Since premiering in 2014, TNT’s action-drama “The Last Ship”

has been a roller-coaster of high-stakes missions, tumultuous po-litical tensions and shocking acts of betrayal, and the series is ex-pected to go out on a high note as its fifth and final season ap-proaches its conclusion.

Based on the popular William Brinkley novel of the same name, the show follows the crew of a navy destroyer that is stuck at sea and unable to find a safe port af-ter its crew learns that a virus has wiped out 80 per cent of Earth’s population. What’s ensued over five seasons is a fast-paced saga in which the crew attempted to gain intel on the state of the world and ultimately deliver a cure to the survivors. The penulti-mate episode of “The Last Ship” airs Sunday, Nov. 4, on TNT.

The show’s unique setting and dire apocalyptic plot are what ini-tially drew in many fans; the char-acters’ isolation and limited

knowledge of what’s happening in the world make for a story that’s rich in nail-biting tension. In an interview with Empire, exec-utive producer and co-creator Steven Kane said that from the beginning of the project, he was “totally drawn to the idea of a crew and navy ship being the key to Earth’s survival.” Now in the last season, it seems as though the world is beginning to rebuild itself, but new and unexpected enemies have emerged for Com-mander Tom Chandler (Eric Dane, “Grey’s Anatomy”) and his crew, and this time they have to stave off a world war in the making.

Since the series’ genesis, when the crew of the USS Nathan James first learned about the Red Flu virus outbreak, the characters have been through a whirlwind of obstacles in their attempts to sal-vage humanity. Much of the first two seasons dealt with Center for Disease Control virologist Dr. Ra-chel Scott (Rhona Mitra, “Under-world: Rise of the Lycans,” 2009) working on developing a vaccine for the virus, a plan that was com-

promised by the private interests of several antagonists, including a radical group of “Immunes” who wished to spread the plague and assert themselves as Earth’s inheritors, as well as several world governments that attempt-ed to use the plague as an oppor-tunity for global political control.

After the assassination of Dr. Scott in the second season, Bridg-et Regan (“Jane the Virgin”) was cast as the new female lead, play-ing former U.S. navy intelligence officer Sasha Cooper, who first encountered the crew of the Na-than James while under diplo-matic cover in China. Sasha and her tactical force, Vulture Team, have been in the spotlight ever since.

The current fifth season is set five years after a cure was finally discovered and distributed. But what at first seemed to be a new era of prosperity for humanity has instead seen the emergence of new conflicts. In a way, the show has come full circle, with the old world being destroyed in a final battle with a devastating virus and the new world that’s risen from the ashes of the old just be-ginning the opening moves of its own large-scale conflict. This sea-son, Vulture Team was on an im-portant mission in Panama when they were framed for an attack on the country’s president, poten-tially sparking a new world war. It’s a new world with new antag-onists who have been raising the stakes and compromising the fate of humanity once again.

Even within all the explosive action, the show’s writers have still left room for more fluffy sto-rylines in the final season, includ-ing a romantic one. When Sasha

Cooper first joined the crew of the Nathan James, it was re-vealed that she and Tom Chandler had known each other before; one of the cliffhangers left dan-gling at the end of last season was the question of whether sea-son 5 would see a more romantic relationship develop between them.

Of course, it isn’t just the chemistry between the two leads that’s kept “The Last Ship” on such a solid footing, with a strong cast helping to make the apoca-lyptic drama seem all too real. Vulture Team also includes Danny Green (Travis Van Winkle, “Friday the 13th,” 2009), Wolf Taylor (Bren Foster, “Days of Our Lives”) and Azima Kandie (Jodie Turner-

Smith, “The Neon Demon,” 2016), and as the final two epi-sodes play out, bonds that have long held the team together are tested like never before.

The series has been an explo-sive enterprise from its very first scenes, and everything is coming to a head in its final hours. With

millions of fans eager to see how the fate of the world pans out, the series can expect the kind of explosive send-off that’s only fit-ting as it reaches its conclusion. Be sure to catch the final action firsthand as the penultimate epi-sode of “The Last Ship,” airs Sun-day, Nov. 4, on TNT.

Q: I’m looking for the name of an old movie I saw years ago about some soldiers caught in an underground compound during the war. They eventually run out of candles and must re-main in the dark for years. It might have had Peter Sellers playing a part, however it was not a comedy.

A: You’re quite right that this film is not a comedy. It is, in the words of a contemporary New York Times review, “a chronicle of slow deterioration.” And to an-swer your question, it’s called “The Blockhouse” (1973).

It is about an international group of prisoners of war who be-come trapped in a cellar that has an ample supply of food and wine and an impressive, but ultimately insufficient supply of candles. They remain trapped underground for six years, four of them in darkness after the candles run out.

The Times reviewer, Janet Mas-lin, wasn’t as taken with the film as you are. She also called it “grim, gray and almost as claustrophobic as the situation,” adding that “the story has very little tension to it.”

The only good things she had to say about the film related to two of its stars. One of them was in-deed Peter Sellers, and she said that he only succeeded when he verges on comedy. The other high-light, for Maslin, was the perfor-mance of French actor/singer Charles Aznavour.

Maslin’s review seems even harsher when you discover that the film was based on real events. Its source material was a novel by French author Jean-Paul Clebert, but he based the tale on a true sto-ry — the main difference was that it actually happened to German soldiers rather than Allied ones.

was at the peak of her teen suc-cess — while she was Sam in the beloved sitcom “Who’s the Boss” and starring opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Commando” (1985) — Alyssa Milano was also a pop-music megastar. But only in Japan, which is exactly how she wants it.

Confronted with her pop-star past in a 2013 episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” she expressed a bit of embarrassment, hiding her face while he played an old perfor-mance. She also said that she hadn’t even been back to Japan since she was headlining stadiums there.

Even at the time, she didn’t want her Japanese success to cross over back home. In a 1991 interview with the L.A. Times, she said she didn’t want to be one of those young actors who are “laughed at” for trying a music ca-reer. “I’d much rather have it re-leased where it’s appreciated rath-er than laughed at.”

And it was appreciated — after just four studio albums she had enough success to justify a great-est hits collection.
