Tips for effective eLearningTips for effective eLearning

Training at a time, pace, place and style that suits youTraining at a time, pace, place and style that suits you

• Allocate quiet time: Manage your time so that you can avoid interruptions and distractions.

• Discuss your schedule with manager and co-workers.

• Be considerate of others: If you use audio material, employ headphones to reduce noise.

• Set realistic learning goals: Balance training with other obligations.

• Be an active participant: eLearners have to assume a good deal of responsibility for their own training.

• Create a peer e-learning group, if possible: If you can determine who else is schedule for the same training, you can meet to discuss and practise concepts that you’ve learned.

• Accommodate your body: If you study for a long period of time, take a break at least hourly. Stand up. Walk around.

• Use all available resources.

• Reflect on what you have learned.

• Share what you have learned.

QuestionsQuestions

Q. What’s Frontline Leadership Training? A. Frontline Leadership Training is the ACS Service training programme designed specifically for our

Managers/Supervisors. The training is directly related to the skills necessary to be an effective and successful Leader in Honeywell.

Q. Why was it developed?A. Managers and Supervisors are a critical group within the business who have a significant role to play

in ensuring we are successful both now and in the future. Investing in developing the skills which are critical to you being effective will be both good for business and your career

Q. I’m really busy, isn’t this just one more thing for me to do?A. The core of this training initiative is an eLearning programme which can be tailored to fit the time

you are available and to suit your needs. Also, key elements of the curriculum are designed to help you be more effective and create time and capacity for you. For example:

People Management• Save time by understanding how to ensure your direct reports are motivated and fully productive• Attract new, creative and high-talent people to Honeywell to fill your open positionsTeam Leadership• Maintain clear and regular communication with remote team members to keep them up-to-date on latest

developments – avoid confusion and time spent on re-work• Gain commitment from remote team members to avoid project conflicts later on

Page 16: Automation and Control Solutions (ACS) 1Honeywell Confidential and Proprietary Management Learning Initiative Frontline Leadership Training.

Automation and Control Solutions (ACS) 16 Honeywell Confidential and Proprietary

Q. What’s the Core Curriculum? Are there other courses available?A. The Core Curriculum consists of 13 courses that serve as the “foundation” for leadership within

ACS Service. They include training in Change Management and Innovation, People Management, Team Leadership, Communication, Decision Making & Problem Solving, Planning, Customer Focus & Service, Managing Conflict & Influencing, Negotiating and Stress Management / Work Life Balance. Additional “Elective” courses are available as part of an ACS Service Frontline Leadership Learning Map. These “Elective” courses consist of additional general management courses, as well as general business and job specific courses.

Q. Are there different levels? How do I know which level I should work at?Yes, there will be a curriculum developed for three levels – Foundation, Experienced and Advanced. There is a guide on the web-site describing the level. For each individual, however, this should be agreed with your Manager and HR Leader.

Q. When will the Experienced and Advanced courses be available?A. These should be available towards the end of the year – there need to be some modifciations to the

system in NetG to be able to get us exactly what we require. In the meantime, you can start using the site and make use of the individual courses contained in the Learning Map.

Automation and Control Solutions (ACS) 17 Honeywell Confidential and Proprietary

Q. I have been selected for the Foundation level, how long do I have to complete these core courses?

A. You have one year, starting October 2003, to complete these courses.

Q. Can I complete the whole Foundation level all at once?A. We recommend that you complete these courses throughout the year. One course per month

is a great way to start.

Q. Should the courses be taken in order?A. While you can take the courses in any order you wish, you may want to consider taking them

in an order that makes most sense to your situation. It is recommended that you work with your RGM/Business Leader to determine the courses that would provide you with the greatest impact, and begin with those courses first.

Q. It looks like I already have experience/knowledge in some of these areas. Do I still need to take the on-line course?

A. The programme has been designed to be taken as a complete whole and it is recommended that even in areas where you feel you have prior knowledge you follow the module as a refresher. This way you will be sure to build the full range of Foundation Skills.

Page 18: Automation and Control Solutions (ACS) 1Honeywell Confidential and Proprietary Management Learning Initiative Frontline Leadership Training.

Automation and Control Solutions (ACS) 18 Honeywell Confidential and Proprietary

Q. What if I prefer classroom training? Is on-line training just as effective?A. Yes, on-line training is very effective. On-line training also gives you a lot of flexibility of

when and where you sign-on. Get the most out of your on-line learning experience! A short inventory has been designed to quickly assess how you best learn in a self-paced training environment. Based on this assessment, suggestions for customizing your on-line training and controlling or altering your learning environment are provided. Select the following link: http://www.netg.com/research/learnerprofile/cgi/survey.exe

Q. Will this training be tracked and added to my CP form?A. No, you will need to manually enter your completed training in your CP form.

Q. Is there on-line support if I get stuck?A. Cheryl Kirby is the first point of contact for support. [email protected]
