SAE a sponsor of GoFly ‘personal flying device’ competitionThe top prize is $1 million.

The contest is to design a safe, quiet, ultra-compact, near-VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) personal flying device capable of flying 20 miles while carrying a single person.

The GoFly Prize, which was revealed to the public at SAE’s AeroTech conference in September, is open to everyone. In addition to a $1 million prize for first place, an additional $1 million will be awarded for achievement in various aspects of the competition.

Boeing’s Global Services Vice President of Engineering, Modifications & Maintenance, Lynne Hopper, said at AeroTech: “At Boeing, we believe that it may now be possible to realize one of mankind’s enduring dreams: Personal Flight. We are excited to announce that Boeing is the grand sponsor of an international challenge to create the first ever safe, personal flying device, capable of flying 20 miles while carrying a single person, said Hooper. “This is a challenge for inventors, designers and

dreamers to create a personal flying device, a chance to make history.”

The two-year phased competition will feature a fly-off in October 2019.

SAE launches magazine focused on automated vehicle technologiesRespected mobility experts Larry Burns and Carla Bailo (SAE Vice President-Automotive) each share their vision for the automated-driving “ecosystem,” including the growing integration of “smart” vehicles and “smart” cities, in the inaugural (September 2017) issue of Autonomous Vehicle Engineering. Eight other articles round out the 52-page issue.

“Automated driving and vehicle connectivity have the potential to save lives and offer new mobility solutions for millions of people,” noted Lindsay Brooke, Editor in Chief. “SAE’s Autonomous Vehicle Engineering (AVE) magazine delivers informed reporting and expert analysis of the sensing technologies, computational power, new electrical architectures, infrastructure changes and other developments that are already transforming the means by which we move people and goods.” 

The magazine highlights innovations and future research and business strategies from the incumbent automotive OEM and supplier base, as well as from start-ups and emergent entrepreneurs in the technology sector.

"It's an almost laughable under-statement to say autonomy has quickly consumed the imagination—and the investment strategies—of two immense industrial sectors: transportation and technology," the magazine's Editorial Director, Bill Visnic, writes in the inaugural issue.

A highly respected figure in the automotive industry, Mircea Gradu, Ph.D., this month begins his one-year term as SAE President amid monumental technology shifts that are rocking the automotive industry. SAE has been a source of progress and stability almost since the industry’s inception, and looks assured to continue in that way under Gradu’s leadership.

The Senior Vice President of Validation/Chief Quality Officer at Velodyne LiDAR Inc. is eager to get going.

“I started my involvement with SAE 25 years ago, while I was still working and studying in Stuttgart, Germany,” the Bucharest native and expert in mechatronics told SAE editors. “Becoming the president of an organization that I have always valued and strongly supported is

the culmination of the various honors I received during my career, and I am humbled by this opportunity and motivated to continue to serve our worldwide members to the best of my abilities.”

Gradu, whose SAE contributions include a stint as Vice President-Automotive from 2010 to 2012 (see full bio in sidebar), provided written responses to a number of questions covering his professional and personal life as well as several industry trends.

What do you believe is the value of belonging to a professional organization such as SAE in 2018, when engineers are so pressed for time?

Although 100+ years old, SAE has reinvented and rejuvenated itself multiple times, in order to meet or exceed today’s

extremely fast information pace requirements. Through its various channels, including all the web-based products, SAE places at the fingertips of its members the tools needed in the mobility engineering profession, saving us significant time and effort.

What should SAE do to be more relevant to mobility engineers of the 2020s?

We’re living in exciting times, with the automotive industry situated at the confluence of four major trends with extremely broad influence, beyond the boundaries of the classic transportation space:• Greenhouse gas emissions reduction over the entire lifecycle of the vehicle, promoting the case for alternative energy powertrains, in particular Electrification• Vehicle Connectivity, with all V2X aspects, including Vehicle to Vehicle, Vehicle to Device, Vehicle to Pedestrian, Vehicle to Home, Vehicle to Grid and Vehicle to Infrastructure• Increased levels of vehicle Autonomous Driving capability, with several of the industry giants racing toward the Level 5 (by SAE/NHTSA standards), which does not require any driver intervention• Shared mobility including car sharing (round-trip, one-way, and personal vehicle sharing) and ridesharing (car-pooling, van-pooling)

One of the common denominators of all these trends is the increased need and opportunity for Big Data Collection and Analysis, which they create at an unprecedented rate. The Big Data benefits also the quality, safety, cybersecurity, and delivery process of the vehicle.

The Big Data Analysis techniques and tools are used to understand customer perceptions related to vehicle quality. These techniques can be used to drive continuous improvements in vehicle design, manufacturing, distribution and service. The related tools and skills required in order to materialize these strategies are a blend of established and emerging disciplines, and SAE must provide maximum support to its members in these areas, along with maintaining focus on the more traditional mobility engineering needs.

What are your goals as SAE President? During my presidential mandate,

consistent with the objectives I announced during the selection process, I would like to strongly focus on ADAS and autonomous vehicle technologies, given the significant safety benefits they provide. In addition, I would like to support initiatives in Big Data analytics and vehicle electrification and connectivity—all enablers for higher levels of vehicle automation. This will be done in conjunction with increased attention to the more traditional areas of automotive engineering, subjected also to an accelerated rate of development. Again, the engineering education, the application of the STEM model (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) represents a priority for me and a continuation of the impressive work at SAE by several previous presidents. What are some of your most valuable talents and character traits?

I learned early in my career to listen to the various inputs I received from my talented colleagues, and try to factor them into my decisions and actions. I am always on the lookout for creative ideas and concepts and work diligently to materialize them into innovative new products and processes.

Not many people have as many patents and publications (dozens of each) as you do. How important is “drive” to success?

I have pursued innovation throughout my entire career, and I am particularly proud of awarded patents that make their way into the marketplace as mature products, while the rest are merely records of novel approaches. My motivation comes from a tremendous respect for engineers and for the invaluable contributions they bring to our world.

Getting to know Mircea GraduSAE’s 2018 President was born in Bucharest and earned his MSME at the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest, followed by a doctorate in mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart, Germany. Since then, he has worked mainly on mechatronic systems (the overlap between electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines) and has gained experience and deep knowledge of design, development, manufacturing, safety, and cybersecurity across the automotive and commercial vehicle industries.

He began his career at Daimler-Benz AG in Stuttgart, Germany. Past experience includes key roles at Hyundai; The Timken Company; Chrysler Group LLC in the U.S, where he served as Vice President Powertrain Transmission and Driveline Engineering and Head of Virtual Analysis reporting to the CEO; and USCAR and U.S. Drive Council Member. Dr. Gradu has been awarded 56 patents on mechatronic automotive systems, published over 40

engineering profession and in general for STEM-based education. In my current position as Senior VP of Validation at Velodyne, I have the honor and privilege to work with CEO David Hall, who represents for me the living proof that even in today’s ultra-competitive environments, persistence in innovation, doubled by technical and business leadership, generates success and a lifetime of accomplishments.  

Of what past achievement are you most proud?

In 2008, I won the SAE International Ed Cole Innovation Award for my overall contributions to automotive engineering. Knowing the caliber of the competing candidates and the rigor the selection committee puts in the final decision, along with being associated with the name of one of the top industry and General Motors leaders, represented for me a significant accomplishment.

A member of SAE International since 1994, Gradu’s distinguished career includes being the recipient of the 2008 Edward Cole Award for Automotive Innovation, the 2005 Forest McFarland Award and the SAE-Timken Howard Simpson Innovation Award. He was elected SAE Fellow in 2011 and served as Vice President of SAE International-Automotive from 2010 to 2012.

Now residing in California, Gradu seeks out work and leisure opportunities there together with his wife, Mihaela. “I am an avid mountain biker, kite surfer, and skier, which sometimes distracts me from car-related activities, which span from maintaining and driving my collector 911 Porsche Carrera 3.2 to acquiring LiDAR data in some of our test vehicles,” he said.

concepts invented by Velodyne CEO David Hall, which has already been successfully demonstrated in his Martini 1.0 and Martini 1.5 prototypes. “Crossing the Bay without spilling your martini is what inspired the names of the impressive active suspension boat prototypes, and I look forward to the progress of these fascinating design solutions,” he said.

Was there any single life event that led you to pursue a technical career?

I was born a “car guy” and drove cars long before I could reach the pedals, in my father’s lap on practice courses. While he was certainly entertained by my attempts to steer the vehicle when I was 6, as a doctor he would have been much happier if I had selected a medical college instead of a technical university many years later. However, soon after graduation and witnessing the successful start of my career, he became an advocate for automotive engineering, which knowing him, I consider another of my greatest accomplishments.

How important has your association with SAE been in your career success?

For me SAE has always been the go-to resource for technical information and

standards, reflective of the industry’s position relative to a certain topic. This is based on the fact that the SAE’s products, including publications, standards, and conferences, are all the result of the collective knowledge of our members, and in many cases, provide access to state-of-the-art technology.

Has SAE has been more valuable to you personally or professionally?

I would say SAE helped me both personally, by introducing me to people that I admire and value as friends today, as well as professionally, through the networking and continuous education opportunities.

In general, through my entire career, I have witnessed compelling cases where SAE has provided tremendous support to mobility industries, regulatory organizations,

and providers of engineering education. In recent years, when the auto industry became concerned with cybersecurity and the framework for autonomous vehicles, SAE stepped up and created the initial set of concepts/standards, like the J3061 Cybersecurity Guidebook for Cyber-Physical Vehicle Systems and J3016 to define the levels of Driving Automation for On-Road Motor Vehicles, both embraced by key regulatory organizations.

Any final thoughts?As mobility engineers, we have chosen an

incredible career path that is going through an unprecedented era of change with the

application of autonomous and sensing technologies. The field of automotive engineering has an opportunity to expand its reach, not just to more people around the world but also in terms of the development of technical expertise not previously associated with the automotive industry. Everything from edge computing to advanced cybersecurity will be incorporated into the autonomous vehicles of the near future, allowing them to become possibly the most advanced pieces of hardware made to this point. The fact that these technological advancements will be driven by automotive engineers is extremely exciting to me, and inspiring to younger, aspiring engineers.

Two SAE Members join BOD of engine makerTwo SAE Members have been appointed to the Board of Directors of Achates Power, Inc.: John Wall, Ph.D., and John Koszewnik.

Wall is an SAE Fellow best known as the retired (2015) Chief Technology Officer at Cummins Inc., the world’s largest independent manufacturer of diesel engines and related technologies. He played a key role in the transformation of Cummins’ technical function from about 1,000 engineers based primarily in Columbus, Ind., to more than 6,000 engineers globally. Aside from his status as SAE Fellow, Wall has earned many honors, including induction into the National Academy of Engineering in 2010. He is the 2017 recipient of SAE’s Franz F. Pischinger Powertrain Innovation Award.

Koszewnik has been an SAE Member for 25 years and serves as Chief Technical Officer of Achates Power. Like Wall, he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (2016). Prior to joining Achates Power in 2011, he worked as an engineer at Ford Motor Co. for 30 years.

SAE Member promoted at FordDavid Filipe, a 21-year SAE Member, recently was named Vice President, Powertrain Engineering, at Ford. The 25-year Ford veteran is responsible for all powertrain engineering around the world and reports to Hau Thai-Tang, Executive Vice President, Product Development and Purchasing. Filipe succeeds Bob Fascetti, who retired in October.

Joining Ford in 1992, Filipe has held various positions within Product Development and several global leadership

roles. Most recently, he served as the Vehicle Line Director, North America trucks, large SUVs and commercial vehicles, which included responsibility for overseeing the development and launch of the 2017 Super Duty pickup truck, the 2018 Ford F-150, and the all-new 2018 Expedition.

IIHS head Adrian Lund retiresAdrian K. Lund, Ph.D., in December retired as President of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 24-year SAE Member joined IIHS in 1981 and has served in the top role there since 2006. He has been very active in the General Committee for the SAE Government-Industry Meeting.

Lund’s work includes evaluations of the effectiveness of alcohol-impaired driving and seatbelt use laws, studies of how speed limit changes affect crash risk, and analyses of how vehicle design changes improve crash protection. As IIHS President (and President of the associated Highway Data Loss Institute, Lund initiated new crash test programs to inform consumers about the vehicles that provide the best overall

protection. He launched the first consumer evaluations of crash prevention technologies and led the $30 million expansion of the Vehicle Research Center to enable testing of current and future automated vehicles.

Recent work includes seminal research on the effects of crash avoidance technologies, how crash risk has changed in states that legalized recreational use of marijuana, the benefits of all-offender alcohol interlock laws, and how photo enforcement is reducing red light running and speed-related crashes.

Dossier – Sue Bai of HondaProfiled in this month’s Dossier is Sue Bai, Principal Engineer at Honda R&D Americas, Inc., in Detroit. Her responsibilities include researching connected and automated vehicle technology for future products through internal programs, collaboration with academia, and industry and government programs on various topics related to connectivity and automation.

Before joining Honda, she worked at Nissan Technical Center North America, where her responsibilities included GPS navigation systems and telematics systems research and development, as well as Bluetooth hands-free systems development.

Sue holds eight patents and has authored more than 15 technical papers. She has been chairing and vice-chairing the SAE DSRC Technical Committee for several years, leading V2X standards development to support various pilot deployment programs in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. For several years at SAE’s WCX annual events, Sue has organized and chaired the very popular automated vehicle system technical sessions.

What is the most interesting activity you are engaged in at the moment?The most interesting activity I am currently involved in is being one of the technical leads for the Smart Columbus and Smart Mobility Corridor initiatives in Ohio. These projects enable me and my team to

experiment with innovative research concepts in real-world environment to advance the technology. “The Joy of Mobility” is a Honda objective, and it is exciting to work on these projects that can bring that joy to people’s lives by improving their access to a connected society. What past activity, accomplishment, or memory gives you the most satisfaction?Winning the SAE International Delco ITS Award in 2008 was an amazing honor. The nomination came from Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership (CAMP) colleagues, with whom I had the privilege to work side by

side for years on vehicle safety communication research. This is an organization that encourages noncompetitive research to achieve the common goal of zero fatalities. I was very honored to be recognized by the experts and leaders at CAMP and by SAE.

Earning my third master’s degree was also extremely gratifying. I said to myself after the graduation ceremony, while holding my three-year-old daughter, “I am done with school for good!” I had my son during my first master’s degree program,

and my daughter was born during my second. It took me several years to complete all three graduate programs, which was made easier by the incredible support from my husband. The ultimate reward was to hear from my parents that they were satisfied with my school performances. Of course, they never fail to remind me, jokingly of course, that I should have pursued one or two Ph.D. degrees as well!

work since 2007. I started as the CAMP V2V project liaison to the SAE DSRC Technical Committee. Through joint work at CAMP, I reported output to the technical committee and worked with the members to publish standards documents. Later, I became secretary of the committee, was appointed to vice chair, and was ultimately elected chair.

During my work with the SAE DSRC Technical Committee, connected vehicle standards were significantly enhanced and widely adopted and used in a variety of industry pilot deployment and government regulation processes. I led the international standards harmonization effort, which led to the world’s first common global vehicle-to-infrastructure message standard for US-EU-Japan adoption.

I also initiated pedestrian-vehicle safety communication research at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. and created vehicle-to-pedestrian safety communication standards on the SAE DSRC Technical Committee. These standards expanded the potential safety communication benefit from vehicle drivers to other road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, public safety workers, and people with disabilities. We also incorporated motorcycle-specific needs in the committee work.

I also reorganized the SAE DSRC Technical Committee into various task forces to maximize output from experts with similar knowledge and experience. We published a number of standards that are already used in many field deployment programs worldwide, and are referenced in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Notice of Proposed Rule Making” documents.

more use cases to accommodate various needs that are not limited to a single communication protocol. We are actively working with other V2X-related committees to maximize output and make standards grow with technology progression. I am extremely grateful for the level of support I have received from my colleagues over the past decade.

In addition, I have been organizing and chairing the automated vehicle system technical committee at SAE World Congress since 2015, during which I have recruited

new co-organizers. The responsibility includes soliciting papers, reviewing abstracts and drafts, and organizing sessions. I developed a new panel discussion for WCX 2017, and the audience was too large for the room. Many people stood outside, jamming the hallway! Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. This year, 25 excellent abstracts have been submitted. Our goal is to select the highest-quality abstracts to be presented live at the 2018 SAE WCX in Detroit.

In what way has SAE Membership been most beneficial to you? My exposure through SAE technical standards work and as a WCX organizer has led to invitations to speak at various conferences and further promote V2X technology and link V2X work to automated vehicle systems to enhance the robustness of connected and automated vehicle (CAV)

systems toward the zero-fatality goal. SAE standards are critical enablers to achieving such goals, because the industry needs interoperability for such communication systems, and it can be accomplished only through creating and following industry standards.

At Honda, my SAE-related work has started to get more recognition, which encourages other Honda associates to be more involved in SAE work. It is very satisfying to receive paper submissions from Honda and meet Honda associates at standards committee meetings, where we can exchange ideas on how to influence the industry through external work, not just focusing on internal research and development.

Has any single SAE Member been particularly helpful or inspirational to you?Tom Schaffnit is one of the mentors who helped me tremendously during my early years with the SAE DSRC Technical Committee. Tom is a seasoned V2X expert with decades of experience. Through his mentoring, I quickly learned how to work in the committee and establish trusted relationships with members who come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Tom’s fair and professional way of conducting meetings set a great example for me to follow. I owe a big thank you to Tom.

What advice do you have for SAE Members?Start writing! Do not wait until someone else starts a new document in your area of interest—that may never happen. If you are interested in a particular topic, start organizing a team to propose the work and take ownership of the document creation all the way to publication. It is an industry-driven effort, and it is best for the actual users of the standards to be the ones driving the development of the technical standards to ensure that we are developing something that will be used, not shelved.

What do you like to do in your free time?I like reading non-fiction books about history and self-improvement and spending as much time as possible with my family, given my busy work schedule.

Is there anything else about yourself that you’d like readers to know?SAE technical standards work can sometimes lead to nontechnical conflicts, due to the involvement of various interest groups. It can be overwhelming. However, these tough situations provide a great opportunity to grow and exercise people skills, which are very beneficial at work as well. Therefore, it is worth it!

SAE Mentor ProgramMadhu Raghavan is Group Manager at General Motor’s R&D center in West Bloomfield, Mich. The SAE Fellow’s leadership responsibilities there include leading the Low-Cost Hybrid System (a GM R&D internal start-up). He manages five in-house researchers working on advanced propulsion systems and energy pathways.

Among Madhu’s technical accomplishments is having helped create GM R&D’s electrified propulsion strategy and technology roadmaps. He also has received more than 250 patents on advanced transmission power flows and is co-inventor of GM’s Global 6-speed FWD (Chevy Equinox) and 8-speed RWD (Chevy Corvette Stingray and Camaro) transmission families. Only one chance to make a first impression on a resumeA good first impression is all-important, but many of us might unknowingly be falling short. Dale Wiza, Career Development Chair of the SAE Milwaukee Section, sounds the alarm that many fail to achieve a stellar first impression with the first item on their resume: the objective statement.

Dale is owner of, and recruiter at, Professional Engineering Placements, Inc. near Milwaukee, WI. He cautions that the traditional declarative objective statement is the wrong approach if it's only about you, and it could diminish the glimmering first impression you’re striving for. His advice is to craft the objective statement to demonstrate how your character and knowledge can serve your prospective employer. Use quantifiable, bullet-point results from your experiences to validate the objective statement, and be sure to include any leadership and team involvement here.

Highlight projects or experiences where you’ve “gone the extra mile.” Your examples should solidify your objective statement, so it’s best to have a few stories ready to share. Dale points out that the interview strives to answer the question “Why should we hire you?” so keep that question in mind as you’re choosing which projects and experiences to focus on; the company you

interview with has its own challenges and needs. Know what those are and go in prepared to draw parallels between those needs and your skillset. Your optimism about these parallels and the opportunity to be an asset in solving their problems is essential.

What about before the interview? Developing soft skills is a must, but Dale concedes that possibly the most daunting and ongoing task is keeping up on other engineering disciplines. An innovation in one engineering discipline could be implement-ed in other disciplines, but that can’t happen if not explored. Specialization does

not divest you of staying informed on the latest innovations in disciplines other than your own. The amount of information and data to navigate is ever-growing, and so should be your answers to unsolved problems.

On top of everything else, Dale warns, you need to “beef up” your communication skills and utilize your contacts for mentorship and other purposes. Dale often finds himself suggesting one join SAE as a

rich source of contacts and potential mentors. He directs his clients “to the member roster within SAE.org to get their contacts for various companies...I coach on that quite a bit.”

A possibly more fruitful avenue is the SAE Member Connection website, which has a dedicated section for mentorship that includes an automated mentor-mentee matchmaking feature.

SAE adds color to standardFollowing the establishment of AMS-STD-595 as the authoritative standard regarding regulation and consistency in the color of items produced for government use, SAE International has created new products to aid organizations in avoiding future compliance risks. AMS-STD-595 was adopted for use by the U.S. Department of Defense earlier this year, superseding FED-STD-595 and defining an index system used for purposes including color identification, selection and matching, along with quality control inspection.

SAE International believes its color consistency products, including a fan deck and individually packaged color chips, can help ensure AMS-STD-595 compliance.

“Staying up to date with the new color standard is important, but it can pose a challenge for many organizations,” said Frank Menchaca, Chief Product Officer for SAE International. “We wanted to provide a solution that would make the process as convenient and cost-friendly as possible, especially since products like color chips must be replaced regularly due to color drift or deviation.”

SAE offers a complete, boxed set of all AMS-STD-595 color chips, each packaged in a separate envelope, as well as individual 3-by-5-inch chips supplied in protective envelopes.

Created to be used for color matching and control of items produced for government procurement, color chips are

mandatory for compliance with color matching in accordance with the AMS-STD-595 standard, as they were under its federal predecessor. SAE has also introduced a companion fan deck of color chip representations arranged in numerical order that includes new U.S. Army and Marine Corps colors.

G41 Reliability Committee to meet in JanuaryThe SAE G41 Committee will meet on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino in Reno, Nevada. This is the same location as the 2018 Reliability and Maintainability Symposium, January 22-25, 2018. The committee meeting will take place from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Pacific Time. The room is to be determined.

The G-41 inherited the Tech America standard 0009, “Reliability Program Standard for Systems Design, Development and Manufacturing” and the 0009, “Reliability Program Handbook.” This handbook provides “how to” guidance to industry and government for the reliability activities and methods contained in 0009 for developing reliable products and systems, successfully demonstrating them during test and evaluation, and sustaining them throughout the system/product life cycle.

The committee seeks subject matter experts interested in assisting in the revision of 0009 standard and handbook.

SAE International recently published ARP60493 - Guide to Civil Aircraft Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), an Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) that serves as a comprehensive guide for demonstrating that electrical and electronic systems installed on civil aircraft can operate without mutual electromagnetic interference.

It is specifically oriented to civil aircraft electromagnetic compatibility demon-stration, and can be applied to small airplanes, large transport airplanes, and helicopters. The ARP describes:• Civil aircraft regulations and guidance

• Processes for ensuring effective civil aircraft electromagnetic compatibility

Call for experts: SAE Automated Commercial Vehicle Systems CommitteeThe Automated/Autonomous/Connected Commercial Vehicle Systems Committee, which is organized under the SAE Truck-Bus Council Total Vehicle Steering Committee, is seeking committee participants.

The committee has the responsibility to initiate, develop, review and approve the SAE Technical Reports (Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports) related to automated/autonomous/connected commercial vehicle systems. Vehicle types comprising these systems include vans, utility vehicles, trucks, truck tractor combinations, trailers and buses over 10,000 lb GVWR. The committee explores the varying needs and opportunities related to standards development for Automated Commercial Systems with the objective of systematically integrating relevant aspects of safety, communications, human factors, sensors, performance and powertrain elements, recognizing the significant interdependence of these systems in relevant standards development.

This scope of work is done on behalf of the Total Vehicle Steering Committee, the SAE Truck-Bus Council, and the Technical Standards Board, with the goal of serving the best interests of the public.

The committee has formed four task

Interested in cybersecurity as a career?

In its seventh year, the 2018 SAE CyberAuto Challenge is the groundbreaking event in automotive cybersecurity for high school and college students. The Challenge is a week-long practicum-based workshop comprised of a series of classroom lessons and discussions alternating with hands-on work with real cars, real equipment, real communications protocols, and real industry experts, including automotive engineers, government engineers, and ethical “white hat” hackers.

Experience three days of practical learning and hands-on experiments that culminate with a 24-hour “hack-a-thon” and

debrief. The goal is for students to learn how to collaborate and work with different cross-sectors of the automotive and cybersecurity industries to perform analysis and provide input on current-model, full-featured cars. No other event offers access to training, mentorship and connections to industry experts in this exciting field.

Registration opens for 2018 WCX: The SAE World Congress Experience

Game on for GAMIC ChallengeWhy does it take so long to bring new innovation in automotive and mobility to market? Posed during a casual conversation in 2007, that question led to the creation of GAMIC—the Global Automotive & Mobility Innovation Challenge sponsored by SAE International and the Mi Innovation Alliance.

The commercialization time for new-to-the-industry automotive technologies averages 12-20 years, compared to the consumer electronics incubation period of about 3-5 years. The question of how long it takes for new automotive companies outside of the traditional vendors to reach the market was taken up by David Stout, SAE Detroit Section Member, and Dennis Nash, then chair of the Detroit chapter of the global MIT Enterprise Forum. They wondered what would happen:• If a new business model were created—with a goal of cutting the automotive time-to-market in half by directly introducing select companies to automotive decision-makers, bypassing the layers between bottom and top.• If specific coaching resources were offered to help new entrants to the industry jump-start their learning process in addition to a small stipend, versus a large cash payout and no assistance.

They also asked themselves whether new start-ups, established suppliers looking

for new technology, and SAE itself would see the benefit of such a unique model. The answer was "yes."

As an activity and as a platform, GAMIC continues to provide significant value to both Mi Innovation Alliance and to SAE. For Mi Innovation, a 501-c-3 led by its co-chairs Milton Roye and Dennis Nash, GAMIC is a process for engaging accelerators, companies and universities across the region and across the globe. “Innovation is tough; embracing innovation from outside your own walls is even tougher,” said Roye. “It requires embracing thought processes that don’t follow company norms. It involves building relationships that are not based on organizational charts. It involves trusting

people and ideas that you don’t know very well. And finally, it involves a different mindset of giving and getting that is not transaction-based, but rather on networks across technology companies, innovators, investors, and volunteers in direct and tangential fields of interest.”

Faculty scholarship program announcedUnder a new SAE International program, full-time faculty who are SAE Members can apply for a limited number of faculty scholarships funded by the Teetor Awards program. Up to $2,500 is available to cover registration fees and travel including air, ground, hotel, and meals for one course per year.

Both classroom and eLearning (virtual web seminars and online on-demand) are eligible. Registration in an On-demand online courses is for a 90-day access period.

The Ralph R. Teetor fund was established to promote information sharing and interaction between academia and industry.  Over the years, a variety of programming has been established that supports this mission, including:• Annual Teetor Awards program, which

provides funding for faculty to attend SAE World Congress or a Congress of their choice and to attend an industry tour organized by a host company

• Annual Faculty Advisors Award, which recognizes outstanding faculty, which includes funding to attend an SAE conference of choice

• Industrial Lecture Series, a speaker’s bureau of engineering experts that universities can request. Teetor funds the speaker’s travel and speaking honorarium.The fund is named for the 1936 SAE
