The Ashram was established in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo, a revolutionary, poet,

philosopher, and Yogi, and his chief disciple and lifelong French companion, Mirra

Alfassa ("The Mother").

The Ashram is a spiritual center for the practice of Integral Yoga and is the major

draw in Pondicherry. It is one of the most popular Ashrams in India for Westerners. It

is also considered one of the most affluent.

Various ashram buildings, workshops, shops, and guesthouses are all around town.

You can recognize the buildings by the pale grey color highlighted with white.

Be sure to see the stone samadhi (tomb) of Surobindo and The Mother located in thecentral courtyard of the main building.

Across from the main ashram building on Rue de la Marine is the educational center.

The center is stocked with books in almost every language. Upcoming events held at

the center including films, plays, and lectures, are posted on the ashram's notice

board.

Entrance to the ashram is free, although donations may be collected. Hours are from 8

a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Children under 3 are not admitted.

Founded in 1926, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram has grown from a small group of two

dozen disciples into a large diversified community with almost 1200 members.

Counting the 400 students of the Centre of Education and the hundreds of devotees

who live nearby, the larger ashram community consists of more than 2000 people.

Situated in a busy city of over 700,000 people, the Ashram is not a quiet place of

retreat but a vibrant centre of life in a modern urban setting. The dynamic character of

the community reflects the life-affirming aim of Sri Aurobindo's Yoga. Work as an

offering to the Divine is an essential aspect of the Yoga, and all Ashramites do a

certain amount of productive work each day in one or another of the Ashram'sdepartments.

In the sadhana or spiritual discipline at the Ashram, there are no obligatory practices,

no rituals, no compulsory meditations or systematic instructions in Yoga. You are left

free to determine the course and pace of your sadhana in accordance with your own

natures. But the general principle of the sadhana is the same for all: there must be a

surrender to the Divine and an opening to the Divine Force so that it may work to

transform one's being.

The Ashram is located in the eastern part of Pondicherry. Ashramites live and work in

a large number of buildings spread throughout the area. The focus of community lifeis the Ashram main building, usually called simply "the Ashram", which consists of

an interconnected block of houses, including those in which Sri Aurobindo and the

Mother lived for most of their lives. At its centre, in a tree-shaded courtyard, lies the

Samadhi, a white-marble shrine where their bodies are laid to rest.

The Ashram provides its members with all they need for a decent and healthy life.

Various departments have been organised to look after the basic requirements of food,

clothing and shelter, as well as medical care. There are also libraries for study and

facilities for a variety of cultural pursuits. The Ashram is administered by the Sri

Aurobindo Ashram Trust.

disciples of the ashram.

Walking along the promenade in Pondi is always an interesting experience. There's

tonnes of roadside food, pedlars selling colorful beads and hordes of tourists & locals

esp. on a weekend evening. You can sit for some time by the sea, just pick a

comfortable rock to perch yourself on and our favorite task as we stared into the

violent sea was munching on a pack of roasted peanuts :D

It is somewhat irritating to see the blatant disregard for the statue of MahatmaGandhi- the father of our nation here. You will see kids and adults using the construct

as a slide/ play area. The litter around is also disheartening :( One scene we saw was

that of a beggar who was sleeping amidst stray dogs, it was a bit heart wrenching...

The cafe on the promenade serves good chilled lemonade and the fries are pretty

good. It is open 24/7 and the view of the sea is to die for!

Walk Along The Promenade

The "Promenade" runs for 1.5 km along Goubert Avenue (Beach Road) overlooking

the Bay of Bengal. At the far southern end is a small children's park. Continuing north

you will pass several statues (Gandhi), monuments (French War Memorial), heritage

buildings (Mairie), even the old lighthouse.

The Bay is clean and mostly blue, although huge rocks prevent you from reaching thewater (no swimming). Most of the time it is too hot to walk during the day but the

Promenade really comes to life at night. Hawkers set up stalls of snack foods. Other

hawkers sell pinwheels and neon-lit toys. Families, couples, and tourists all come out

to walk.

It is a perfect spot to watch the sun set!

Take a stroll down the Promenade and you would enjoy a beautiful seaside scenery.The French buildings along this stretch are also a nice view. Along the way you

would pass by the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

The promenade near the Govt Secretariat is a hub of activty. It comes alive at night.

With lots of restaurants and pubs, you wont be short on good food and a good time...

This garden lies in the far south-west of the old Tamil Town area and was laid out and

designed in 1826 by G.S. Perrorret whose memorial lies in the garden. The gardens

are a little scruffy now but still show formal French styles with clipped trees, flower

beds, gravel walks and fountains. There are said to be over 1,500 species of plants in

the garden and there's even a Japanese Garden and a "Joy" train.

C.S. Perrotet established Botanical Gardens, a beautiful tourist attraction in

Pondicherry in 1826. The garden encloses a good collection of exotic and rare plants

and also houses an aquarium. It has a wealthy and diverse collection of plant species

from many parts of India as well as from abroad.

Aquarium displays many sea living organisms including variety of fish flora. It also

exhibits various methods of fishing adopted in coastal areas., though it is not much

compared to the aquariums we have seen abroad.

Consecrated at the turn of the 20th century, this beautiful brown and white church is

noted for its splendid Gothic architecture. The most beautiful part of the church is the

stained glass windows which depict various saints and events from the life of Jesus

At the entrance to the church grounds is a small shop where you may purchase a

candle (among other religious items). From outside facing the church, go to the right

side of the church where you may light your candle and say a prayer.

We visited the church on New Year's Day when the church was overflowing with

worshippers. The service, especially the singing, was really nice.

This church is within rickshaw distance of Beach Road and is the nicest church in

Pondicherry. Definitely worth a visit!

This very distinctive brown and white painted church is located near the train station

in the south of the city centre. It was built in the 18th century and its most interesting

features are its large stained-glass windows depicting incidents from Christs life.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, constructed in Gothic style, is a highly

revered religious destination in Pondicherry. Lot of visitors and believers are

thronging to this church to offer prayers. One can be blessed by seeing the wonderful

stained glass windows highlighting the life of Jesus.

Dupleix Statue, Pondicherry

The statue of Joseph Francois Dupleix is situated in the beach road, you reach it at the

end of the promenade road and is hard to miss. Dupleix was an integral part of

Pondicherrys colonial past. He was the governor of Pondicherry between 1742 and

1754.The 2.88 m tall statue of Dupleix stands at the southern end of the park. Even

though Dupleix left Pondicherry in 1754, French recognition of his contribution cameonly in 1870, with the commissioning of two statues-one in Pondicherry and the other

in France. It is situated in Goubert Avenue.

Joseph Francois Dupleix (1697-1763) was the French governor here between 1742

and 1754 and much of Pondicherry's colonial past lies around him. He tried to prevent

British supremacy by forming alliances with local princes. This power struggle was

aggravated by the War of Austrian Succession in Europe between England and

France. With the final defeat of the French in the Second Carnatic War, Dupleix

Old Lighthouse, Pondicherry

This 19th century lighthouse is one of Pondicherry's most famous landmarks. Before

the lighthouse was built there wasn't any signal for the ships coming to Pondicherry.

A committee was formed to persuade the goverment to build a lighthouse. After they

agreed it took some time to get the project going.

The foundation was laid in 1835. At the time it was built, it was considered a modern

lighthouse for its time because of its unique architecture of a round tower. It took only

a few months to complete and the inauguration ceremony took place in February

1836. However, the beacon had not arrived from France so the lighthouse was not

operational until it arrived in July 1836.

The lighthouse is 29 meters high. Its round tower sits on a square base with a

foundation nine meters deep to stablilize the sandy ground on which it was built.

The lighthouse is not in use today but is still very interesting to see.

This 19th Century Lighthouse in Pondicherry is a significant landmark and its unique

architecture of a round tower made it a modern lighthouse at the time it was built.

There is an interesting story behind its construction. At that time there was no signal

for the ships coming to Pondicherry. The only light that was there was the fire located

on the top of the Red Hills. Therefore, all the principal merchants and captains of the

ships set up a committee and asked the government to build a lighthouse. After much

delay the project was finally taken up during the tenure of Governor Saint Simon in1835. The engineer of the project, Louis Guerre laid the foundation at the end of 1835

and the inauguration ceremony of the lighthouse took place in February 1836.

However, the lighthouse was not used from that time since the beacon, which was

coming from France, did not reach Pondicherry till later and so the first time it was

used was on 1st July, 1836.

The Old Lighthouse on Goubert Rue was built in 1836 a cost of 10000 French

Francs.Louise Guerre , the engineer became famous because of this outstandingbuilding and soon came to be known as 'Colonial Engineer'.He later became the head

of the Public Works Department in the French India Colony.

Southern France). The most notable feature of the church is its masonry. In order to

create a texture similar to white marble, the finest of limetstone was mixed with

whites of eggs. The facade of the church has two columns. The tops are Ionic and the

bottoms are Doric, both styles of classical architecture.

The other notable feature of the church is an oil painting that was presented by

Napolean. The interior central dome has eight circular openings.

The church setting is very picturesque. Trees and flowers frame the church property.

Looking out from the front you can see the statue of Joan of Arc and the Bay ofBengal. In front of the chruch is a statue of Mary with infant Jesus in her arms.

A beautiful church situated near the sea front.It was built between 1851 and 1855.The

church is facing a statue of Joan of Arc , which you can see in the picture below.

The French War Monument was constructed in honor of those soldiers who lost their

lives in World War I. In the middle of four stark white columns - two on either side -

stands a lone life-size statue of a soldier leaning on a rifle. Inscribed above him the

words, Aux combattants des Indes Franaises morts pour la patrie, 1914-1918.

The statue is illuminated during the annual commemoration celebrated on July 14th -

Bastille Day.

The stylish French War Memorial, located in the renowned Goubert Avenue, is a

monument for those soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. Annual

commemoration is celebrated every year on 14th July; during the period the memorial

gets illuminated beautifully.

Located on the Promenade this statue of Mahatma Gandhi was built by sculptor Roy

Choudhary. It is surrounded by eight exquisitely carved monolithic granite 17th

century pillars that were brought from Gingee - a fort about 70 kms from Pondicherry- after the capture of the fort.
