1 We continue to improve our technology with better sound and view in the sanctuary during our livestream worship service on Sunday mornings

2 We continue to improve our campus during the COVID-19 virus We have added dual ultraviolet systems in the ac filters in the Administration building These ultraviolet lights kill germs clean the air and the coils 3 To date we have received 182 pledges totaling $1179920 compared to last year of 226 pledges totaling $1157479

One of our communication goals at Emmanuel Lutheran Church was to put a plan in place to update and enhance our church technology Our hope was to develop a technology project to create an environment where people could feel comfortable and find their place while providing opportunity for innovation and creativity Little did we know that we would have to move expeditiously this year We were fortunate that we had a great website de-signed that would serve as a platform to continue our ministries Due to our current environment there was a need to enhance our worship experience We have installed new lights in the Sanctuary and Family Life Center upgraded lighting to LEDrsquos installed 6 cameras upgraded our systems to include advanced technology around sound and projection Computers and monitors for the use of software were also purchased Please know that we are continuing to navigate through our new systems and will get better as we move along and if you would like to support this project please go to our website and donate or you may send a check to the church This project was not budgeted for this year and cost over $40000 We want to thank you for your prayers and encouragement Your kindness allows us to continue and expand our good work at Emmanuel Enjoy the wonderful collage of pictures showing the enhancements to our live stream services

With the arrival of August I sense the days are all melting into one Maybe itrsquos just me but Irsquove been wondering whether our limited social contact may be playing into this Without the wide variety of experiences with social interactions (hellipnot only church but restrictions on businesses and restaurants alongside kids staying home from schoolhellipetc) maybe our days are all running together more Each day has a rather ldquoordinaryrdquo feel through nonspecific repetition causing us to lose track of days separated by special events and before you know it August arrives with our heads spinning ldquoWhere did the days gordquo I established the ldquoone day at a timerdquo approach several years ago when life was getting a bit overwhelming and I remember sitting at an AL-ANON meeting observing the conversa-tion with the theme stamped upon every comment Just take it one day at a time Jesus himself says ldquoSo do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring worries of its own Todays trouble is enough for to-dayrdquo (Matthew 634 NRSV) Well trouble or not there is no negotiation here Each day stands out on its own The twist is making sure your attitude to-ward the dawning of each day begins with some anticipation that special moments are laced into every 24-hour period espe-cially if you take the time to look for the extraordinary amidst the ordinary Little did I know for instance that for the last few years therersquos been an extraordinary plant looped through the branches of one of our trees A few days ago we had quite a show I will give Maria full credit for this because she was the one who brought it to my attention The flower was identified on the internet Did you know there are cacti that only flower once a year and that the rare occur-rence can last a mere 24 hours In fact certain species like Selenicereus grandiflorus only flower once a year at night and withers in the morning Our front yard tree is loaded with them They bloomed in the night and faded within 24 hours but if you saw the show it was spectacular The flower is called the Queen of the Night I found a further description on the internet too The beautiful white blooms of the queen of the night cactus open only at night usually after 8 pm and might stay open until around 10 am the next morning Each flower only blooms for a single night So while queen of the night may bloom throughout the summer only one flower will be open on any given night Herersquos just one of twenty-one that dazzled us If you see it you see it If you miss it you miss it Itrsquos that simple Suddenly Psalm 118 came alive 24This is the day that the LORD has made let us rejoice and be glad in it Why would something so intricately beautiful disappear moments after its appearance unfolds Irsquom not sure but I do know each day is comprised of moments of mystery that come and go without any awareness on our part A person passing by in a car that waves to us through a tinted glass window a kiss on the way out the door a star-filled night a smile from a neighbor a special phone call the opening paragraph of a great book the beating of onersquos heart A small lesson for me and maybe for you as well Donrsquot let the days pass by without opening your eyes to the extraordinary moments that are alongside what we might otherwise categorize as ldquojust another ordinary dayrdquo There are no ordinary days if you have the eyes to see

ANOTHER ADVENTURE If you wonder why you did not see me on camera during our Livestream services for a couple of weeks it is because I visited South Dakota again This time my base of operation was Martin a ranching and dry grain farming town surrounded by the Pine Ridge Reservation (Oglala Sioux) because my husband Greg Gauthier has sufficiently recovered from his latest back sur-gery to start a two- to five-year assignment working for a non-profit dental clinic in Martin My time away included two day-long expeditions one east to Chamberlain (retrieving items I put into storage when my hus-band had emergency surgery) and the other west to Rapid City (picking-up a recliner for his unfurnished apartment) Each of those trips (and when I arrived and departed from the airport) involved plenty of praise and prayer as I drove through a portion of the Badlands By this I mean that the road north of Martin to Kadoka includes phenomenal geologic formations which are both breath-taking examples of Godrsquos creative work (especially vivid colors of exposed sedimentation) and nerve-wracking ex-amples of human engineering (drastic rises drops and curves to navigate) Although it was mostly a ldquoworking vacationrdquo (besides the two day trips I unpacked and organized Gregrsquos stuff did 11 loads of laundry and put together three pieces of furniture) I was able to visit part of the Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge and go on a dinner date in Valentine Nebraska I was also able to attend four church services online Emmanuelrsquos worship in English and three Facebook Live services (the nearest ELCA congregation which is in Kadoka plus my home congregation in Tampa and Gregrsquos new Catholic congregation in Martin) Two take-away thoughts regarding my online experiences are (1) how blessed we are at Emmanuel to have multiple-camera Livestream and people who know how to use the technology and (2) the im-portance of ldquobasicsrdquo like answering messages (I tried to contact the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches in Martin four days ahead of time but neither responded whereas the ELCA church in Kadoka did so despite not having a pastor or staff)

Those living in cramped sub-standard conditions

many of whom are minorities are easily subjected to

place to study and canrsquot safely play outdoors

Unlike many cities and counties in other parts of the country Collier County has no wel-

fare department Thus many of the hungry and homeless among us have nowhere to

turn except to local charities Nearly 1000 children in the Collier County School District

are currently confirmed to be homeless and officials believe the actual number is much

higher

ANOTHER ADVENTURE If you wonder why you did not see me on camera during our Livestream services for a couple of weeks it is because I visited South Dakota again This time my base of operation was Martin a ranching and dry grain farming town surrounded by the Pine Ridge Reservation (Oglala Sioux) because my husband Greg Gauthier has sufficiently recovered from his latest back sur-gery to start a two- to five-year assignment working for a non-profit dental clinic in Martin My time away included two day-long expeditions one east to Chamberlain (retrieving items I put into storage when my hus-band had emergency surgery) and the other west to Rapid City (picking-up a recliner for his unfurnished apartment) Each of those trips (and when I arrived and departed from the airport) involved plenty of praise and prayer as I drove through a portion of the Badlands By this I mean that the road north of Martin to Kadoka includes phenomenal geologic formations which are both breath-taking examples of Godrsquos creative work (especially vivid colors of exposed sedimentation) and nerve-wracking ex-amples of human engineering (drastic rises drops and curves to navigate) Although it was mostly a ldquoworking vacationrdquo (besides the two day trips I unpacked and organized Gregrsquos stuff did 11 loads of laundry and put together three pieces of furniture) I was able to visit part of the Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge and go on a dinner date in Valentine Nebraska I was also able to attend four church services online Emmanuelrsquos worship in English and three Facebook Live services (the nearest ELCA congregation which is in Kadoka plus my home congregation in Tampa and Gregrsquos new Catholic congregation in Martin) Two take-away thoughts regarding my online experiences are (1) how blessed we are at Emmanuel to have multiple-camera Livestream and people who know how to use the technology and (2) the im-portance of ldquobasicsrdquo like answering messages (I tried to contact the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches in Martin four days ahead of time but neither responded whereas the ELCA church in Kadoka did so despite not having a pastor or staff)

Village of Hope School Update Village of Hope has a goal to resume classes at the Village of Hope School on Monday August 3 2020 As of today the Covid-19 death toll in Haiti is 146 The Ministry of Education is proposing a continuation of the 20192020 School Year in August VOH is communicating closely with the Ministry of Education team and following all recommendations Principal Clovis and his teachers are making the appropriate plan to reopen and the health of the students and staff is their top priority They are fo-cusing on proper social distancing number of children per classroom sanitation mask wearing procedures etc Here is how you can help with the reopening of the Village of Hope School Pray that Godrsquos hedge of protection around Haiti continues to keep the staff students and their families healthy and safe Prayerfully consider providing the gift of hope and education to a child by becoming a student sponsor If you are sponsoring a student ensure your sponsorship is up to date and even consider sponsoring another child A special financial gift to the school guaranteeing it will be safe for the students to return will provide sanitizing alcohol disinfectant and additional PPE Partner with other congregations around the country who are making 2500 cloth masks that will be given to the students and teachers Please contact Marni at newsvillageofhopehaitiorg if you are willing to make masks You can use your favorite pattern or one will be provided As one body we are able to amazing things through Christ Thank you for being a blessing to our brothers and sisters in Haiti

A Grace Place Update August 2020

Dear friends at Emmanuel Lutheran Church we asked you to help support Grace Place families during the COVID-19 pandem-ic and you responded Thanks to you emergency food hygiene supplies and educational resources were provided to some of our communitys most vulnerable families through our COVID-19 Relief Fund Together weve distributed over 42600 pounds of food (352500 meals) to 4700 families and we provided 4200 hours of virtual programming and instruction to over 450 families including nearly 900 students We have welcomed over 220 students back to our classrooms (on-campus and virtually) while ensuring CDC health and safety requirements are met Our teachers and program staff are assisting Collier County Public Schools with credit recovery for mid-dle and high school students virtually We have partnered with Lab 24 to provide COVID-19 testing during our Saturday Food Pantry free of charge to any community member Thank you for your continued support For more information please call me at 2392557213 or send me an email at Chrissiegraceplacenaplesorg Chrissie Missal Development Relationship Manager Grace Place for Children and Families

Casseroles for St Matthewrsquos House Our Serving Others Ministry Team provides casseroles prepared by Church members to the St Matthewrsquos House Shelter for the benefit of those shel-tered This has been a very successful outreach led by Carolyn Faust Unfortu-nately the pandemic interrupted the process so we have implemented an al-ternative until the Church reopens Gina Fidler is in the office every Wednesday from 9am to 2pm and has made herself available to distribute the casserole pans lids (and recipes if needed) and receive prepared casseroles to store in the freezer This outreach is still much needed and greatly appreciated by all of those housed in the shelter Please consider picking up a casserole container or two preparing one of the

easy casserole dishes and delivering the cooked casserole back to Gina at the

Church We will also have some containers at our drive-in service to make it

even easier At this time the cooked casseroles can only be accepted at Church

by Gina on Wednesdays from 9am to 2pm Those housed in the shelter and the employees working there all love our home-

made cooked casseroles as only we Lutherans can do

Carol Calling August and another month of waiting and watching and praying for a flattening of the curve I am so thankful for the many people we have to share with in our Blue Zone community Keep praying for each other and shar-ing news of concern about others and yourselves That is how we help each other keep the Faith and keep strong in our courage I know many of us are concerned about going to a physicianrsquos office at this time I am thankful for the many physicians who have become part of the virtual office visit practice Do not hesitate to use this method of com-

munication with your physician I have found it very helpful for answering questions during these trying times Of course it is not the same as a face to face visit but it can alleviate some health concern worries as we stay isolated and safe Condi-tions related to diabetes high blood pressure arthritis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders can often be resolved over the phone or in a videofacetime visit I want to repeat the message that soap and water are still the best hand washing tools but hand sanitizer is acceptable if it is 60 ethyl or 70 isopropyl alcohol They are less effective than soap and water washing but still work against the corona-virus and the cold and flu virus Be sure you use a big enough glob to rub all over the front and back of your hands fingers and nails And it is best to let it dry in contact with your skin Do you ever feel lightheaded or dizzy when you stand up from sitting or lying down This is due to a drop in your blood pres-sure called postural hypotension Certain life style changes can help alleviate this problem 1 Stay hydrated ndash this increases blood volumehellip2 Slowly sit up before standing when getting out of bedhellip3 Place 4mdash6 inch blocks under the head of your bed headboard to lift your head at nighthellip4Remember that alcohol dilates blood vessels and can lead to increased hypotensionhellip5 Exercise regularly 6 Carefully add salt to your food but only after discussing this with your doctor August is National Immunization Awareness Month August 1st is World Lung Cancer Day Wear your mask ndash Stay six feet apart ndash Wash your hands often and thoroughly Be safe and stay well These are my prayers for you and all our friends out there

Congratulations are in order to EA Seminarians Mary Osen and Bob Bonomo for their formal acceptance into ELCA Candidacy as unanimously approved at the Candidacy Committee Meeting of the Florida-Bahamas Syn-od this past Saturday Mary as you may recall was our first seminarian here in Florida (Peace Lutheran ndash Ft

Myers) Bob has recently commenced our Master of Divinity program and he volunteers as a lay leader at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hernando FL

Emmanuel Communities has received commitments for the funding of a Pavilion at Emmanuel Community Park With this in place we are moving forward with the engineering and design of a structure to serve Emmanuel and the community for years to come

This image is serving as our inspiration Utilizing a combination of tradi-tional heavy timber and modern metal roofing we are striving to create an atmosphere of openness wellness and comfort For those seeking ties to heritage structural elements will hint back to stave churches of Norway from earlier centuries

The pavilion will be utilized for worship on Sunday mornings as well as small group gatherings We are also planning on hosting events and the community which can help to ensure the sustainability of the Park

Additional financial support is welcome for fountains and pavers as well as other planned park improvements such as a volley-ball court and a basketball court Longer term we do envision the design and construction of a community hall to serve as a sanctuary on Sundays and numerous other needs when not used for worship
