AUGUST SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE FOR

FOREIGN STUDENTS

UNIVERSITY OF SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

The University of Santiago de Compostela, with over five hundred years of teaching

1 - COURSE OF SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Academic Calender

- Duration: 4 weeks.

- Dates: 5 -30 August, 2013

- Teachers of Spanish language and culture are specialized in teaching

Spanish as a foreign language

- Language levels, according to the Common European Framework of

Reference for Languages (MECRL) initial levels (A1), intermediate (A2

and B1) advance level (B2) superior (C1-C2).

- Placement exams for distribution to qualifying students in groups

according to their language level.

- Schedule: Classes are from Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 14:00.

- 20 lecture hours weekly (80 lecture hours for the whole program):

3 daily lecture hours of Spanish language, workshops, and

1 daily lecture hour of culture.

LEXICAL WORKSHOP

(05/08 – 14/08)

Strengthening and expanding vocabulary, with a

more active approach via games (i.e. puzzles,

crosswords, etc.) in the classroom as well as outside

(i.e. visit to the market and name food seen)

SPEAKING IN SPANISH

(19/08 – 30/08)

The student has acquired sufficient comprehension

and vocabulary to cope with more or less easily in

basic communication contexts, students will be

placed in situations where they can maintain simple

conversations about everyday occurrences (i.e. ask

for a place to buy commodities, etc.)

DISCOVERING

SANTIAGO DE

COMPOSTELA AND

GALICIA

(05/08 – 14/08)

In this workshop, students will become familiar with

the city and region. Eminently practical and

interactive, there will be town quiz-type activities of

a cultural purposes (to know the streets and places

of interest) but also more practical skills to work and

function in a business or a train station.

Furthermore, introduce the student to some of the

most represented traditions and realities of Galicia

(The Way of St. James, parties, etc.).

A2-B1

SPEAKING IN SPANISH

(19/08 – 30/08)

The student has acquired sufficient comprehension

and vocabulary to cope with more or less easily in

basic communication contexts, students will be

placed in situations where they can maintain simple

conversations about everyday occurrences (i.e. ask

for a place to buy commodities, etc.)

OPTION A:

MUSIC, ART, AND

LITERATURE

(5/08 – 30/08)

This workshop will work with some of the most

important artistic prospect, combining literature

with different audiovisual productions (be it music,

cinema, paintings, etc.)

B2-C2

OPTION B:

SPEAKING IN SPANISH

(5/08 – 30/08)

A workshop where students will discuss and propose

a series of current social issues not only related to

the Spanish speaking world, but also of other

countries. It teaches students grammatical structures

and discourse strategies of the genera’s own

discussion, chat, etc. so they can structure their

productions with most correction.

- Grading system and grades: Students receive two grades. 50% of the

grade shall consist of class participation and student progress, and the

other 50% after both oral and written examinations. The grading system

ranges from 0 to 10. Attendance in the morning class must be at 90% to

obtain the certificate.

- Maximum number of students per group for the language class is 15.

- Diploma awarded by International Courses at the University of Santiago

de Compostela with completion of program.

2. Cultural Program

- Program of cultural activities (2/weekly)

- Time: 16:30 to 18:00

- Accompanied by teachers or coordinator of culture.

Proposed Activities

- Guided tour of the city of monuments: Cathedral, squares and ruas de

Compostela.

- Guided tour of historic and artistic heritage of the University.

- Guided tours to museums, exhibitions in the city.

- Cooking Workshops.

- Gatherings, night tours through the city, Tapas outing.

4. Trips On Saturdays it will be organized day trips to towns,

villages, beaches and landscape. It includes tour guide,

International Course staff and transportation.

– On August 10th: Ribera Sacra.

– On August 24 : Sor River and & Mariña Lucense

6. HOUSING

University Halls: Students can chose between double room

and single room with en-suite bathroom, which include daily

cleaning and weekly change of sheets and towels

Eating on-campus: Students may use the dining halls,

paying directly. Breakfast: 2.90€. Meal: 5.60 € and Dinner:

5.60 €.

Host families

All families live in the city center which is 10 to 15 minutes

walking from the campus where classes are taught. Kansai

students will stay in a single on half a meal plan (breakfast and

dinner). It includes washing and ironing of clothes. For

students to leave out of town, families will provide a lunch box.

Shared apartments fully furnishedand placed in down town (5-10 minutes walking

from campus). Fully, kitchen and bathroom fully equipped.
