AUGUST STEWARDSHIP
MOMENT
As a church, we want to continue
to change and improve the lives
of ourselves and others. Giving
helps us become what God
wants us to be.
What holds us back from giv-
ing, keeping us from achieving
our potential in God’s eyes?
For some it is Fears.
Charly meets hundreds of people every week. Most of
them are strangers. Charly gets his confidence to walk
up to a total stranger and let them touch him because he
knows that Jim is there to protect him. They are always
attached to each other when they are working.
Isn’t this true for us. God is always there to protect
us. We are never alone.
It is okay to have fears. We all have them. Acknowl-
edging our fears and asking God to help us overcome
them puts us on the path to overcoming our fears. Giv-
ing and working towards tithing helps you get past the
images we maintain, out from behind our masks. The
ministry of the church becomes a way by which we allow
our lives and lives of others to become changed, healed
as people of grace.
Please join us in prayer:
Dear God,
You’ve given us so much more than we need. Too
often we get caught up in the desire to acquire, but
you patiently wait for us to see the difference be-
tween a need and a want. We may long for a better
job, a bigger house, or a family vacation to an exotic
location. But eventually, God, we realize that all we
need is you. Everything else we possess can be
taken from us in a heartbeat. Indeed, we can never
lose the hope that is in our souls because of you.
That hope anchors us when the storms come and
the winds of change gust through our lives.
Thank you for enduring hope. Amen.
AUGUST MISSIONS FOCUS: REFUGEES

zations like Refugee Focus to set up apartments, provide

that families can have more than the clothes on their back
when they leave everything behind and bring only hope for a
new start with them.

MUSIC MINISTRY
What We Do:
The Adult Handbell Choir plays two to five octave music,
and the Chancel Choir sings four part choral music of all
styles. All youth choirs ring two octave music, and sing
unison to two-part music. All choirs sing and ring for the
sole purpose of glorifying God.
Why We Play and Sing:
Music in the church is one of the most integral parts of
worship, and is one of very few things in the world that is
able to connect us so deeply to God. St. Augustine, a
renowned theologian from the fourth century, said: “He
who sings prays twice.”
Everyone form high school age and older is welcome to
sing and ring in the adult choirs, and everyone from Kin-
dergarten to 8th grade is welcome to sing and ring in the
youth choirs.
There is no experience necessary to join any of the
choirs.
When We Sing:
Adult choirs rehearse on Wednesday evenings
beginning August 2nd.
Hand bell rehearsal: 6 - 7 PM
Chancel Choir rehearsal: 7:05 - 8:15 PM
Youth choirs rehearse on Sunday mornings at 10
AM beginning August 6th.

The Value and Purpose
of the Adult and Youth Choirs at
Chandler United Methodist Church
The value of the adult and youth choirs, and the pur-
pose of any choir in the Church , is the proclamation of
the gospel. This is done in two ways, care and compas-
sion for each choir member, and singing as an expres-
sion of the gospel.
The first value that the adult and youth choirs have is
that we are caring and compassionate for each other.
This means we submit our lives to the Messiahship of
Jesus through participation in a group of people commit-
ted to singing the gospel. The members of the choir
care for each other when hardships arise.
Fellowship is also important to our ministry, as it helps
members get to know each other more intimately. The
adult choirs at CUMC go on outings regularly throughout
the choral season to support one another.
Second is the playing and singing of the gospel. As an
expression of loving and living the gospel, egos are put
aside, and individual voices are carefully subordinated
to group sound. Adam and
Nancy’s job in the life of the church as the directors of
the adult and youth choirs is to lead and coach the
blending of bells and voices to create and grow the
members of each group, rich in harmony, through which
to proclaim the gospel. They do this in a caring and
loving manner. Although there is no prior experience
necessary to be in the groups, their goal is to get the
most out of the ringers and singers.
These are only two of the many values and purposes of
the adult and youth choirs at Chandler UMC. Adam and
Nancy look forward to continuing the tradition of bringing
the gospel to life at Chandler United Methodist Church.
DESERT SOUTHWEST
CONFERENCE
Dear Members and Friends of the Desert Southwest Conference, I greet you in the name and spirit of God who calls us to love one another! The angry rhetoric and violent conflict of hate groups pro-claiming supremacy, denigrating others and resulting in the loss of life and injury are despicable and sinful. Whether in Charlottesville, VA, or any other place where demonstra-tions by hate groups have or are taking place, I condemn their beliefs and actions as being contrary to God’s vision for humanity. I ask you to lift up your voices and join me in denouncing these hateful individuals and groups. United Methodists stand against racism and white supremacy. We are also unapologetic in our commitment to non-violence in the face of evil and hatred. In concert with teachings of many religions, we United Methodists stand with other faiths against hate groups and their actions. We believe that God’s intention for humanity is that we live in peace with one another, loving others as Jesus loved us. In these troubling times, let us remember the vows of our baptismal covenant. We affirm these words at our baptism or whenever we reaffirm our baptism. In these sacred mo-ments, we pledge to “renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of the world, and repent of our sin: and to accept the freedom and power God gives us to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves.” These powerful words remind us that Jesus calls us to
recognize evil and injustice whenever they occur, to speak the truth in unmasking them, and to dedicate ourselves as Christ followers combatting evil, injustice, and oppression. While some are called to engage in counter protest move-ments, others may choose alternate means of responding in the face of the evil of racism and violence. But in the name of Jesus, we must do something! Here are some ideas to consider.
Speak or preach from your heart about your under-
standing of Jesus’ instructions to his followers to be peace-
keepers, loving all persons, not just some. Bring the light
of truth and name those actions that are hurtful and harm-
ful so that persons will no longer be hurt or harmed.
Write, email or telephone your representatives in gov-
ernment leadership to express your strong support of legis-
lation or policies that promote acceptance of all and an end
to senseless violence.
Gather in groups at church or in homes to talk about
the church’s stand against racism. Invite persons to share
their personal experiences and be in dialogue about ways
to counter racism and hatred. Use the model of the Holy
Huddles we have engaged in as an annual conference as
you speak respectfully and prayerfully.
Pray unceasingly for the strength and will to love oth-
ers and to work for peace and nonviolence. Pray for trans-
formation in hearts that are hardened, and that hatred will
be turned to love.
Bring together a group of persons to read and discuss
Bishop Ruben Job’s book, “Three Simple Rules,” as you
rededicate yourself to doing no harm, doing good, and
staying in love with God. Ask your group to discuss to-
gether what these simple rules mean when we are con-
fronted by the evil of hatred and racism.
These are just a few ideas, the tip of the iceberg. They begin to give us an idea of what it means to be a coura-geous church: loving like Jesus, acting for justice, united in hope! You have other great ideas, too! Please share them! I am hopeful that the church can bring about an end to the racism, hatred, and violence that seems to be on the rise. Each of us counts. As always I ask that you hold our nation and our world in prayer.
