Tall  ship  ‘Eye  of  the  Wind’  setting  off  for  London  Following  a  “royal  tradition”  at  the  Tall  Ships  Race

The  southern  coast  of  England,  the  Canary  island  Teneriffa  and  the  British  Virgin  Islands  –  only  three  out  of  many  attractive  sailing  areas  alluring  with  their  maritime-‐scenic  beauty.  Those  can  be  visited  with  the  historic  brig  ‘Eye  of  the  Wind’  in  the  winter  of  2014/15.  Sail  the  waters  of  United  Kingdom  under  British  flag  As  civil  sail  training  vessel  certified  and  registered  with  homeport  Jersey  the  ‘Eye  of  the  Wind’  and  German  proprietor  is  sailing  under  British  colours.  After  visiting  several  British  overseas  territories  such  as  Anguilla,  Bermuda  and  Gibraltar  in  2013,  the  ‘Eye’  will  now  take  course  on  Cornwall,  London  and  the  British  Islands.  Taking  part  in  the  Falmouth  Royal  Greenwich  Tall  Ships  Race  is  basically  a  “royal  duty”:  around  35  years  ago  HRH  Charles,  Prince  of  Wales  himself  steered  the  proud  brig.  He  was  then  patron  of  the  scientific  expedition  “Operation  Drake”  while  the  ‘Eye  of  the  Wind’  was  the  flagship  and  base  camp.  After  successfully  returning  from  a  round  the  world  sailing  tour  in  December  1980  the  famous  London  Tower  Bridge  was  opened  for  the  ‘Eye’.   The   opening   of   both   parts   of   the   bridge   occurs   very   seldom   for   ceremonial   reasons   and   is   a   great  honor.

Welcome  on  board:  Open-‐Ship  event  in  Falmouth  and  Greenwich  As  well  in  Falmouth  as  in  Royal  Greenwich  you  can  visit  the  brig,  which  has  by  the  way  several  times  served  as  film  setting  for  Hollywood  productions.  During  daily  open-‐ship  events  the  crew  will  answer  all  questions  about  the  ship  and  its  history  to  visitors  and  enthusiasts.  Entry  is  free.  Open-‐Ship  in  Falmouth:    Thu.  August  28  until  Sun.  August  30,  2014:  daily  from  12:00  –  6:00pm.    The  mooring  area  will  be  announced  in  time.  Open-‐Ship  in  London  –  Royal  Greenwich:    Sat.  September  6  until  Mon.  September  8,  2014:  daily  from  10.00am  –  7.30pm.    Mooring  area:  Victoria  Deep  Water  Terminal  (close  to  „The  O2“).    Adventure  Trans-‐Atlantic  Following  the  Tall  Ship  Regatta   from  Falmouth  to  London-‐Greenwich  the   journey  continues  to   the  Canary  Islands,  further  west  across  the  Atlantic  and  to  the  Carribean  British  Virgin  Islands.  There  the  brig  will  take  week-‐long  discovery  cruises  through  the  beautiful  Antilles.  Interested  sailors  are  welcome  any  time  -‐    sailing  experience  in  not  necessary  and  active  participation  is  completely  voluntary.

The  ‘Eye  of  the  Wind‘  –  a  sailing  legend  with  Hollywood-‐past    For  103  years  already  the  seaworthy  brig  has  crossed  the  oceans.  Built  as  topsail  schooner  in  1911  the  ship  was  first  named  “Friedrich“  and  used  as  a  cargo  vessel.  After  passing  through  several  different  proprietors,  a  change  of  name,  beaching  and  a   fire   in   the  engine   room   the   ship’s  end   seemed   to  be   in  1970.   Instead  a  British  sailing  enthusiast  started  to  rig  the  ship  anew.  In  1976  the  two-‐master  with  its  new  name  ‘Eye  of  the  Wind’  was  ready  to  sail  the  seas.  After  rounding  the  globe  followed  the  expedition  “Operation  Drake”  under  patron  Prince  Charles.  The  majestic  appearance  of  the  tall  ship  also  caught  the  film  industry’s  attention  and  so  the  ‘Eye  of  the  Wind’  defied  storms,  ran  ashore,  caught  fire  and  sank  in  front  of  the  camera.  Hollywood-‐stars  like  Brooke  Shields  and  the  Oscar®-‐winners  Tommy  Lee  Jones  und  Jeff  Bridges  were  steering  the  ship.  In  “White  Squall”  (1996)  and  other  action  movies  the  sailing  Hollywood-‐diva  was  used  as  film  setting.

Short  profile  ‘Eye  of  the  Wind’  • Type:  Brigg  • Year  of  construction  1911  • Length  40,23  m,  Width  7,01  m  • 2  Masts;  750  m2  Sail  area  • 6  comfortable  cabins  for  12  guests  • Modern  safety  standards    • Parlor  with  board  library,  deck  parlor,  sun  deck  • Radio  (worldwide),  satellite  telephone,  Fax,  Internet

TR11 NEW BUSINESS Falmouth  Fish  and  Seafoods  Limited Charlotte Davey tells her story  We  have  taken  over  the  Arwenack  Fisheries  at  29  Arewenack  Street,  Falmouth.  The  shop  has  been  renamed  Falmouth  Fish  and  Seafoods  Limited.    My  Partner,  Nik  Stirzaker,  has  been  involved  in  fish  since  he  could  walk,  his  father  and

grandfather  are  fisherman  and  fishmongers,  he  has  been  a  fisherman  and  fishmonger  since  he  was  15  he  is  now  43,  he  is  from  Fleetwood  Lancashire  where  he  ran  Kendal  Fish  and  Seafoods  in  the  Lake  District.  I’m  a  fitness  instructor  and  personal  trainer  from  Cardiff,  South  Wales,  I  love  to  fish  and  Nik  loves  to  workout  in  the  gym;  the  mutual  interest  in  fishing  and  fitness  brought  us  together.  We  were  having  a  long  distance  relationship  travelling  weekends  to  spend  time  with  each  other  so  we  decided  to  move  South  to  be  together  and  found  the  fish  mongers  in  Falmouth  was  up  for  sale.  So  we   visited   Falmouth   and   fell   in   love  with   the  place.   Falmouth  has   so  much   to  offer  with   the  universities   and   festivals,   it's   a   busy   town   where   there   is   always   something   happening.  I   have  always   loved   Cornwall   and   have   fond   childhood   memories   of   coming   here,   my   granddad   was  Cornish  and  I  still  have  some  family  living  in  Cornwall,  so  I  suppose  it  was  in  my  blood  to  return.  I  would  bring  my  children  on  holiday  to  Cornwall  regularly  and  always  wanted  to  move  here.      I  wouldn't  move  North  and  there  wasn't  any  business  for  Nik  in  Cardiff  as  fish  mongers  are  a  dying  trade,  therefore,  Nik  and  I  decided  to  move  here  to  Falmouth  where   it   is  still   traditional  and  has  thriving  community  to  continue  to  run  a  well  established  fish  mongers.  Within  12  weeks  we  moved  here.  It  was  a  mission  to  move  from  Cardiff  and  Fleetwood  but  we  are  here  and  now  we  have  been  running  the  fish  mongers   in  Falmouth  for  a  couple  of  months,   it's  busy  and  we   love   it.    We  both  have  a  passion  about  fish  and  on  our  days  off  we  go  fishing  on  our  boat  anything  we  catch  off  the  shores  of  Cornwall  ends  up  on  our  fresh  fish  counter.  You  can't  get  fresher  than  that!    Falmouth  has  beautiful   coastline  with  golden  sandy  beaches  and  deep  blue  sea   it's   like   living  on  holiday,  we  wake  up  everyday  and  the  sun  is  shining,  it's  another  day  in  paradise!    Nik  is  a  commercial  fisherman  and  an  amazing  chef,  you  can  come  and  get  ideas  of  ways  to  cook  your  fish  and  shell  fish  and  even  pick  up  Nik's  own  recipe  cards.  Nik  has  lots  of  fresh  ideas  for  the  fish  mongers  keeping  it  traditional  but  with  a  twist,  we  are  selling  sushi,  crab  sandwiches,  prawn  salads,  homemade  fish  cakes,  fish  pie  mixes  and  a  massive  range  of  freshly  prepared  ready  meals.    All  our  fish  and  seafood  is  locally  sourced  and  freshly  caught,  our  crabs  are  picked  on  the  premises  daily.    I  have  two  girls  15  and  9  who  are  attending  the   local  schools,  we  have  moved   into  the  beautiful  village  of  Flushing.    I  teach  fitness  classes  and  personal  train  clients  in  the  Village  Club  at  Flushing,  Falmouth  Sports  Club  and  Core  Fitness,  in  between  fitness  and  children  I'm  in  the  fish  shop  helping  Nik.

The  BIG  Art  &  Storytelling  Tall  Ships  Project  has  been  given  a  celebrity  endorsement  at  the  Tower  of   London   at   a   special   event   held   by   Historic   Royal   Palaces   and   Kids   in  Museums.   The   event  brought  together  VIPs  from  all  over  the  UK  to  celebrate  putting  children  first   in  education,  art,  galleries  and  museums.

The  BIG  Art  &  Storytelling  Tall  Ships  Project  has  been  created  to  be  the  artistic  celebration  of  the  Falmouth   to   Royal  Greenwich   Tall   Ships   Regatta.   This   special   Arts   Council   England   and   FEAST   in  Cornwall  supported  project  seeks  to  engage  children  in  art  and  creative  writing,

Dea  Birkett  the  director  of  Kids   in   museums,   Damian  Dibben   the   internationally  best-‐selling   children’s  author,   John   Dyer   the  artist   in   residence   for   the  Tall   Ships  Regatta   and   the  BBC’s   Philip   Mould   OBE  came   together   at   this  special   event   to   support  the   BIG   Art   &   Storytelling  Tall  Ships  Project.

“The  BIG  Art  &  Storytelling  Tall   Ships   Project   is  charismatic.  John   Dyer’s  new   Tall   Ships   painting,

combined  with  professional  storytelling,  creates  an  irresistible  hub  for  creativity  to  flourish.”  Philip  Mould  OBE.

A  picture  is  telling  thousands  of  words  as  children  across  the  country  get  creative  interpreting  an  oil-‐based   celebration  of  one  of   this   year’s   great  world  Maritime  events   –   the  Falmouth   to  Royal  Greenwich  Tall  Ships  Regatta,  which  starts  in  Falmouth  28th  to  31st  August  before  racing  to  the  Isle  of  Wight  and  arriving  in  Greenwich  5th  to  9th  September.

Artist  in  residence  for  the  Regatta,  John  Dyer,  has  unveiled  his  fireworks  and  fiesta  painting,  based  on  memories  of  the  last  Falmouth  Tall  Ships  Festival  in  2008,  which,  with  the  help  of  story-‐tellers,  performers,  a  playwright  and  a  hip-‐hop  poet,   is  getting  youngsters  deeply  immersed   in  their  own  paint  and  salty  tales.

Sam  Groom,  Event  Manager,  Cornwall  Development  Company  explains,  “We  are  so  pleased  to  be  working  with  John  Dyer  again  and  we  are  grateful  for  his  support.    His  enthusiasm  and  creative  flair  have   added   enormously   to   the   event   in   previous   years,   attracting   great   interest   from   both   the  media  and  the  public.  To  be  able  to  use  John’s  Tall  Ships  painting  on  the  front  cover  of  the  official  programme  makes  it  a  wonderful  souvenir.”

Damian  Dibben,  creator  of  the  world  famous  “The  History  Keepers”  time-‐travel  series  is  one  of  the  professional  writers  for  the  BIG  Art  &  Storytelling  Tall  Ships  Project  says,  “This  is  a  brilliant,  original  competition.   John   Dyer’s  picture   is   bursting   with   character,   life   and   colour   –   I   can’t   wait  to   see  what  stories  it  inspires:  pictures,  stories,  poems,  anything.”

John   and   the   creative   team   are   working   closely   with   Festival   organisers   in   Falmouth   led   by  Cornwall  Development  Company’s  Visit  Cornwall  Team  and  with  Royal  Greenwich.  Dea  Birkett,  of  the   national   initiative   ‘Kids   in   Museums’,    is  helping   to   roll   out   the   BIG   Art   and   Storytelling  Tall  Ships  Project  across  the  country,  Dea  describes  John’s  painting  and  the  project  as,  “…entirely  entrancing,  engrossing.  It  opens  up  new  worlds.”

“This  whole  project   is  a  huge  creative  stimulus  for  children,”  says  the  project's  creative  producer  John  Frankland.  “The  writers  had  all   seen  the  painting   in  advance  –   James  Graham,   the  National  Theatre   playwright,   has   written   the   first  scene   of   a   play   and   asks   children   to   write   scene   two;  Maxwell   Golden   has  written   a   hip   hop   poem;   Damian   Dibben   and   Paul   Farmer   have   written  engrossing   stories,   it’s   all   about   firing   young   imaginations   to   express   themselves   in  pictures   and

words.”

John  Dyer’s  painting,  reflects  the  excitement  and  atmosphere   of   the   Regatta,   with   entertainment  and   activities   happening   throughout   the   town.  The  competition  closes  on  1st  August  with  the  24  top   prize   winners,   another   200   top  art   entries  and   a   selection   of   the   different   types   of  writing  going   on   display  at   the   National   Maritime  Museum   Cornwall   and   the   Greenwich   Heritage  Centre  during  the  Tall  Ships  Regatta.

“You   quite   often   hear   of   a   work   of   literature  inspiring  a  piece  of  art  but  not  so  often  the  other  way   around,”   says   John   Dyer.   “I   believe  everybody   is   born   highly   creative   and   artistic   –

it’s   what   helps   us   develop   and   learn   –   and  it’s   a   real   privilege   to   be   encouraging   artistic  talents,  working  with  children  across  the  country  in  this  special  and  magical  event.”

Children  and  families  can  find  out  more

online  at:    http://www.johndyergallery.co.uk/tallships

Including  a  short  film  explaining  the  project.  The  project  has  already  received  over  100  paintings  and  some  writing  from  children

across  the  country.

Now  if  you  are  under  16  it  is  your    chance  to  shine.

Fundraising  in  Action    Dementia  UK   (Cornwall)  would   like   to   give   a   big   thank  you   to  Mark  Buzza  who  entered  The  Three  Cities  Cycle  event  to  help  raise  money  to  support  Admiral  Nurses  in  Cornwall.  Admiral  Nurses  are  specialist  dementia  nurses  who   provide   vital   support   to   families   affected   by   the  condition.  The  Three  Cities  Cycle  covered  a  total  of  350  miles   in  4  days,   starting   from   London   Stratford   on   Wednesday  28th  May  and  finishing  in  Brussels  on  Saturday  31st  May.  Mark  was  riding  in  memory  of  his  grandmother  who  had

Dementia   and  was   cared   for   at   Treverne   in   Falmouth.   She   sadly   passed   away   in   February   and   this  made  the  bike  ride  even  more  important  to  Mark  'Thankfully  Gran  was  always  extremely  well  looked  after  but  it  made  us  very  aware  what  many  families  have  to  go  through  and  often  with  late  diagnosis  and  little  support’.  Mark  had  not  ridden  a  bike  in  five  years  and  had  never  cycled  more  than  15  miles  in  a  single  day,  so  it  was  a  big  challenge  to  get  prepared  in  the  6  months  from  December  2013.  He  has  written  a  blog  about  his  experience  at  www.buzzonabike.tumblr.com.  So   far   he   has   managed   to   raise   an   amazing   £2,000   and   is   hoping   to   reach   £2,500   by  1st  September  when  his  JustGiving  page  will  close  (www.justgiving.com/MrBuzza).  Another   local   lad,   Martyn   Houldsworth   is   running   180   miles   in   one   week   29th  August   -‐   6th  September  from  Dorset  to  Cornwall.    Check  out  his  website  www.bound4home.co.uk  to  see  how  you  can  support  him.  There   are   two   Admiral   Nurses,   helping   around   225   families   across   the   county   but   more   are  desperately  needed  which  is  why  we  are  continuing  to  raise  funds  -‐  please  help  if  you  can.

What is the difference between a service and a top-up:-

Service:- A service is a full service of your air conditioning system by trained technicians,

this includes checking pressure in system, assessing for leaks before adding fresh gas,

removing the air con gas, cleaning of air con system internally, adding the new gas with a

ultraviolet UV dye, a cleanse of the evaporator and testing operation of system. We

offering a complete air-conditioning service from only £69 (which will include, free, a

25-point safety check).

Top-up/Recharge:- Is literally all you get basic top up of gas £49

If A Air-Con systems not fully serviced it will be less effective and have to work harder

putting more strain on the engine and using more fuel. If your Air-Con system has not

been recharged in 2 years it will dramatically reduce efficiency.

During the hotter summer months motorists use the Air-Con system more; however your

system is also useful in winter. Air-Con systems create dry warm air rather than the normal

humid air from outside and this de-mists your car windscreen more quickly.

Sometimes when Your A/C system stops working, there is a leak in the A/C system, our

Renault technicians are trained to check for leaks in system. Should a leak be identified we

would contact the customer to see if they would like us to investigate further rather than

just topping up gas.

To keep your Air-Con system fully serviced all year, call Millers Garages Falmouth on
