Daimler Trucks North America – the plant that makes Freightliner military vehicles and the Western Star line of specialised trucks - has been awarded a contract to produce 1780 units of the M915A5 6x4 military line haul trucks, reported to be valued at US$377million. In response to the US Army’s lesson’s learned in Iraq and Afghanistan, an upgrade from the previous model M915A3 has been requested with major changes including armour protection in accordance with the Army’s long-term armouring strategy. In addition to enhanced armour, the M915A5s feature a larger cab to store combat gear, personal weapons and ammunition. According to Rick Engel, director for government vehicle sales, “These new vehicles will protect soldiers’ lives while also providing them the additional power and safety enhancements, including Western Star under US Army order advanced collision warning and roll stability control systems, to perform their sustainment missions under the most severe conditions.” The M915A5 recently passed rigorous tests and evaluations at the Army Test Centre, surpassing performance and reliability goals. Transfer on-hold This huge order is great news for the 650 employees at the Oregon plant. The company had previously planned to transfer its manufacturing of Western Star commercial vehicles from the Portland location to one in Mexico - due to being land-locked with no room for expansion - along with plans to transfer Freightliner military vehicle manufacturing operations to North Carolina, but is staying put for the time being. Roger Nielsen, Daimler Trucks North America chief operating officer, said in a press statement that the company would prefer to focus on timely delivery, without the interruption or distraction of a move.
