From The DirectorsWelcome to the 6th Holiday Concert of the Conspirare Youth Choirs!

It has always been a blessed gift to be entrusted with the young artists who have

come under our charge. With past singers who are now fully entrenched in

their college lives to our newest members just ending their elementary school

years, both Nina and I feel so grateful to share our passion for music with each

new generation of choristers.

Our wonderful Kantorei singers are bursting with energy and have come such

a long from their first rehearsals of learning to sing together as a new ensemble.

We’ve shared so many musical touch points this semesters—the influence

of dance in Baroque music, using syllabic stress to better imitate speech, or

musical text painting such as a melody that evokes the image of rocking a baby

to sleep. But my most favorite experience with Kantorei this semester is seeing

the exploration of our youngest members in the idea that singing, at its core, is

about transforming emotion into a musical language. Through the expression

on their faces and body language coupled with the beautiful words and

melodic voices, these singers are learning about how powerful (and fun!) it is to

make connections with your audiences—one of the greatest goals of any choir.

We hope you enjoy our musical journey tonight, and we thank you again for

your support of the Conspirare Youth Choirs during this joyous holiday season!

In 1942 Benjamin Britten wrote the beloved A Ceremony of Carols while

crossing the North Atlantic. He had been in America for a very successful

3 years, and was returning to his British homeland during the most brutal

wartime months. Britten was an outspoken pacifist.

He had been commissioned to write a harp concerto and brought along harp

manuals for the long journey. One of the stops along the way was in Halifax, Nova

Scotia. While disembarked, Britten picked up a book of Medieval poems, which he

used as texts for the work which became an 11-movement work for three-part boys

chorus and harp. No harp concerto was composed during the voyage.

Donald Teeter, a Boston music critic writes “That a work of such knowing

innocence as the Ceremony of Carols could result from that dangerous sea

voyage is one of those wondrous mysteries, the sort of contradiction that

confounds those who are determined to find logic — a predictable cause-and-

effect consistency — in the artistic process.”

The singers of the CCC have wrapped their souls around this music. They

have worked remarkably with this intensely difficult repertoire and I am so

pleased with their level of musicianship! This was a piece I performed as a child

and I feel I have been waiting my whole life to be able to teach it.

Thank you for your presence tonight, and may your holiday be filled with joy

and peace.

Huron Indian Carol (Father Jean de Brébeuf, ca. 1642)‘Twas in the moon of wintertime when all the birds had fled The mighty Gitchi Manitou sent angel choirs instead; Before their light the stars grew dim and wondering hunters heard the hymn, Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born, in excelsis gloria. Within a lodge of broken bark the tender babe was found; A ragged robe of rabbit skin enwrapped his beauty round The chiefs from far before him knelt with gifts of fox and beaver pelt. Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born, in excelsis gloria. O children of the forest free, O seed of Manitou The holy Child of earth and heaven is born this day for you. Come kneel before the radiant boy who brings you beauty peace and joy. Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born, in excelsis gloria.

4a. That yongë child when it gan weep with song she lulled him asleep:That was so sweet a melody it passèd alle minstrelsy. The nightingalë sang also: Her song is hoarse and nought thereto:Whoso attendeth to her song and leaveth the first then doth he wrong.4b. O my deare hert, young Jesu sweit, Prepare thy creddil in my spreit,And I sall rock thee to my hert, And never mair from thee depart. But I sall praise thee evermoir With sanges sweit unto thy gloir; The knees of my hert sall I bow, And sing that richt Balulalow.

5. I syng of a mayden that is makeles, Kyng of alle kynges to here sone che ches. He cam also stylle ther his moder was As dewe in Aprylle that fallyt on the gras. He cam also stylle to his moderes bowrAs dew in Aprille that fallyt on the flour. He cam also stylle ther his moder lay As dew in Aprille that fallyt on the spray. Moder and maydyn was never non but che—Wel may swych a lady Godes moder be!

I sing of a maiden That is matchless,King of all kings For her son she chose. He came as still Where his mother wasAs dew in April That falls on the grass. He came as still To his mother’s bowerAs dew in April That falls on the flower. He came as still Where his mother layAs dew in April That falls on the spray.Mother and maiden There was never, ever one but she;Well may such a lady God’s mother be.

6. This little Babe so few days old, is come to rifle Satan’s fold; All hell doth at his presence quake, though he himself for cold do shake; For in this weak unarmed wise the gates of hell he will surprise. With tears he fights and wins the field, His naked breast stands for a shield; His battering shot are babish cries, His arrows looks of weeping eyes,His martial ensigns Cold and Need, and feeble Flesh his warrior’s steed. His camp is pitched in a stall, His bulwark but a broken wall; The crib his trench, haystalks his stakes; of shepherds he his muster makes; And thus, as sure his foe to wound, the angels’ trumps alarum sound. My soul, with Christ join thou in fight; stick to the tents that he hath pight.Within his crib is surest ward; this little Babe will be thy guard. If thou wilt foil thy foes with joy, then flit not from this heavenly Boy.

8. Behold, a silly tender babe, in freezing winter night,In homely manger trembling lies. Alas, a piteous sight! The inns are full; no man will yield This little pilgrim bed.But forced he is with silly beasts in crib to shroud his head. This stable is a Prince’s court, this crib his chair of State; The beasts are parcel of his pomp, the wooden dish his plate. The persons in that poor attire His royal liveries wear; The Prince himself is come from heaven; This pomp is prized there. With joy approach, 0 Christian wight, Do homage to thy King,And highly praise his humble pomp, wich he from Heaven doth bring.

9. Pleasure it is to hear iwis, the Birdes sing,The deer in the dale, the sheep in the vale, the corn springing.God’s purveyance for sustenance, It is for man, it is for man. Then we always to give him praise, And thank him then.

10. Adam lay ybounden, Bounden in a bond;Four thousand winter, Thought he not too long. And all was for an apple, An apple that he took.As clerkes finden, Written in their book.Ne had the apple taken been, The apple taken been,Ne had never our ladie, Abeen heav’ne queen.Blessed be the time That apple taken was,Therefore we moun singen. Deo gracias!

Wassail Song Wassail, Wassail, all over the town,Our bread it is white and ale it is brown; Our bowl it is made of the green maple tree;In the Wassail bowl we’ll drink unto thee.

Here’s a health to the ox and to his right eye,Pray God send our master a good Christmas pie,A good Christmas pie as e’er I did see.In the Wassail bowl we’ll drink unto thee.

Here’s a health to the ox and to his right horn,Pray God send our master a good crop of corn,A good crop of corn as e’er I did see,In the Wassail bowl we’ll drink unto thee.

Here’s a health to the ox and to his long tail,Pray God send our master a good cask of ale,A good cask of ale as e’er I did see,In the Wassail bowl we’ll drink unto thee.

Come, butler, come fill us a bowl of the best; Then I pray that your soul in heaven may rest; But if you do bring us a bowl of the small,May the Devil take butler, bowl and all!

Then here’s to the maid in the lily white smock,Who tripp’d to the door and slipp’d back the lock;Who tripp’d to the door and pull’d back the pin,For to let these jolly Wassailers walk in.

Nina Revering’s choral music experience began at an early age. While growing up in Brazil, she performed in the Coro Infantil do Teatro Municipal under the direction of Elsa Lakschevitz. After moving to Canada, she joined the Toronto Children’s Chorus, directed by Jean Ashworth-Bartle, and performed with noted directors Andrew Davis and Sir David Willcocks. Ms. Revering’s musical training included six years of study in Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music in baroque recorder as well as piano. Ms. Revering’s educational background includes work at the Youth Performing Arts School, and Boston University. She studied baroque

recorder with John Tyson of the New England Conservatory and performed with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus under conductors Seiji Ozawa, John Williams, and John Oliver.

Nina Revering has performed widely as a soloist and chorister throughout the region and around the country. Soloist at St. Mary’s Cathedral from 1994-1997, she was also Victoria Bach Festival’s New Young Artist in 1994. Ms. Revering has been a member of Conspirare since 1995 and was a soloist in the Grammy-nominated Requiem CD, as well as the Threshold of Night CD, recently released under the Harmonia Mundi label.

Ms. Revering taught music in Eanes schools from 1996-2003 and recently returned to the elementary music classroom. A frequent clinician, guest conductor, and vocal adjudicator around the state of Texas, Nina Revering was one of eight conductors selected for participation in the International Symposium for Children’s Choir Directors held in Toronto, Canada in May 2005. Nina Revering will be co-presenting a workshop with Rick Gabrillo on children’s choirs at the 2010 Eastern Division American Choral Directors Association Convention in Philadelphia. Professional affiliations include ACDA and TMEA.

In addition to his work with the Conspirare Youth Choirs, Rick Gabrillo is currently the Assistant Conductor for Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare and the Choir Director of the Traditional Choir at St. Louis Catholic Church in Austin.

Active in the choral music education field throughout Texas, he is in frequent demand as an adjudicator and clinician for regions across the state. Mr. Gabrillo was selected to be a co-presenter of a workshop on music literacy at the 2009 Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio, and he and Nina Revering

will be co-presenting a workshop on children’s choirs at the 2010 Eastern Division

American Choral Directors Association Convention in Philadelphia. He has also been selected to be a Conducting Fellow for the Chorus America Conducting Masterclass in January, 2010 with the Houston Chamber Choir.

After attending the New England Conservatory of Music and Boston University, Mr. Gabrillo completed his undergraduate and masters degrees in choral music education and choral conducting at the University of Texas at Austin in 1996 and 1999 under Craig Hella Johnson.

He was the choral director at Clint Small Middle School in Austin from 1999-2005. During his time at Clint Small Middle School, Mr. Gabrillo was selected as the 2003 2004 CSMS Teacher of the Year, and he was a finalist for the 2004 Austin ISD Middle School Teacher of the Year. From 2002 to 2005, he served as the Region 18 Middle School Vocal Coordinator and UIL Contest Chair, which served the greater Austin area. In 2005, the Clint Small Middle School Concert Choir was selected to perform for the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio.

Mr. Gabrillo is a member of TMEA, ACDA, and TCDA.

Dr. Maimy Fong, pianist & vocal coach, earned a Bachelor’s degree in piano with a concentration in vocal accompanying from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. She also completed Master’s and Doctoral degrees in piano performance at the University of Texas at Austin School of Music. She has worked for the Des Moines Metro Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, and was the first pianist-coach in El Paso Opera’s Artist-in-Residence Program. In Austin, she maintains an active schedule of playing chamber music, instrumental and voice recitals, teaching, and coaching. Dr. Fong had been an accompanist for CYC since its inception. She also

expanded her role this year as the CYC Opera Coordinator.

Auditioning for the Conspirare

Youth ChoirsThe Conspirare Youth Choirs are auditioned treble ensembles for boys and girls ages 9-17 who love to sing. A musical background is preferred, but not required. To schedule an audition, please visit our website at www.conspirare.org/CYC to submit an online audition request form. Additional information regarding audition materials and expectations can also be found on our website. If you do not have internet access, you can also contact the CYC at 512.476.5775 to schedule an audition.

Shining Star Scholarship ProgramThe Scholarship Program: The Conspirare Youth Choirs is fully committed to finding and training young musicians with a deep focus and love for choral singing, regardless of the obstacles that may prevent their participation. In 2006-2007, the CYC created the Shining Star Scholarship Program to support singers in the CYC. With generous donations, the CYC is currently supporting full tuition and uniform costs for three singers.

During the spring, singers who are interested in being considered for this scholarship will complete an application and participate in an audition with the Conspirare Youth Choirs. Following the audition, a scholarship committee will review the applications and audition results and select the singers who best meet the criteria of the scholarship fund based upon skill, teacher recommendations, prior musical experience, and financial need.

Support a Shining Star: Currently, we are seeking donations of $750, which will provide tuition fees, transportation costs, uniform costs, music, and rehearsal supplies for one singer for the entire 2010-2011 season (August 2010 to May 2011). We hope you will consider “adopting” a singer through the Shining Star Scholarship Program. Your tax-deductible $750 contribution to Conspirare will be a life-changing gift for one young singer who would not have this opportunity without your generosity. If a full donation of $750 is not possible for your family at the present time, we are always pleased to accept any donation amount you make to this fund.

Other Ways to Support a Shining Star: It may also be possible that a scholarship recipient may need transportation assistance. If you are passionately committed to the goal of this scholarship fund but cannot financially contribute at the present time, we invite you to become a volunteer driver for this program. As a volunteer driver, you would be responsible for the transportation of the singer from their home or school to each Conspirare Youth Choirs rehearsal and performance. Volunteer drivers are vital to the success of this program. You will ensure that our scholarship recipients have consistent attendance, thereby receiving the highest possible musical training and vocal instruction.

We hope you will consider joining these generous families and organizations who have already contributed to the Shining Star Scholarship Program: Anne, Manny, and Brennan Martinez; Lois VanLaningham in Memory of Todd VanLaningham; Anonymous (2)

To contribute or volunteer for the Shining Star Scholarship Program or for more information, please contact Rick Gabrillo at 512.476.5775 or [email protected].

Conspirare Performing NoteConspirare has the privilege of performing in a variety of beautiful venues. We seek out acoustical and aesthetic environments that can best enhance choral performances and we are deeply grateful to our hosts. While our performing venues may represent specific traditions and the texts of some of our repertoire may also be representative of specific traditions, it is in no way intended to be exclusive of any individual whose experience or set of beliefs is not represented.

Conspirare respects and celebrates the great diversity of religious, artistic, and human experiences represented among our singers and audience members. Our shared musical experiences are intended to bring us together as we all seek to be inspired by the power of great choral music. The audience creates the space in which the music is held.
