Breakthroughs insteadof breakdowns: Rotor cable replacement

High winds also mean considerable loads for the components of a WTG. ln some cases these loads are too high, resulting in a turbine failure. The analysis of failure data shows that many failures occur at the rated output of the turbine, e. g. when the area around the generator rotor cables gets overheated. The result is irreversible damage and thus a potential loss of yield.

But where there is a potential for failure, there are also good ideas: we replace existing rotor cables with the latest generation of cables with a larger cable cross section thus allowing a higher loading also during high-wind periods.

With our specially developed tools and work processes, rotor cables can be replaced very cost eff ectively directly in the nacelle without the need of a crane, leaving the generator in the turbine and you in a good mood.

Advantages and features of rotor cable replacement:

• Prevention of rotor cable overheating

• Higher load-carrying capacity

• Cost-effi cient replacement directly on the WTG

without the need of a crane

• Latest generation of cables with larger cable cross section

• For 2 MW Vestas® V80 VCS® and V90 turbines

Problems with the generator of a wind turbine can make your heart grow heavy. And that is not just because of its six tons in weight. It is, in particular, the small and unforeseen details that are often overlooked but which can cause considerable problems.

Whether it is excessive amounts of graphite dust that can result in short-circuits or a cable whose cross section is, although hardly noticeable, a few millimeters too thin, potentially causing a complete standstill of the turbine. All of these and other problems are part of the important experience gained on site by our engineers and service teams during recent years.

An experience that now forms the basis for solutions which, at a reasonable cost, provide maximum reliability for the operation of the generator of your 2 MW Vestas® V80, V90 and other types of turbines.

Six tons of challenges.

Lightning fast instead of sparks: Slipring box suction.

When the wind blows, electricity should flow. But sometimes it flows where it should not, as for instance in the slipring box, where graphite dust gathers from wear of the carbon brushes. This dust often remains in the slipring box. The results are increased temperatures, formation of sparks or also fl ashovers in the slipring box that can even cause total generator failure.

This susceptibility to faults can be reduced to a minimum with Availon’s slipring box suction, specifi cally extracting the air from the slipring box. During this process, the graphite dust is moved in the air current and automatically removed from the slipring box. Soiling is minimized and servicing is reduced to manual cleaning, saving you time and money. And a lot of dust for the service engineer.

Advantages and features of slipring box suction:

• Minimizing susceptibility of fl ashover and short-circuit faults

• No more unscheduled call-outs

• Less work for service engineers

• Prevention of damage to the generator

• For Vestas® V80 VCS®, V90 2.0 MW and V66 turbines

When carbon brush replace- ment gets too expensive: The carbon brush holder.

Many components of wind turbines are not only aff ected by wind and salty air but also by wear over time. The abrasion of carbon brushes is due to normal wear. But in some cases, this also causes a problem. In the past, fastening elements could fall into the slipring box during dismantling of the brushes and had – also due to the compact design – be found and removed, requiring considerable time.

But even little space off ers considerable room for good ideas. Due to the compact design of the new holder, the fastening components do not have to be completely removed from the device during assembly, speeding up the replacement.

Benefi t: The optimized geometry of the holder and the confi gu-ration of the sliding contacts ensure an even abrasion on both sides and increase the service life of the carbon brushes from one year to eighteen months.

Advantages and features of the carbon brush holder:

• Safe and quick handling during replacement of the carbon brushes

• Even abrasion on feed and trailing side

• Reduced wear of sliprings

• 50% increase in the service life of brushes

• Extension of service intervals from one year to eighteen months

• For Vestas® V80 VCS®, V90 2.0 MW and V66 turbines
