attention was great.

3rd Betty Keepax with Danehaven Ellice, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Bitch (29/08/08), performing to "Glad You

After going to visit the audience this little dog settled in well to the music and watched mum beautifully.

7th Chris Sherwood with Glenalbert Morse at Belgarath FS St Ex, a Border Collie Dog (03/04/10), performing to "Desert
Rose" by Sting.
Chris’s outfit was a stunning lilac two piece. This dog was simply stunning with only little lapses of concentration when he wanted
to do his own thing.
8th Dorothy Matthews with Kenmilleven Galahad, a Miniature Schnauzer Dog (21/05/07), performing to "It Must Be Love" by
Don Williams.
This little dog really loves him mum - his tail never stopped and the likeness of dog and handler was picture.
Also worked;
Amanda Jinks with Nell Gwynne of Seefeld, a Boxer Bitch (25/06/02), performing to "The Hollin Bus" by Bobby Crowe and his
Band.
Amanda’s routine started with a skip and the dog was skipping too. A nice happy piece of music and a happy dog as well.
Amanda Jinks with Sulez Soul Man At Stangard, a Boxer Dog (09/08/05), performing to "One - A Chorus Line" by Original
Broadway Cast.
After a bit of a sticky start this dog got into the spirit of the day and did Amanda proud.
Carole Turton with Luclil Worth The Wait, a Cocker Spaniel Dog (25/02/10), performing to "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by Beach
Boys.
After doing his own start to this routine the little dog settled and worked well for his mum finishing with a bow.
Trained;
Penny Hudson with It's Just Happy Harry, a West Highland White Terrier Dog (01/02/05), performing to "On My Radio" by The
Woolpackers.
4

never stopped wagging. Penny decided to turn the routine into a training round.

CLASS 2 Crufts Semi Final Qualifier Advanced Heelwork To Music
Rosettes 1st – 6th Sponsored by Oscars
Trophy & Rosettes 7th & 8th Sponsored in Memory of Tipp Hardman
Lead Judge Karen Sykes, Linda Glover, Michelle Hubbard
Class report by Gill Crawford
When I found out that my job on the Saturday was to do the show report for the Advanced Heelwork To Music my heart missed a
beat.
The only reports I have ever been involved in are the ones that were sent home from school when I was naughty.
Seriously though I was quite worried that I would get it wrong but when I sat at the table there in front of me was a nice set of
guide lines.
So here goes.
1st Lucy Heath with Stillmoor Winter Sun, a Border Collie Bitch (09/02/08), performing to "I've Had The Time Of My Life" by
Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes.
This was a very attentitive little red merle collie. Such a happy little dog whose tail wagged throughout the whole of the
performance. Although there was some barking, the dog soon settled with both dog and handler using up the whole of the ring
and then finishing the routine with the dog leaping on to Lucy’s back, her little tail still wagging and a big smile from Lucy.
2nd Sarah Reed with Beckim One Riva Diva, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (04/11/09), performing to "If My Friends Could See
Me Now" by Jacqueline Dankworth National Symphony Orchestra.
Sarah started with a cheeky little hat lift to the judges before moving off around the ring. Her little dog was not put off at all by
Sarah lifting, rolling and moving the hat around her body. A happy dog with her tail wagging throughout the routine, and moved
with ease. A lovely attentive dog with consistent big smiles from Sarah and a great performance.
3rd Ann DeRizzio with Stillmoor Showstopper HTM A Ex FS A Ex, a Border Collie Dog (19/06/05), performing to "42nd
Street" by John Lesko.
Ann and her big boy started off with some very slow controlled moves building up to an energetic bouncy routine. Both dog and
handler moved across the whole of the ring showcasing Ann’s sparkling choice of outfit and stylish dog. A lovely routine
demonstrating control and energy.
4th Sue Betteridge with Glenalpine Katie HTM I EX FS A Ex, a Border Collie Bitch (10/07/07), performing to "She Wears Red
Feathers" by Guy Mitchell.
Sue never ceases to amaze us and that’s before she even starts the routine. Sue certainly looked the part for this routine wearing
a very colourful grass skirt, bright red leggings and a red feather boa. The look was finished off with a red flower in her hair.
Sue made good use of the ring, her little dog trotting happily whichever position she was in, even when she occasionally ruffled
herself in the grass skirt she maintained position. Sue had a consistent elated expression which made us smile throughout the
routine.
5th Pauline Goddard with Mist of Snowdon, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (02/08/05), performing to "There Is Nothing Like A
Dame" by Ken Darby Male Chorus.
Dressed in a sailor inspired outfit was Pauline Goddard with her little collie bitch Mist of Snowden. Pauline varied the tempo of the
5
heelwork well using different changes of the music to produce a varied performance. This little dog came up on to its back legs in
a lovely bouncy part of the routine and she finished looking up at Pauline as if she were asking for more. A really nice routine.
6th HelenTaylor with Stillmoor Silk N Satin FS N Ex HTM I Ex, a Border Collie Bitch (23/10/09), performing to "Goose Steps
High/The Aristocats" by George Burns/Maurice Chevalier.
Helen and her lovely little dog worked well to this quirky music. The little collie remained extremely attentive throughout with both
dog and handler concentrating hard all the way to the end. This was a really lovely routine and Helen used the whole of the ring
to showcase this dog’s happy energetic style.
7th Kay Laurence with Stillmoor Likely Lad, a Border Collie Dog (21/01/05), performing to "Danzon No 2" by Simon Bolivar
Youth Orchestra.
Kay chose an elegant piece of music which suited her stunning collie. The dog showed fantastic attitude throughout, with both
dog and handler moving beautifully to the music. The incorporation of a large red flag flowing gently around the ring never once
distracted the dog. A lovely idea and performance.
8th Anne Shuker with Splish Splash HTM A Ex FS I Ex, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (01/01/08), performing to "Electricity" by
O.M.D..
Anne wore a smart grey jacket and black trousers which almost seemed to match her little dogs colours. This team both started
on the floor moving slowly as the music, Electricity, began. They then stepped into a nice bouncy rhythm with some interesting
transitions. The routine was finished as it started with both dog and handler on the floor.
Also worked;
Mark Collins with Stillmoor Lapis Cloudberry, a Border Collie Bitch (01/05/06), performing to "Gimme Gimme Gimme" by
Abba.
Mark Collins with Stillmoor Lapis Cloudberry came in the ring looking very smart and launched straight in to the Abba classic
Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. They covered the ring really well, seeming to prefer the more upbeat sections of the music. Mark was
lovely with his dog consistently motivating her which resulted in a lovely routine which they both appeared to enjoy thoroughly.
Mary Muxworthy with Gwynion Solo, a Border Collie Dog (21/05/08), performing to "In The Country/Hitchin A Ride" by Cliff
Richard/Vanity Fair.
Mary launched straight into her routine with her tri colour collie. This little dog has a lovely high stepping action which looked very
stylish. He was quite vocal but the lovely positions and smooth transitions made for energetic viewing. Mary’s little man never
took his eyes off her and this bouncy dog showed off to a great upbeat routine.
Chris de Jong with Jackie's Jessie, a Crossbreed Bitch (03/01/00), performing to "The Trembler" by Duane Eddy.
This little dog got a huge round applause as it was announced that she would be retiring after this performance. Her tail never
stopped wagging and she threw in a few cheeky barks to let everyone know that this was her last competitive performance. There
were lovely elements of changing the tempo and a big bow for a brilliant final appearance in the ring. We all enjoyed a piece of
retirement cake too so thank you. I hope my dog is this happy when she retires.
Diane Jones with Kenmilfore Aniseed, a Standard Poodle Dog (10/09/04), performing to "Papa Louis" by Brotherhood Of
Man.
Diane wore a vibrant purple jacket and black sparkly trousers, the outfit complimenting her smart standard poodle in his matching
bandana. When this dog high steps, he owns the ring, he has a fantastic presence. He was very keen to get to the drum and tap
it almost knocking it off its stand. The very jolly music suited this lovely bouncy dog and was a lovely performance.
Jill Davis with River at Glidersway FS A Ex HTM A Ex, a Working Sheepdog Dog (22/08/03), performing to "Easy Winners" by
Stewart & Bradley James.
Entering the ring in a wonderful outfit consisting of a top adorned with musical notes and music themed paw print trousers, Jill
started the routine by showing off her dog’s high stepping movement. The music really suited the dog’s style with his feet at times
perfectly in time with the music. A fantastic, jolly upbeat routine with an extremely happy dog.
Pat Parsons with Stillmoor Cinder Rose, a Border Collie Bitch (01/05/06), performing to "Rock Medley" by Various.
Although this dog seemed a little distracted at times, Pat worked hard to successfully get her attention and produced some nice
work. Pat had lots of energy and together with her little dog moved well around the ring performing a lovely routine.
Lesley Neville with Red Hot Hamish at Choxxstart HTM I Ex, a Bearded Collie Dog (24/05/07), performing to "A Night Like
This" by Caro Emerald.
A very smart pair entering the ring, immediately using the whole of the ring to their advantage showing off this wonderful dog who
seems to smile when he is performing. A few sneaky barks didn’t distract from the “wow “factor and this lovely pair looked like
they genuinely enjoyed the whole of the routine.
Jackie de Jong with Jackie's Indi FS I Ex HTM I Ex, a Border Collie Dog (31/01/08), performing to "Smoke On The Water" by
Deep Purple.
A very controlled start with an interesting move of the dog moving across Jackie’s front while Jackie moved forward. Jackie chose
a rock classic for her routine and her pace and style suited this. The dog had a lovely puppy like attitude and Jackie smiled
throughout the routine at her little boy’s antics.
Trained;
Cathy Bates with Rusnsol Ruby, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (18/04/06), performing to "Babe" by Take That.
Cathy chose to do a training round. She worked hard to keep this little dog calm during her performance using a short leash to get
the dog into certain positions. The music suited this dog and Cathy was able to get some lovely positions while keeping the dog’s
attention on her.
Christina Oxtoby with Legacy's Eze Ezekiel, a Border Collie Dog (15/07/06), performing to "Another Way To Die" by Jack
White and Alicia Keys.
6
An interesting and dramatic choice of music, Christina used lots of encouragement and play which resulted in some lovely work
from her dog. He seemed a little cheeky today which was why Christina changed the performance to a training round and once
he settled he did some really smart moves. And the finish made him look like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.
Mary Muxworthy with Collywobble Celtic Harry, a Working Sheepdog Dog (01/06/02), performing to "Cheek To Cheek" by
London Musicians Orchestra.
Mary’s training round had everyone laughing as Harry tried to sneak the toy out of the back of Mary’s trousers, the funny thing
was that Mary didn’t even notice at first. Harry’s lovely stylish action was rewarded by Mary at appropriate times when he wasn’t
helping himself and I have no doubt that Mary and the lovely Harry entertained everyone.
So, there we have it, my first attempt at show reporting. Thank you to my lovely daughter Abby as without her writing things down
for me I would have probably ended up with a load of scrawl that I couldn’t decipher. I forgot my glasses.
I think my only regret is that I didn’t ask the handlers for the pet name of their dogs which makes it seem a bit impersonal,
apologies for that.
CLASS 3 Intermediate Heelwork To Music
Lead Judge Helen Taylor, Jackie de Jong, Nicci Hindson
Class report by Mary Muxworthy
1st Kay Laurence with Genabacab Light Merlot, a Working Sheepdog Dog (06/12/08), performing to "Game Of Thrones" by
London Music Works.
Kay effectively used her ‘sword‘ prop to emphasise the dramatic mood of this music. Kay and Time showed us fabulous, accurate
heelwork in all paces and directions. This was an enthralling performance.
2nd Angela Briggs with Wandering Coast To Coast FS I Ex HTM N, a Working Sheepdog Dog (07/07/06), performing to "He
Lives In You" by Tina Turner.
Drift is a super big short haired collie. He worked really hard in this routine, showing a lovely trot in his forward movement. The
routine contained a good variety of heelwork positions and some nice slow pace and lateral work. What a lovely honest dog who
gave his best in everything he did.
3rd Mindy Kerr with Mister Silver Shadow, a German Shepherd Dog (25/01/07), performing to "5 Letras" by Alexis and Fido.
Although it was really hot in the hall by the time this class began it did not affect the effort this dog made, trying his hardest all the
way through the routine with Mindy. The relationship between the two was evident, shown through Mindy’s empathetic handling
of such a big dog, while he worked attentively displaying accurate heelwork positions and moving in time to the music. This was a
young and modern piece of music which really suited the pair.
4th Kay Dunn with Cost A Pretty Pen Pen, a Cocker Spaniel Bitch (25/05/09), performing to "Trust In Me" by Selina Gomez.
There was a lovely start to this routine with Penny looking very cute in her opening pose. The evocative music, clever
choreography and enthusiastic work from this very appealing young dog combine to make this a super performance.
5th Helen Dennis with Goddess Spring of Jucando, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (17/01/09), performing to "Don't Stop Me Now"
by Queen.
Helen looked very smart wearing a sparkly waistcoat as part of her costume. Maia worked really well to this fast moving, upbeat
piece of music, showing good, accurate lateral work across the front. Helen had choreographed some lovely interpretation in this
routine. It was a very nice round.
6th Louise Ince with Try Me Jodi, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (19/04/06), performing to "Rich Girl" by Gwen Steffani.
This lovely tri coloured bitch showed what a keen, eager dog she is trying so hard to get her work right. Louise gave a confident
performance, showing her dog off by walking straight towards and backwards from the judges. This was a lovely routine to watch.
7
7th Jan Debnam with Chesepi Indian Valley HTM N Ex, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever Bitch (04/05/06), performing to "Moi Je
Jeu" by Puppini Sisters.
This was a super combination of Maia a lovely happy dog and Jan a very graceful performer. Using this jolly upbeat music Jan
made good use of the ring showing nice forward and lateral movement while displaying lovely intricate footwork.
8th Kristine Hodgson with Detania Devine Charm HTM N Ex FS I Ex, a Border Collie Dog (22/01/07), performing to
"Capone" by Ronan Hardiman.
This was a fabulous showy piece of music with Kris and Logan moving round the ring with style. Although working at a fast pace,
Logan kept going throughout the routine, was very attentive and tried his hardest.
Also worked;
Kristine Hodgson with The Sorcerer’s Secret HTM N Ex, a Working Sheepdog Dog (05/12/09), performing to "Words" by
Boyzone.
Kris combined this lovely emotive piece of music with her calm, positive handling to produce a super performance with this lovely
enthusiastic dog who worked well, trying his hardest throughout the routine. What a lovely dog.
Erica Hyde with Delark Laurelin Quickstep, a Belgian Shepherd Dog Tervueren Bitch (17/08/05), performing to "Fields Of
Gold" by Hank Marvin & Sting.
The scene was set for this routine by a series of ‘barley stooks’ placed at intervals in the ring. They made lovely props for Erica
and Erian to work round, while also adding variety and interest to the routine.
Linda Glover with Echo Delta Catch Me If You Can, a Working Sheepdog Dog (01/04/07), performing to "Joy" by The Ventures.
This is a fast moving piece of music which suited the pace for Linda and Echo in their routine where we saw good heelwork
positions and movement. Well done both of you.
Trained;
Andrea Rogers with Alvins Pride, a Crossbreed Dog (22/01/03), performing to "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)"
by Abba.
This was a training round. This super dog worked really well. Together Andrea and Paddy demonstrated a variety of heelwork
positions while Paddy gave Andrea fabulous attention and showed us his stylish high stepping trot. He eagerly chased his ball
when Andrea rewarded him and really enjoyed the round.
Roger Reed with Genabacab Quintilla HTM N Ex, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (18/02/02), performing to "Forever In Blue Jeans"
by Royal Philharmonic Orch.
A banging door put Tilly off just before going in the ring, so Roger very sensibly played tuggy with her to settle her down and enjoy
her time in the ring. When she was more settled Roger began working with her and she showed off her high stepping trot. Well
done.
Christina Oxtoby with Legacy's Ruach, a Great Dane Dog (04/04/07), performing to "Sway" by The Pussy Cat Dolls
Christina turned this into a training round as the heat was obviously affecting Ru. His ball cheered him up and it was great to see
such lovely work and enthusiasm from a large dog on such a hot day.
Alisanne Buck with Darkly Dreaming Dexter, a Crossbreed Dog (28/02/08), performing to "The Side Step" by Charles Durning.
This was a training round with this very handsome tri coloured dog. Dexter worked really well with a super happy expression and
waggy tail throughout. During the round, Ali showed us some very nice backwards ‘behind’ work .
Diane Jones with Tawnabawn Astrantia, a Standard Poodle Bitch (23/09/08), performing to "Pick Of the Pops (At The Sign Of
The Swinging Cymbal)" by Brian Fahey/BBC Worldwide Music.
This was a super training round. We saw a very novel start to this routine with both Diane and Saffron playing the cymbal as
indicated by the subtitle – (At The Sign Of The Swinging Cymbal). After this we were treated to lovely heelwork and a good
variety of heelwork positions.
Jan Debnam with Calandrella Algoma HTM N Ex, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever Bitch (10/11/09), performing to "In The Army
Now" by Status Quo.
Jan set the scene for this training round with her ‘camouflage’ Army outfit. There was some very nice work in this routine and the
dog was well motivated by Jan’s use of the tennis ball as a reward. We saw a fabulous backwards creep and some lovely paw
work to finish the routine.
Mo Aegerter with Breeze at Ruffwood, a Crossbreed Bitch (01/06/05), performing to "Pack Up" by Eliza Dolittle.
This happy go lucky music suited this pair for their routine, which contained heelwork in various well maintained positions, some
lovely circling and backing and an ‘aaah’ moment where Breeze puts her paws up on Mo’s chair ( looking very cute ). Breeze
worked willingly throughout the routine.
Karen Sykes with Our Irish Second Chance HTM N Ex FS I Ex, a Crossbreed Bitch (01/04/09), performing to "I Was Born To
Love You" by Freddie Mercury.
Erin worked happily to this fast moving piece of music throughout this training round with Karen effectively using a toy as a reward
for her enthusiastic work.
8
CLASS 4.1 Novice Heelwork To Music Part One
Lead Judge Lesley Neville, Karen Sykes, Ann DeRizzio
Class Report by Jill Davis
1st Barry Bray with Brambledale Balmy Breeze, a Bearded Collie Bitch (23/04/10), performing to "Native New Yorker" by
Odyssey.
Worked last but certainly not least as they won the class, that most elegantly turned out Barry wearing cream t-shirt and slacks
and beautifully polished brown brogues. Breeze did some lovely trotting alongside Barry’s swaggering walk as well as some great
freestyle moves – looking left and right, up on his shoulders, going around him on her hind legs (I call that move up round but
others may have a different term).
2nd Margret Christie with Choxxstart Sweet Fergus, a Bearded Collie Dog (10/04/09), performing to "Eye Level" by Tony Park
Orchestra.
Fergus is a tall Working Beardie who worked closely, accurately and quietly with Margaret and they were rewarded with 2nd place.
3rd Sheila Kendrick with Tithelea Last Crusade HTM St Ex, FS St, a Border Collie Dog (02/02/09), performing to "Bad Things"
by Jace Everett.
Sheila certainly also dressed for the part with a western-style purple shirt with white fringing, cowboy hat, blue jeans and boots.
Indy started out a little distracted occasionally at the start of the routine but then did some lovely close heelwork and got more
attentive as she went along. There was a lovely ending where Indy lies down between Sheila’s feet and she raises her hat.
4th Michelle Hubbard with Mr Hudson, a German Shepherd Dog (18/10/09), performing to "Best Years Of Our Life" by Modern
Romance.
This was Hudson’s first time in the ring and boy did he do well. He is such a beautiful looking German shepherd and Michelle has
sensibly patiently taken her time socialising what was once a very nervous dog but now is no more! When he became a little
distracted Michelle reassured him with the use of her hands and the occasional pat.
5th Caroline Garrett with Midnight Moonshine, a Whippet Bitch (30/08/08), performing to "Sing" by Gary Barlow & The
Commonwealth Band.
Rose is a very beautiful and elegant whippet who works accurately and daintily. Caroline brings out the best of her with her gentle
and quiet handling and they also complemented each other in appearance with the dark grey and white of Rose being matched by
Caroline’s white blouse and dark trousers.
6th Dylan Smith with Corridhu Chase, a Border Collie Dog (19/10/08), performing to "Singing In The Rain" by Mint Royale.
What can one say about Dylan but that he is the smartest dressed young man on the HTM circuit wearing his grey trousers and
waistcoat he looked every inch the gentleman. I am not sure how old Dylan is but he is one of our most successful juniors and
handles his dog with maturity beyond his years. It was a lively routine where Chase worked closely and accurately apart from one
brief moment where he went to take a peek at Grandad filming but Dylan kept his cool and soon had Chase back on track jumping
over a red, white and blue umbrella and of course he did his trademark cartwheel. Well done on coming 6th in the class.
7th Iris Maxfield with Just Call Me Rolo, a Working Sheepdog Dog (19/08/09), performing to "La Tortura" by Shakira.

Another beautifully colour co-ordinated team with Louise’s grey and white top matching the dog’s blue merle coat. Unfortunately

reversing behind Louise.

Misty is a beautiful white German shepherd and looked very good against Sheila’s wonderful costume of a red and orange top that

Heelwork To Music In Finland By Lesley Neville
In early December last year Lesley, received an invitation from Henna Meriharju to go to Finland to teach Heelwork To Music.
Kath and Karen had been to the group two years previously (see http://toplodge.blogspot.co.uk/2010/08/training-in-finland.html
2010) and although Freestyle had been popular there for some years, Heelwork was almost unknown so they introduced the
Heelwork Section to the handlers on their course so it would be very interesting to see how this division of the sport was
developing now.
Lesley invited Jackie de Jong to accompany her on this trip and she happily agreed. The months soon passed and it was time to
leave for Finland
Thursday 16th August; an early start with a cup of tea at 4 30am! Chris and Jackie de Jong arrived at Lesley’s home at 5 30 am
as Chris had kindly offered to drive the two to Manchester Airport for the flight to Helsinki. All went very smoothly including the
transfer from Helsinki Airport to Turku Airport where they were met by Henna. A short drive took them to Vahto and the lovely
converted barn which was to be their home for the next few days.
A chance to freshen up and then a short walk to Henna’s
house for dinner where they met the rest of her family and of
course her two dogs, Madde, Rhodesian Ridgeback, and
Takku, Cross breed of unknown origins!
After an evening spent chatting, mostly about dogs, and
getting to know one another, the two retired to bed, tired but
looking forward to the following day.
Friday 17th August; Henna drove Lesley and Jackie to the
town of Turku and with another friend, Johanna, they spent
most of the day exploring the town plus a little shopping.
The market was fascinating with a wonderful array of berries
on the stalls. Henna explained that this was the season for
berry picking in Finland (the two had already tasted her
scrumptious blueberry pie the night before) and they learned
about “Cloudberries” which were tricky to harvest as they
grew in the swamp areas of the forests! Despite the name
they are a bright orange in colour and look like an orange
raspberry!
Lunch was enjoyed on board a boat on the river which runs through the town, a floating restaurant, and then it was time to return
home for a short rest before setting out again at 6 30pm.
As people have to travel great distances in Finland simply to
meet for training weekends, most of the handlers had arrived
on the Friday evening so Henna had arranged for Lesley and
Jackie to meet them and to help them gain some idea of
everyone’s abilities. Each handler had the opportunity to
perform their routines and receive feedback from Lesley and
Jackie.
The plan was to spend a couple of hours doing this.
Four and a half hours later........!
Everyone was having so much fun and appreciating the
feedback. One thing Lesley and Jackie learned that night
was that the Finnish HTM people were very modest about
their abilities. They described themselves as very
inexperienced but in reality they are extremely talented,
caring and lovely people!
Everyone laughed and joked together, Lesley and Jackie
were suggesting ideas, trying new moves and thoroughly
enjoying themselves watching each dog and handler team
working.
Eventually, Lesley and Jackie retired for the evening, again much later than originally planned, but looking forward to working with
these handlers again the following day.
Saturday 18th August; Day One of the Training Seminar.
All dogs and handlers arrived at the venue ready to start work at 9am. All except one that is, as one of the dogs who had
performed beautifully the previous evening had had an accident during the night by, for some unknown reason, getting out of the

performed beautifully the previous evening had had an accident during the night by, for some unknown reason, getting out of the
window where they were staying onto the roof of the building, and then falling off the roof! Fortunately the dog was not badly
injured, a few cuts to the back feet, but a trip to
the vet and a couple of stitches were needed.
Lesley leads the dance session to warm up the handlers
New moves are learned
Even for the smallest members of the group
18
The rest of the participants spent a very enjoyable day working on moves with their dogs. Again Lesley and Jackie were struck by
how keen and friendly everyone was. All seemed to enjoy the tasks they were given and were very eager to learn more.
The day finished at 5 30 pm, then most of the group went back to Henna’s house for a super barbecue and lots more discussion
about dogs, competitions and training.
It was also very nice to see the intrepid roof climbing dog had now re joined the group looking fine and sporting two pretty pink
bandages on both hind paws, but otherwise unscathed. As the evening grew darker the party moved indoors to sample a lovely
cake that Henna had made for the occasion.
Sunday 19th August Day Two of the Training Seminar.
The morning was spent with the handlers working on
more moves, improving the movement of the dog and a
few games designed to make them think about the sport
from the perspective of the dog. This caused great
hilarity as the pictures show.
A super picnic Cake indoors as the evening grew cooler
So what is the move you want me to do?
By Jove she’s got it
19
The dogs seemed to see the funny side too! (Ho Ho Woof Woof)
After lunch each handler had two opportunities to work on a part of their routine with everyone helping and suggesting ideas. This
was being enjoyed so much that eventually the group were in danger of upsetting the owner of the hall as they had over run the
time by one hour and had to be reminded that it was time to leave!
So, final photos were taken,
Thank you speeches were made, gifts exchanged and then back to Henna’s house for a meal and, yes, Lesley and Jackie did get
to taste some cloudberries as part of a delicious desert before falling into bed, tired but happy with how the day had gone.
Monday 20th August;
Lesley and Jackie had a bit of a lie in as there was no need to get up until 8.30am as they were going sailing with Henna, her
mother, Helena and husband, Calle. It was a short drive to Naantali Sailing Club Marina where they were greeted by Helena and
Calle and welcomed aboard. What a wonderful way to see the islands, 70,000 around the coast of Finland, but they were heading
for only one of them.
After about an hour’s sailing they arrived at the island – what a paradise as they were the only people there. A short exploration of
the cabin, sauna (obligatory to the Finnish way of life) and the forest toilets (only one scoop of wood shavings per use needed)
and they started to prepare for lunch.
20
Lesley and Jackie were handed 6m long fishing poles, baited with a worm, and instructed on how to fish for their dinner! “Just wait
for the pull on the line”!
In just a few minutes Lesley felt the pull on her line and caught her first fish!
(Look by the side of Lesley’s jacket pocket for the one that did not get away!)
It was obvious that it was not going to feed five people, but fortunately Helena and
Calle had played safe and brought some fresh fish with them and soon there were
suitable sizzling sounds from the barbecue.

A picnic in paradise!
21
All too soon it was time to leave the island. As the wind was now against them it would have taken three hours to sail their way
home so the engine was started for the return journey.
After saying their thanks, Lesley, Jackie and Henna
had a walk around the old town of Naantali.
The town is very pretty and very old, and it was
lovely just wandering through the streets looking at
the ornate wooden buildings.
Every evening at 8pm the church doors open and a
man plays a hauntingly beautiful tune on a trumpet
as an “all’s well” to the town.
A lovely end to a lovely day, one to remember.
Tuesday 21st August;
The last day, a walk in the forest with Henna and her dogs, then off to the airport for the journey home.
Thank you “Finland” for the invitation – Lesley and Jackie had a lovely time and hope to return someday.

Getting To Know You More profiles from our members. Please send your profiles with photos if possible to
Mary Ann Nester
I came to England from New York in the early seventies and never went back. I
like to think that being American explains some of my quirky behaviours but I do
realize that nationality alone will never excuse it!
I grew up with dogs, lots of them. My parents had “bird” dogs used for duck
hunting and I can never decide who I take after the most – my father who wanted
them to stay in the kennels when not working or my mother who snuck them into
the house during the day while he was out.
After many dogs - various cross-breeds, boxers, pugs, Goldies, lurchers, Border
Collies and German Shepherds – I have pledged allegiance to the Miniature
Poodle. I don’t know why I love this breed so much. They are natural yappers
and I can’t do a thing with their hair - but they always manage to get me to smile!
Poodle Power!!!
I received my first competitive training in obedience with the Delaneys at the Collar and Lead Club in Hampshire. It was a great
club, very much ahead of its time, and provided fantastic foundations for any dog sport. I’ve tried flyball (ball loader at Crufts) and
then moved on to agility which became my passion! The poodles were finalist at Crufts and Olympia many times and represented
Great Britain at the FCI World Agility Championships in Portugal 2001, Germany 2002 and France 2003.
My first dance partner was Tam, a very stylish border collie, and we had a great time performing at local fundraisers. Our show
stopper move had me executing a cartwheel over him (I was younger and thinner then). I wish there had been HTM shows when
he was alive. I started competing in Freestyle with Jed, a black miniature poodle. Thanks to lots of coaching from Carol Wallace,
Jed took me into Intermediate.
Twizzle, my miniature parti poodle, came next and also made it into Intermediate. He has
demonstrated his dancing skills as a member of the Dog Activities Team at Crufts as well as
while partnering Matthew Hoggard (the Mystery Guest) in “A Question of Sport”. And yes, he is
the parti poodle in the Vanish and Airwick adverts. Tico, my competing border collie, is trying
hard to catch them up! It is not easy being a collie in a house full of poodles.
As a lover of poodles, it would have been practical to train as a dog groomer. Instead I did a
degree in Linguistics and Language Pathology and started my working career at The Royal
National Institute for Deaf. When that contract ended, I took up my studies again and did a post-
graduate diploma in Library and Information Science. If you ever need someone to go “SHHH!”
just ask me. I’ve also taught keep-fit and gymnastics at leisure centres, worked on fruit farms,
and ran a Volunteer Bureau. My last proper job was as a Clinic Administrator at an out-of-hours
emergency veterinary service and I combined this with writing dog training books.
I am now retired and living in Devon so I hope to grow fat on cream teas and brush the poodles’
hair into submission every now and again. And train the collie!

The Open European Championships 2012
By Kath Hardman
It was late 2011 when I received an invitation to be one of the three judges at the 2012 Open European Championship in Prague,
The Czech Republic. I was very honoured to be invited and happy to accept.
The Kennel Club (GB) had decided to support a Team GB for the World Show in Austria held in May and unfortunately as there
was only one application received there would be no Team GB in the World Championship 2012 and by then it was too late to try
and gather interest for the OEC 2012. But it was good that I could show support from GB by judging the competition.
I was also invited to hold a seminar on the Monday following the weekend judging which I agreed to do as they found direct flights
to Prague which meant the workshop was feasible. However, in August still no flight arrangements booked and on contacting the
organisers they said it was a flight from Birmingham which wasn’t showing as available as yet but they would keep checking. It
was only when I heard on the radio that BMI Baby was closing down mid September that I realised they were intending me flying
with a now bankrupt airline.
I contacted them immediately and between us we tried to get similar flights but there were none available so I then had to fly
Birmingham – Frankfurt – Prague and return via Munch. All this extra time flying – or rather time waiting in airports for the next
plane - meant there was no option but to cancel the training day.
From then on all the other arrangements fell into place – the rules made available – and a hotel booked too!!
The rules for the OEC are slightly different to GB – no movement over 2 metres away from the handler in HTM and the three
scoring criteria also differed with different aspects in differing sections! So the next task was to practice judging with these rules.
The day before the Championships, I left home at 4:15am on my lonely trip! My route was all planned and I had Sat Nav however,
my first obstacle was that my main route to the airport, the M42, was signed as closed. Since there was no-one I could ring to
check I would be OK at that time of the day, I had to decide to go via the M69 which meant battle with Sat Nav for 30 minutes
trying to turn me around!!!
I arrived just 10 minutes later than planned and still well in time for the first flight. The travel went remarkably well and no rushing
through airports looking for the gateways with minutes to spare. This was a truly relaxing journey and with time to revise my notes
on the rules once more!
The main organiser Barbora was waiting for me at the airport and she took me on the 30 minute drive to the Hotel arriving there at
4:00pm. Thankfully she supplied me with cake and a bottle of milk so I could make myself the much needed cup of tea! There
would be a Welcome Dinner at the Hotel that evening with all the competitors and the judges attending which would start at
7:00pm – gosh the clocks had moved forward one hour but it had been a very long day already after a very short night’s sleep! So
after a cup of tea, a piece of cake and a “power nap” and I was ready for the evening.
It was a great atmosphere as the teams met in the dining room exchanging their Good Luck gifts and cards. A lovely buffet dinner
24
was followed by the draw for the two days competition. Saturday would be HTM Day – everyone to compete and the top three
competitor scores from each country’s team would be totalled for the Team Championship. There were 30 entries. The draw
started and unfortunately it was decided that I would be the one to call out running order and name. What with Russia, Slovakia,
Azerbaijan etc. entered you can probably imagine some of the names!! Well I made the best attempts I could and it actually lifted
the atmosphere which had soon become quite serious at this point!
I was then faced with the draw for the Sunday Freestyle Class – 47 more names to be drawn and called out!!
Saturday – I was the only person in breakfast at 7:00am because there was practice time available at the competition hall so
everyone was taking full advantage of this. The venue was a 5 minute walk from the hotel – perfect! At 7:30am I was at the
venue – checking the paperwork which had been provided and ready for the day to start. The venue was a sports hall – huge!!!
The ring was a carpeted area of 20m x 15m with a small block wood boundary.
My fellow judges Carmen Mayer from Germany and Andrea (Head Judge) from CZ arrived and we were ready for the Opening
Ceremony on time at 8:00am. Each Team covered a circuit of the arena following their national flag bearers. It was very
spectacular and colourful.
And now it was time to start the competition – 30 routines of Heelwork To Music and I was very impressed at the high standard
these countries have reached in quite a short period for some had only recently “discovered” this division in their countries. The
music was very varied, and a lovely variety of breeds of dogs made for a very entertaining morning.
25
The Team scores were calculated and Russia were declared the worthy winners, Denmark in second place, with Belgium in third
place.
After lunch the top ten individuals were then asked to perform their routines once more. The score of this second round would be
added to the morning’s score and the winner of the Individual Open European Championship would then be announced.
The top ten routines were very good and the placing almost remained the same as in the team competition due to the repeat
performances being of the same quality as the first rounds.
The Individual Scores were calculated and in 1st Place Anja Christiansen with Fćhunden´s Queeny Las (BC) - Denmark, in 2nd
Place Polina I´llina with Shteffi (BSD – Terv) – Russia and in 3rd Place Galina Chogovadze with Sun Light Spot (BC) – Russia.
These three routines thoroughly deserved these placings – very imaginative and very precise work from them all.
The full results are available here http://oec2012.wordpress.com/
After the competition was closed for the day, I returned to the hotel for a well earned break and time to relax and prepare for the
Meeting of the OEC Participants. I had offered to write the minutes of the meeting as thankfully English was the universal
language. The meeting was very busy with representatives from each country.
There was a request for more HTM Positions – there are already 10 available for use – GB’s eight positions plus between the legs
facing either direction. Another 8 positions were proposed “Dog at compass points around the handler – facing and reversed. But
this proposal was defeated as it was felt that there was sufficient option for variety already and including these positions would
start restricting moves allowed in Freestyle.
It was confirmed that the OEC 2013 will be held in The Netherlands but venue and dates still not available.
There were several offers to host the OEC for future years as follows:
2014 Germany, 2015 Azerbaijan and 2016 Sweden.
The competition is growing in popularity and entries were already higher this year – even without a Team GB!
A full report of the minutes is available here:
http://eurohtm.wordpress.com/2012/10/07/minutes-oec-meeting-2012/
After the meeting, several stayed for further socialising but I made my way back to my room – it was to be a long day’s judging on
Sunday and I needed to be alert!!
Sunday;
Sunday started a little later in the morning as no ceremonies necessary! There were 47 entries into the Freestyle division and
once again, we were not disappointed by the standard and innovation demonstrated by the competitors. The Team results were
as follows: In 1st Place The Czech Republic, in 2nd Place Russia and in 3rd place Belgium.
After a break for lunch the judges were gathered back to their places to judge the top ten placed routines to find the Individual
Freestyle Winner. I was hoping that the standard of work would remain as it had been in the morning and as they had shown in
the HTM Finals, however – it was a long day not just for the handlers but also their dogs and some didn’t quite maintain their
previous level of work. But I was quite happy with the placings of the top three.
HTM Team places HTM Individual places
26
In 1st Place Yvonne Belin with Alice (BC) - Switzerland, 2nd Galina Chogovadze with Moja Nadezhda Rolly Royce (BC) - Russia
and in 3rd Place Elke Boxoen with Puma (BC) - Belgium.
So after judging 57 routines my job was now completed. I was pleased with how my judging had gone throughout the two days
and my “winners” were in the top three of each section. The closing ceremony followed and after giving a “judge’s” speech I could
return to the hotel once again.
My final evening was spent back at the venue in the restaurant where several teams were enjoying their celebrations. Thanks to
Emmy and Helle (Denmark), Bob (GB!) and Steve and Corinne (France) for letting me join them.
The OEC is a very special experience – great camaraderie and fabulous atmosphere. I do hope that a Team GB will be able to
attend in future years, it really is something very special to be competing against and yet with all these different countries.
