    AFTERWORD BY BOOKLET CREATOR GERHARD SATKE

    Andy Partridge has not been involved in creating this booklet and did not authorise/approve it. I made the booklet out of enthusiasm for XTC and Andy in order to please other fans.

    It is meant for personal use only; no commercial interest is involved on my part.

    The liner notes are original A.P. statements (largely posted to the Idea Records forum). The song lyrics were taken from the Chalkhills site and partly transcribed/edited.

    Recording information, credits, copyright mentions etc. are based on various reliable sources; the acknowledgements are the only item that I put into Andys mouth.

    I would like to thank John Relph for accommodating a variety of booklet sources,

    Idea Records forum poster Young 02 for requesting liner notes on the Hinges songs, Annie Sattler for transcribing the lyrics of Now We All Dead (It Doesnt Matter),

    Jon Rosenberger for sharing the Japanese F.W. advertisement including Andys artwork, Neville Farmer for digging into all released songs, and Todd Bernhardt for revitalizing XTC.

    Instruments and vocals on all tracks by Andy Partridge with the addition of Dave Gregory - guitar and bass on 6 All songs were recorded at Andys home except 6 at Daves home Mastered by Ian Cooper at Metropolis Mastering, London Hinges and Fuzzy Warbles sleeve art by Andrew Swainson A.P. photo by Carl Fox (courtesy of Tracks magazine) Fuzzy Warbles promotional artwork by Andy Partridge Booklet compiled and designed by Gerhard Satke A.P. photo and original artwork edited by Gerhard Satke

Erica for not having been content with the role of just another satellite. Big thanks to Virgin Records for making this series possible All songs written by Andy Partridge and published by EMI Music Publishing. This compilation and 2006 Ape House Ltd. H.01 Gold

    Written on a turned-down electric guitar after the original completion of the Mummer album which Virgin went on to reject, asking that I write more songs. This was one of the extra tunes,

    along with Great Fire [and ended up as the B side to the Great Fire single]. Its a 4-track cassette demo. I had to hurry to finish this mix as the band was

    meeting up with Miles Copeland for dinner. He wanted to poach us away from our original manager, out of the frying pan eh?

    H.02 Now We All Dead (It Doesnt Matter)

    If my crappy memory serves me cod and chips, this was penned early on for The Big Express. The vocal track of the demo was decayed badly when I came to clean it up,

    so I thought a little cosmetic distortion would smooth over ugly unintentional groo. Also the front of the tape was badly mangled; I had to start from where I could.

    Didnt make it onto the album because I wrote the sentiment better in This World Over.

    H.03 Rain Of Blows {EARLY VERSION}

    Just that, really. Me stirring around in a half formed idea of a song.

    I knew it could be better.

    Have you got Miss Fortune, shes the daughter of rich parents, all she does is cry. One four-letter word is all she wants but you cant buy love so theres no supply. Will you take your Master Charge, the boy whos living well beyond his fathers means. See his mother kill herself with work to keep her dandy in the latest jeans. Happy families is a kids game. Happy families is your main aim. It starts out with a dealing in the middle of the night, and ends up with a full house if you play your cards out right. Mum says Dad is cheating, you could see the grown-ups fight for happy families. Happy families - a game thats sure to please. Have you got your Master Race the bigot son who, like his dad, is full with beer. Not so much a sun, more of a storm to her, to burn the books when Dads not here. Happy families is a kids game. Happy families is your main aim. You start out with your first cub and you think that lifes a song. Youll end up with a wolf pack if you lay your cards out wrong. Dad says Mom is cheating, you can see the children long for happy families. Happy families - a game thats sure to please. Have you got Miss Carriage, shes the girl who wants a baby that she cannot find. Strange, the ones who want to win the race are usually the ones who fall behind. Here comes President Kill again, surrounded by all of his killing men. Telling us who, why, where and when, President Kill wants killing again. Hooray, ring out the bells, King Conscience is dead. Hooray, now back in your cells, weve President Kill instead. Here comes President Kill again, broadcasting from his killing den. Dressed in pounds and dollars and yen, President Kill wants killing again. Hooray, hang out the flags, Queen Caring is dead. Hooray, well stack body bags, for President Kill instead. Aint democracy wonderful, them Russians cant win! Aint democracy wonderful? Lets us vote someone like that in. Here comes President Kill again, from pure White House to Number 10. Taking lives with a smoking pen, President Kill wants killing again. Hooray, everythings great, now President Kill is dead. Hooray, Ill bet you cant wait, to vote for President Kill instead. Do you know what noise awakes you every morning from your bed. A coming from the farthest hillside, a coming from inside your head. You have heard, you have heard the loudest sound in this and every world you can think of - louder than tanks on the highway, louder than bombers in flight, louder than noises of hatred. Dancing us from darkest night is the rhythm of love, powered on by the beating of hearts. And did you know you had this power? Drumming on it always stays. Never try to use it badly, tunes of good are all it plays. You have heard, you have heard the loudest sound in this and every world you will visit - louder than tanks on the highway, louder than bombers in flight, louder than noises of hatred. Dancing us from darkest night is the rhythm of love, powered on by the beating of hearts. For a heart without love is a song with no words and a tune to which no one is listening. So your heart must give love and youll find that you shine like the rain on the leaves youll be glistening. You have heard, you have heard the loudest sound in this and every world you can think of - louder than thoughts of dictators, louder than rattling swords, louder than cracking of rifles, louder than screaming warlords, louder than tanks on the highway, louder than bombers in flight, louder than noises of hatred. Dancing us from darkest night is the rhythm of love, powered on by the beating of hearts.

    H.07 Happy Families

    Another of XTCs Home Life songs, inspired by the kids card game. Do the kids control the parents or do the parents control the kids? This is the Linn version (i.e. version 2;

    there was an earlier demo with more primitive bonk box) I brought in for Mummer. I liked the words and the melody but for some reason it never seemed to click in the sessions.

    We did a studio recording years later for the John Hughes movie Shes Having A Baby but its heard only as an instrumental mix coming out a transistor radio.

    H.08 Here Comes President Kill Again

    When I walk the dog, I get ideas, and the pace I walk determines the tempo of the song. This one about our powerlessness over governments ability to kill is like people chanting a nursery rhyme. Here comes the 8-track cassette demo for Oranges and Lemons; Alesis drum machine and synth

    brass to the fore. Sometimes I wish I had Herb Alpert permanently on call to play any trumpet parts I can think up. God, I love golden trumpets, and want to have evil sex with them.

    H.09 Beating Of Hearts

    Whenever I see that piece of film of the Chinese student standing in front of the line of tanks, I think this expresses the sentiment I meant to convey in this song -

    that the heart is stronger than tanks and bombs and screaming war planes. The demo of what became the Mummer album opener a year later is an early 4-track recording,

    captured in my back bedroom in 82 after recovering from a cold. The tape is very decayed on top of poor recording Im afraid. Found a new guitar tuning and was going to use it:

    Every string is E, ironically similar to the Glitter Band tuning of every string being A, with Pete Phipps coming just around the corner.

    Looks as if youre dropping mirrors by the gross. Looks as if your nine lives have left town. If you paint in grey and drear, Eldorado will appear and run a sword through all the fears that pull you down. And its okay, as the setting sun will colour everything around you gold. And its okay, as the setting sun will colour everything around you gold - gold, gold, gold, gold. Seems as if you need a lighthouse in your dark. Seems as if Im now your native guide. When the fog is drawing in, Chinese dragons made from tin will trample over all the things that pull you down. And its okay, as the setting sun will colour everything around you gold. And its okay, as the setting sun will colour everything around you gold - gold, gold, gold, gold. And all the pebbles in your shoes are precious stones, and all the skeletons in closets merely piles of harmless bones.
