• The liberalization of the energy market created for the utilities new constraints and new needs.

• This step is often the occasion, in particular on t he metering level, to introduce new functions, having all the s ame objective :

• Introduced at the beginning of the 1990's (by Elect ricité De France & ACTARIS), the protocol has been standardised by the international workgroup IEC TC13WG14.

• The standard has been evolved from IEC61142 to the actual IEC62056-31.

• It’s the only standardised protocol for the Automatic electricity Meter Reading with a twisted-pair cable.

• This standard is an efficient and low-cost open sol ution for AMM (including Off-site & Automatic Meter Reading).

• More than 10 million meters with an IEC 62056-31 in terface are installed in many countries (1 million more each ye ar).

IEC 62056-31 Introduction

• The IEC 62056-31 standard is based on the installation of a bus connecting all meters of the same site.

• Security of the data

• Plug & Play : Automatic detection of equipments- Master / Slave system.- Each slave has a single address.- The master can collect automatically the addresses of the new slaves.

• No connecting and topology bus constraints- The bus is just an single twisted pair with screen

(example : Indoor telephone cable).

• Galvanic insulation- The bus accepts a temporary accidental connection

to the low voltage network.

• Single or associated with a narrow-band PLC network (IEC 61334-5-1) and a broadband PLC network, this solution can be an essential element of an OMR, AMR or AMM system.
