While we enjoy our summer vacations, free from the calendar constraints of the school year, as parents, we are still ultimately in planning mode for the next year. Personally, I’m finishing my packing and getting ready to put my family on a plane to start our new journey in Michigan at the end of July. Amongst the suitcases and boxes in our house is a rustle of excitement. Summer is here and with our move, we are about to embark on a vacation like no other.

Deciding to send just a few boxes of personal items, it became clear very quickly what was important to us.

Each of the children was given a box and we asked them to pick the things that they wanted to take. It has been an interesting lesson for all of us in what makes a house a home.

My great-grandmothers brass candlesticks, the tallit made by a family friend for my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah, some Judaic art on our walls, and the blessing for our house. We found that we are surrounded by our Judaism and the sense of belonging and cultural identity that makes us feel at home wherever we go.

An identity is what allows a person to find the inner strength to stand up to the pressures of negative influences, peers and external fears. As we live in an ever changing world, children today need the foundation of a solid identity more than ever before. By imparting knowledge and imprinting memories of warm Jewish experiences, I know that we can inspire the next generation of Jews to find their rightful place.

In the words of Natan Sharansky, Human Rights Activist, Author, former Russian Refusnik and Member of Knesset (Israeli Government):

“Identity is what makes your life bigger than your physical existence – what gives meaning… You have a history to which you belong.”

The Judaism we teach our children during their childhood gives them an identity that becomes the stalwart of their adult lives. This sense of belonging and cultural identity is the greatest gift we can share. I look forward to meeting you all and working with your children this coming year in Religious School. The boxes are packed and we are on our way.

As I stood on the bima on Shavuot considering myself incredibly blessed to be in my position leading my congregation in worship, I couldn’t help but also won-der what we could be doing better. I looked out on our congregation, as I often do and wondered why so few Jews are affiliated?

That afternoon I contemplat-ed what was happening in our society and our commu-

nity that keeps Jews away from shul. Recently I read a book called, “Playlist Judaism: Making Choices for a Vital Future”, by Kerry M. Olitzky. In his book Olitzky uses this analogy: When LP’s (Long Play) records were the way in which one listened to music you had to buy an entire album for the one song you wanted to listen to. Not only that, you had to listen to all the other songs before getting to the one song you bought the album for. Today, one has a playlist. You can buy only the song you want to listen to and put it in a playlist with all the other songs you want to hear. One no longer needs to suffer through listening to music they do not want to listen to. Olitzky compares this to the institution of the Synagogue, saying people don’t want to buy the whole membership when all they may want are High Holiday tickets, or bar/bat mitz-vah tutoring, or religious school.

Over the past 20+ years I have read many books similar to Olitzky’s, and after studying our congregation’s history, I find that this is not a new issue. In our Executive Board minutes of the late 1950’s, they were discussing the issue of getting more members to affiliate and come to services. What I (and Orlitzky) think is different today is that this generation is a very self-centered generation. As Olitzky says, “The center of their Jewish life is built around them, as individuals, rather than around an institution, especially a singular one.” This is very different from the generations before who felt it was im-portant to support their synagogue because the institution was part of the community. However, I also think that this genera-tion would affiliate if the synagogue re-thought its definition of the institution.

Synagogues are no longer the center of the community as they were in the 20th century being one of the few places where Jews could be Jews. Jews today are accepted pretty much where ever they go, and they can be and do Jewish anywhere. I, however, disagree with Olitzky’s idea that this genera-tion wants “Playlist Judaism” or what I would call “cafeteria style” Judaism, where they can pick, choose, and pay for only what they want. For many years the synagogue has been the central institution for the Jewish community so there is

a sense that it will always be there when one needs it. If the synagogue is no longer central then we need to ask ourselves how we get Jews to affiliate? As a congregation we need to contemplate this question and try and answer it. It is my be-lief that people will always buy what has value to them. It is true in most synagogues, including ours, families are required to be members if they want their children to attend religious school, and if they wish to partake in High Holiday Services. So if you don’t have children in religious school and/or don’t attend High Holiday services why affiliate? Because if one does not affiliate, the institution of the synagogue will cease to exist taking with it all the programming and community one loves. It is my belief that the first step to change is to take action.

What does this mean? For those of us already members and involved at Temple we need to reach out to those not so involved and get them involved.

It means paying ones dues on time, and if you are able, to give more. It means VOLUNTEERING! Our value is in our programming and community, but we need people to help.

It means participating in events and talking up all the great things that are happening at Temple Emanu-El to one’s friends and in the community.

It means coming to services and bringing a friend. This High Holiday season as I look out on our congregation, I hope to see our sanctuary full of amazing, wonderful, motivated, and committed members. And as you approach the High Holidays I hope you will consider doing more, so Temple Emanu-El can always be part of the community.

Temple Community Garden – All Grown Up!

The dog days of summer have not stopped the dedicated team of vol-unteers from tending the Temple Emanu-El Community Garden. Different types of organic lettuce and tangy garlic have been harvested and donated to the senior citizens next door and Yad Ezra. Our heirloom tomatoes are coming into their own in August, as are the flowers, broccoli, Swiss chard, herbs, cucumbers, beans and peas. Broom corn and sunflowers are getting tall in preparation for decorating our Temple Sukkah.

While passing by, take a moment to walk over to the raised beds and admire Mother Nature’s bounty. Even better, drop by on a Sunday morning and join us as we water, weed, harvest, and enjoy each other’s company. Every Sunday morning throughout the growing season from 9:30 – 11:30.

temple life and the pursuit of HappinessWe recently concluded Temple’s fiscal year and at our June Annual Meeting celebrated the commitment of our many volunteers to Temple Life. (See information on page 7.)

As expressed in my report at the Annual Meeting: Thank you to all of our officers, trustees, donors, volunteers and members

for the continued support, warmth and help each of you give to the entire staff and our Temple. It is an honor and privilege to serve this – my – congregation. And a special thank you to our president, Dennis Kayes, for his support and assistance in every aspect of congregational life. All of us greatly appreci-ate his dedication and wisdom and that of all our trustees and members. Thanks to Abby, Faye, Stefanie and Barbara in our central office, to Charles, Slava and Chad, our maintenance staff, Adele, Karen, Marla and Viktoriya in our Early Childhood Community and education offices. And to Rabbi Kalfus, Kelly Onickel, Arlene Keller (Educator last year) and Eileen Brand, my fellow senior staff – todah rabah for all your support, guid-ance and assistance.

We recently began our new fiscal year and our Goals/Plans for 5777 include celebrating our 65th anniversary, addressing the opportunities and challenges of increasing membership and fund raising, increasing Temple engagement with ECC fami-lies and members of our congregation, a directory of Temple members, and for the office – continuing to increase efficien-cies – doing better with less and an improved customer relations member management system, website and other communication platforms.

This month we welcome direct from Israel our new Educator and Religious School Director, Abi Taylor-Abt, and her family. (See her article on page 3.) She is exciting, dynamic and will re-energize our Jewish learning at all levels.

Abi recently published a blog for The Times of Israel - “Tzedakah and the Pursuit of Happiness.” It includes thoughts that are highly relevant for our congregation as we continue our membership commitment renewal process. With her permis-sion, I include and paraphrase some of those thoughts.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill

Judaism teaches us to give 10% of our income to charity. The tradition of making donations and contributions to the com-munity and paying dues is built on this concept. When we give to others, it reminds us of how fortunate and lucky we are. We gain from compassion and empathy and the realization that we cannot and should not take things for granted.

A study on charitable giving demonstrated when people donate to a worthy cause, the mid-brain region lit up. This is the area of the brain responsible for our food and other cravings and pleasure rewards; showing the link between charitable giving and pleasure.

There are many other studies about giving to others and the effect it has on us. However, regardless of how much money people have, those who spent money on others report great-er happiness than those who spent money on themselves. There is much that is mystical about Judaism, but giving to others is not a complicated mitzvah to keep.

So, the answer to the age-old question: How can money buy us happiness? By giving it away.

Please include our Temple in your pursuit of happiness. Funding the building of our congregational community is necessary and we can only succeed with the financial and people power support of congregants. We appreciate that so many of you continue to support Temple Emanu-El and all of us are so very grateful for all that you do.

L’Shalom,

Tashlich Family Rosh Hashanah experience Monday, october 3 - rosh hashanah afternoon – 3:00 pm

for our families and friends – all ages (9 days to 99 years) Shiawassee park –Shiawassee St. and power Rd., farmington

What is Tashlich? One very meaningful practice associated with Rosh Hashanah is Tashlich, a ceremony in which Jews go to a body of water, such as a river, stream, or ocean, to cast away their sins by symbolically tossing bread into the water. This physical act inspires us to remember our actions, right our wrongs, and refocus ourselves for the New Year.

Adding to our experience of tossing bread and our sins into the stream in the park, amenities include playscape, shelter and restrooms; snacks and craft that afternoon.
