Pastor Scott . . .

By K. Duane Hamlin, Conference Delegate

Yesterday and today I have been ministering to a young man whose parents were killed in a car wreck yesterday and he was injured. The connection is that the father was a pastor in San Antonio and the call came from our connectional system asking me to respond. It wasn’t an easy task to go sit with someone who just lost their parents and decisions had to be made about his own surgery. I suddenly, temporarily found myself as an “Ecclesiastical Surrogate”, something

I didn’t know existed. Subsequently I discovered that this idea comes even from the Latin “surrogare” in which “a dep-uty of a bishop or an ecclesiastical judge, acting in the absence of his principal and strictly bound by the authority of the latter.” In this case in the absence of the parents, and no other relative, I was asked to act in certain matters on this young man’s behalf. It was a difficult task and a difficult few hours, but I felt that for whatever reason God has me in this very place at this very time. Esther 4:14 may capture this best: “14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your fa-ther’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” That Esther was in the right place at the right time for such a time as this! Where is God using you? In His Grace

Response and Recovery Forefront for UMCOR

When I was at the Rio Texas Annual Conference representing FirstChurch in June, we were made aware of the need for and response to Hurricane Harvey made by the Rio Texas Conference and the United Methodist Committee on Relief. (U.M.C.O.R.). I attended one of our learning sessions devoted to this topic which was presented by some of our “still on-the-ground” UMCOR representatives. We had a very informative session. Near the end I asked how much of the needed recovery in Rockport and Port Aransas/Aransas Pass areas (some of the worst hit) had been accomplished. After some discussion among themselves, the UMCOR representatives gave a figure of not more than 25-30% recovery so far.

Much remains to be done. Over 118,000 FEMA registrations were recorded in the affected counties in our Conference. Our Conference sent in Early Re-sponse Teams as soon as entry to the disaster area was permitted; more than

200 volunteers were in these E.R.T.s. Much more effort has continued in the months since. This has involved long term recovery planning, care management, volunteer train-ing, and construction teams. We can be proud of the millions of dollars given to this re-sponse by Rio Texas churches, individuals, the Texas Methodist Foundation, Methodist Health Care Ministries, and others. UMCOR contributed nearly $6 million and helped ob-

tain another $4.2 million from FEMA for case management. Even this is a fraction of the amount needed to help the most vulnerable families. You can learn more about this effort at riotexasresponse.org. A loaner copy of the booklet with more information is at the reception desk in the office. Ask for the “Rio Texas Response and Recovery Booklet.” Donations are welcomed. (Marked as “Rio Texas Conference Disas-ter” if given through the church or direct payable to “Rio Texas Conference Disaster Response, 16400 Huebner Road, San Antonio, Texas 78248” It is a point of pride that United Methodists reach out to help! Prayers are always welcomed!

By this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the

words the Lord Jesus himself said: “It is more blessed to give than to

receive.” Acts 20:35 (NIV)

Howdy! I just wanted to take a moment to share with you what an awesome summer FirstChurch is having, especially the youth and children of our pretty cool Church Family. Our summer started off with two amazing renditions of Godspell, first with our youth group called Spirit, and the second with a group from Mesquite, TX called Elation. God truly moved in and through both of those groups. We even had a baptism during Spirit’s version! What an awesome opportunity to see God at work. Which brings me to the next cool God thing that’s been going on! This year, I personally had the opportunity to take students to Revive Midwinter and Revive Summer Camp. We took 3 youth and 2 adults to Midwinter, and we took 13 students and 4 adults to Summer camp. During those camps we had one student give their life to Jesus for the first time, six rededicated their lives to following Jesus and 1 youth and 2 adults felt called into ministry. And if you’ve seen Pastor Scott’s facebook post a few weeks ago, you will note that this makes a total of 14 children and youth baptisms since September of 2017. Over the last year, we’ve also had many new members, many visitors, and many visitors who return to worship with us every Sunday. I am thankful for the ministry that God has called me to, but I am even more thankful that God has called me to minister here at San Angelo First. One of my favorite lines from the Chronicles of Narnia series, is “Aslan (the lion) is on the move.” My brothers and Sisters, God is on the move, and it is very exciting to be a part of and to witness! Blessings! PASTOR BRYAN

It’s been a little over a month since I’ve been back in San Angelo and I’m starting to feel at home already. I’m slowly meeting people and getting a feel for what First United Methodist Church of San Angelo is passionate about. Thank you for being so welcoming. As your new Wesley Nurse, I hope to bring this congregation’s passions for the community together to build a healthier church and community. There are already plans in motion to bring more pro-

grams to the church and reach out to those in need. Things to look forward to including new exercise class, social activities, and vision screenings uninsured to name a few. Dates are still to be deter-mined and will be posted as soon as they are confirmed. If you are interested in participating or vol-unteering please contact me at 325-8981 ext. 2153. Blessings, Lesa Parry, Wesley Nurse

Your calendar needs these!. . .

If you are, then, now is the time to begin constructing your wares to sell on October 13th at the first annual Artisans & Crafters Gathering to be held at FirstChurch. You, as an individual, may realize your own profits OR, donate to whatever mission you prefer. Sunday School classes and other groups may want to work together making their own items (handmade) to sell, and use the profits for the class’ own mission and service projects. October 13th will be here before you know. Vendor Booth Applications are available in the office or you can download one from our website: first-methodist.net. The deadline to reserve a booth is September 1st. Your booth can offer hand-made items for sale. Everyone is invited to participate by crafting and producing art work to be sold. Outside vendors from the community and from other churches will also participate. Space rental fees will go into a special budget for the church to support our mis-sions and service. This festival will require a lot of volunteers to help get our building ready and set up for the event, and then, get it reassembled for church on the next day. Get ready to become involved. Consid-er how you can be involved. If you have questions, feel free to collar Beth McCrea, Sandy Pedersen, Sherrie Walker or Betsy Sadler. They will be happy to answer questions.

COSTA RICA Nineteen excited and willing servants left early at 5:30 am on July 21st for the 2018 Costa Rica Mission Trip. This year, the team worked in the Puerto Viejo re-gion of Costa Rica helping to build a church. In the past the team has worked at the Chil-dren’s Home. Despite the heavy rainfall almost everyday, some type of construction work was provided each day until approx-imately 3:00 in the afternoon. After cleaning up the worksite, the team led Vacation Bible

School for area children. The Puerto Viejo region is a rural area and is much different than the San Jose where the pace and traffic is fast and challenging! Team members were: Scott Baring, Karena Doss, Vicki Draper, Kevin

Grimes, Colby Grimes, Delaney Grimes, Anne Hardegree, David Hardegree, Matt Hardegree, D’Ann Kuhlmann, Kevin Porche, Ray Stubblefield, Carol Santry, Camille Santry, Brenda Stone, Jimmie VonGonten, Billy Tims, Will Wiggins and Gray-son Wiggins. The team is very grateful to FUMC for their continued support to this mis-

sion by being so gener-ous financially as well through encouragement and prayer. We are blessed to have such a wonderful church fami-ly.

The generator and dental chair FUMC’s Christmas donations helped purchase for the clinic.

It was an amazing time in Costa Rica. We tied rebar, set column frames, laid in a culvert, and literally poured the foundation of a new church. We had an awesome group who didn't let heat, rain, or exhaustion damper

our spirits and worked through every obstacle in our path. Two of the 3 men that worked with us were pas-tors who worked with everything they had to improve their lives and the lives of their congregations. I am

truly blessed to be a part of this mission team and hope that we left a fraction of the impression on Costa Rica that all the people left on us.

Pura Vida

Blessings, joy, and love abound for the mission team and the beautiful people they met.

Mary Hankins was Executive Director for Wesley Daily Bread Soup Kitchen for thirty years. She remembered: “I saw kids coming out of the bushes and going through a dumpster looking for food. I was so thankful to be involved in 1983 when Fr. Bob Hedges and Rev. Eugene Raphael decided it was time to start a soup kitchen in San Angelo. God had been working with me for a long, long time on that.” Without the support of the community, Wesley Daily Bread Soup Kitchen would not have the funds to sustain this vital program. Donations provide hot meals, clothing, job assistance, health care, counseling, and travel assistance to doctor appointments for those in need. This year we will memorialize Mary Hankins with our 1st Mary Hankins Memorial Golf Tournament.

Trackers of Truth by Seedbed Kids ABOUT TRACKERS OF TRUTH

Trackers of Truth is a program designed to develop the basics of Christianity in our chil-dren, instilling in them a knowledge of where truth is found, examples of Biblical

“Trackers of Truth,” and a desire to seek truth for themselves. Using a mixed agriculture and time-travel theme, the children will go through the Old Tes-tament in chronological order, learning many highlights of the Old Testament stories. At

the same time, they will learn of the many glimpses of the coming Savior, as revealed in the New Testament. They will soon understand that in the Old Testament, Jesus was present but concealed, whereas in the New Testament, Jesus was revealed. Each week, the chil-dren will also learn practical lessons of personal application to assist them in their own

spiritual growth.

AUGUST 2018

Sunday School will continue back on its normal course of study with our series on “Worship” and this series will continue through the summer. Come join us!

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer and finding ways to stay cool in this heat! For starters….. PRAY FOR RAIN!! I know everyone is scattered about right now, camps, vacations, grandparents, etc… I’ve seen a few of you here and there when you’ve been in town. Come join us on Sunday mornings in Cross Roads for summer Bible study, fellowship and food at 9:30. We are closing in on the last few lessons of our series “Worship” by exploring passages from the book of Leviticus. We will finish

the “Bible Lessons for Youth” Sunday School series about the middle of August. This will complete our study with BL4Y. We have been fortunate enough on Sunday mornings to explore the Bi-ble together on topics of God-Sovereignty, Creation, Covenant, Faith, Love, Call, Justice and Wor-ship and how all of this fits into our own personal journey with God! The lessons have been in-

formative, fun, spiritual, provided great discus-sion and have been creative. The Methodist Church did an excellent job on this curriculum. I believe we all grow in a variety of ways on Sunday mornings, thanks for making Sunday morning Cross Roads a great place to be! I have plenty of openings on Sunday morn-ing for Sunday morning snacks. If you could help out please get on sign-up genius and sign up for a date or email me let me know. I will keep Summer Snack sign ups open until my last Sunday. The new youth director will have a plan for what Sunday mornings will look like

under their direction. This is an exciting time for our youth and the church as we begin to look for a new face to fulfill the youth directors responsibilities . Please keep our youth, the church and church leadership in your prayers as we begin to seek out a new person to lead our youth. Regarding Spirit, I have already begun searching and making plans for the new year regarding tour dates, destinations, music and fundraisers. I will provide you with a schedule and more infor-mation regarding the year once Spirit begins. Spirit start date is September 5th, 6:00, Spirit room. This past year was a great year and I’m looking forward to a new one! Once we transition to a new youth director , I will gladly remove those that wish to be removed from my youth email list and this email will now become my Spirit contacts. Until then, I will continue to keep everyone informed through this email the way I always have . Everyone stay cool! God Bless, Tony
