Welcome toLight Up A Life

We at AuthoraCare Collective are grateful for the opportunity to gather together this holiday season. Our team has worked hard to put together a virtual program that captures the spirit and peacefulness

of our in-person service. While we are optimistic that we will gather together in person again in years to come, we recognize that in this moment, we must fulfill our needs for meaningful togetherness as safely as possible.

We hope that you will take the time to drive by our Hospice Trees of Remembrance at the Kontoor Brands building (400 North Elm St.) in Greensboro and the AuthoraCare Collective Campus (914 Chapel Hill Rd.) in Burlington. These beautiful trees are lit with symbolic lights, representing the lives of those who have been honored or remembered this season.

You can follow along with our service using this program, although the text for the responsive readings will also be shared on-screen and you do not need to have this program handy to participate.

If you so choose, we recommend that you have a regular or electric candle ready to participate in our candle lighting ceremony.

After the service, a recording of the entire event will be posted at authoracare.org/light. You can also make donations to Light Up A Life through the end of the year if you have not yet had the opportunity to honor or remember someone special.

Let there be light. We light this candle in memory of those loved ones no longer with us, those lifelong

companions not beside us today nor waiting for us at home. We remember the importance of their lives in ours,

and we are keenly aware of their absence. May this light illuminate — even in a small way —

a little of the darkness we feel.

Dawn has broken on a beautiful day here at the ocean. I’ve come to refresh my weary spirit and to refuel my tired soul.

I’m so grateful for the peace and the calm of the seashore, where time stands still and un-rushed,

where I can see and feel the beauty all around me.

This is my first morning at the ocean, and as I walk to the beach, feeling the rich, warm sand beneath my feet, I decide to collect a few shells.

It is low tide and I watch, mesmerized, as the ocean rises slowly, curls and then spills its white-laced foam onto the shore.

I walk by a broken scallop shell and leave it to search for more perfect ones.

But then I stop ... go back ...and pick up the broken shell. I realize that this shell is me with my broken heart.

This shell is people who are hurting ... people who have lost loved ones ... people who are frightened or alone ... people with unfulfilled dreams.

This shell has had to fight so hard to keep from being totally crushed by the pounding of the surf ... just as I’ve had to do.

Yet this shell is still out on the beautiful sandy shore ... just as I am.

I am thankful that I haven’t been completely crushed by the heaviness of my heart ... by the pounding of the surf.

If our world were only filled with perfect shells, we would miss some of life’s most important lessons along the way. We would never learn from adversity ... from pain ... from sorrow.

I am thankful for all that I have learned from my brokenness ... for the courage it takes to live with my pain ...

and for the strength it takes to remain on the shore.

Broken shells teach us not to look at our imperfections ... but to look at the beauty ... the great beauty ... of what is still left.
