social entrepreneurship and development;

Networking opportunities;

AWSIF program for supporting social innovators.

AWSIF 2014 Agenda

The AWSIF 2014 Gala Dinner serves as a platform to connect Arab local social innova-tions with their global counter parts to promote our home-grown models for change at a global stage, as well as to bring relevant global solutions to the region.

Induction of new cohort of region’s leading social entrepreneurs into Ashoka Fellowship.Presentation and recognition of some of the most innovative and successful social programs, initiatives and social-business ventures in the Arab region.Recognition of supporters of Arab social entrepreneurship.Presentation and progress update on our AWSIF program.Discussion Panel on the state and future of regional infrastructure for social entre-preneurship.

Roundtable DiscussionsThe discussions will gather key individuals and organizations working on addressing AWSIF focus challenges. The roundtables will be carefully prepared and supported by a moderator and quality research and materials, available for the participants in advance. At the end of each discussion there will be an opportunity for participants to share pledges. The discussion will be carefully documented and roundtables’ outputs will be published after the event.

Selection panel for AWSIF ProgramThe selection panel made up of experts of AWSIF’s focus areas will choose the business plans of the most promising local social innovators from the AWSIF program-ready to scale up to the global level. The final winners of each focus area will receive a monetary incentive to materialize their social innovation.

Closing CeremonyThe closing ceremony will highlight: Presentation of winners and awards of the AWSIF Program. Presentation of pledges and reports from the roundtable discussions.

AWSIF PROGRAM

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The AWSIF Program is is a proven methodology to scale social innovation, which aims to establish social entrepreneurship in the Gulf, by introducing proven local solutions to the global scene, and bringing global successful innovations to the local arena.

The Ashoka Scaling Program in the Arab world will:Focus on major challenges in the Gulf such as:

Identify best in class individuals who work in the region (with special focus on Gulf) on innova-tive, entrepreneurial ideas to address these challenges.

Assess and evaluate the identified ideas and their impact to explore their operational models, potential to scale up, problems and bottlenecks for expanding.

Select 5-7 local social innovators from the UAE for each of the identified challenges based on the innovation of the approach, its potential to scale and its proven track of success.

Identify best practices among 3000 Ashoka Fellows, co-creators, business entrepreneurs, who fit the fields of work of the selected ideas.

With the help of the selected Ashoka Fellows, the innovators chosen for the AWSIF program will develop business plans and roadmaps for scaling up the selected ideas.

Engage local Partners in the Gulf interested in contributing to scaling up the solutions for the identified problems.

At the AWSIF Forum:

The AWSIF Forum will serve as a platform for the showcasing and presentation of the devel-oped business plans of the AWSIF Program. Local, regional and global experts will consult and support the finalization of the business plans. The AWSIF Forum will launch the competition of the created business plans. With the engagement of the key business community in the Middle East, an expert panel of judges will select the winners. The selected winners will receive substantial media coverage as well as a monetary award to materialize the scaling of their ideas.
