FASA August 11th Meeting: The Art Buffet The August FASA meeting will start off with a tasty sampling of member expertise! The following FASA members have volunteered to share their “recipes” for artistic and creative success. Come prepared with an appetite for tasty new techniques, substantial entrees of excellence and sweet samplings of new materials and eco-attitude.

So everyone gets a taste of every bit of delicious information and plenty of eye candy, too! Some of the artists (as well as some other members) have donated door prizes for this special occasion, so put on your luck and bring your appetite to the meeting.

FASA September 8th Meeting Program and workshop presenter: Barb Forrister, internationally known fiber artist, will present a program about her work and process, followed by a workshop, at the September meeting of Fiber Artists of San Antonio. Barbʼs work focuses on surface design and 3 dimensional soft sculpting. She is a member of Texas Federation of Fiber Artists, Studio Art Quilts Association and the International Quilt Association. Currently residing in Austin, her true love is creating nature and pictorial scenes in a 3 dimensional manner. As an avid environmentalist and recycler, Barb gets her inspiration from observing nature and employing unusual and “upcycled” materials to convey textural surfaces. Many of these materials include heat distressed plastics, hand dyed, inked or painted textiles, fibers, beads and trinkets. Barb also supports and contributes to many causes by donating her time and work to organizations such as The Alzheimerʼs Art Quilt Initiative, American Cancer Society and the National Wildlife Federation. Her work has also been published in SAQA Portfolios 16-18, Dinner at Eight Artists Presents Beneath The Surface and The Space Between, Texas Artist Portrait Projects, In The Spotlight Barb Forrister (Quilting Arts April/May 2011 edition), In Stitches Emag (VolumeV), and Lone Stars III: A Legacy of Texas Quilts 1986-2011. WORKSHOP, 12:30-5:30 pm Monday, September 8, 2014 Three Dimensional Fabric Flowers You’ll learn to make 3-D poppies in this five-hour workshop, 12:30 - 5:30 pm at the Church Hall after the regular FASA meeting. The poppies consist of three tiers of petals with the outer layer made of fabric and the inner two layers composed of painted and stitched lutradur. The stamens consist of beads on floral wire. These can be added to quilts, used on garments, or as decorative art work on their own. Barb will provide painted lutradur, floral wire, beads and Mistyfuse as a kit for an additional fee of $15. Students need to bring fabric (1/2 yard for petals), 1/2 yard of batting, and a sewing machine with free motion capability, darning foot and BSK (basic sewing kit), thread, scissors and extension cord. Optional wire cutters and needle nose pliers. Minimum of six, maximum of 12-15 students. Class fee $60 per person. Kit fee* would be an additional $15 *Students can bring their own painted lutradur, floral wire, beads and Mistyfuse, but indicate so on the registration form.

FASA Community Service -- Food Pantry Submitted by Peggy McCaskill Foerster A jar of peanut butter. A tube of toothpaste. A few items added to our grocery cart. One dollar, or several ones. A check made out to AHCC (note on the memo line: “Food Bank”). These gifts are appreciated and well-stewarded by the volunteers at the church where we meet. In a recent article in a local paper, both SA Food Bank and AH Christian Church were featured. FASA meets once a month at AHHC, but the Food Pantry opens its doors once every week to the hungry in our community. The recipients are screened as to whether or not they meet certain financial requirements before being approved to receive aid. And resources are limited. Pantry Director Sara Warren knows exactly how much she can give out each week, and once that limit is distributed, the door is locked and the closed sign goes up. On a recent Tuesday, the Pantry was open 2 hours and seven minutes, having served 24 families. Having given out its weekly allotment, it would be another seven days before that door would open again to the hungry, and they would be waiting. Thanks for every donation you give. I want you to know that it is appreciated, and I personally am grateful that we support this need. Bless you all.

Miki Rodriquez and Georgia Zwartjes are in the All School Exhibition 2014 at Southwest School of Art. The show will run from July 19 through August 31. There are 3 simultaneous exhibits in the galleries: Full Time Faculty, Certificate Students and Teen Studio Intensive Program. They are very definitely worth seeing.

 Mary Ann Johnson will be a presenter at FASAʼs Art Buffet, August 11: "Shibori" comes from the Japanese word SHIBORU meaning to wring, press or squeeze. It refers to a method of dyeing that uses physical resists through manipulation of cloth to form a pattern. It involves twisting, tying, crumpling, stitching, clamping, and folding fabric in such a manner that a two dimensional piece becomes a three dimensional form. This 3-D shape is dyed. Sometimes the fabric is dyed in one color, released, shaped again and redyed. When the fabric is released the dye forms distinctive crinkled textures and patterns. Hence Yoshiko Wada's descriptive "Memory on Cloth". Garment on the left was created by Mary Ann Johnson.

Minutes FASA General Meeting Meeting was called to order at 10:05AM by Phyllis Jordan on July 13, 2014.

We had five guests present; Joy Duffy who used to sew and wants to begin again, Ann Bunn likes to sew, Sue Otto, Gretchen Hill, and Kathryn Fitting (Sue Corbettʼs daughter) who all like spinning and weaving. Program – Our guest speaker this month was Casey Galloway, Southwest School of Arts, who gave us an interesting slide presentation of “Her Work and Passion.” Casey told us her earliest interest in fiber began at age 6 with a love of doilies. As a teen-ager, she began designing and sewing garments but later discovered that weaving was her real love. Casey gave us a quick history of weaving and the development of various types of looms. Most cloth today is made on large commercial machines. In Caseyʼs opinion, this takes the creativity and art design out of the process. The individual hand weaver who still works with “primitive” or small looms does the most creative work. To prove her point, she showed us a number of items she has created. She started with scarves, moved up to shawls, and now does three dimensional sculptures using both natural and man-made materials. Her dream is to ultimately develop a plant and dye garden featuring Texas plants for her dyes. Caseyʼs latest business venture and a first step toward her dye garden is Wool Tree Yarn which features naturally died yarns. After Caseyʼs presentation, there was a drawing for a woven scarf donated by Sue Corbett and won by Kitty Janniga. Business Meeting The minutes of last monthʼs meeting were published in the July Newsletter. There were two corrections. Next yearʼs garden show dates should read April 17 and 18. Membership was shown at 150 which is last yearʼs number. As of the June meeting, our renewal membership was 72. Programs - Susie Monday was not available for a report but Phyllis Jordan did tell us that next monthʼs program will be An Artistʼs Buffet. Several FASA members will display their work, describe how they create their work, and answer any questions.

40th Annual Juried Show – Post cards promoting the show are now ready for distribution. The committee has contacted approximately 150 artists and fiber artist groups to solicit entries. Since entries must be submitted through the internet media, if any of our members are not computer oriented and need help with their entry, Diana Kellerman will be available for this purpose after the October 13th meeting. To get our creative juices flowing, Vicki Siptak showed us an a flowing overjacket she had made… and if she had not mentioned it… no one would ever have known this garment started out as a housecoat purchased from a local thrift store for $3. Dian Lamb also showed two dresses she had designed featuring Dali and Matisse themes. Texas Federation of Fiber Artists – Leila Reynolds reported that the Federation is crumbling for lack of interest and will ultimately be dissolved. Our Board still has to vote on the issue but it does not look promising for continuation. Community Outreach – If anyone is donating food or cash to the church, be sure to record it on the sheet at the sign-in table. Peggy Foerster is preparing an article for the Newsletter stressing the importance of the churchʼs food distribution program. Education - Jean Peffers highly recommended the ongoing Matisse Show. She said to go to the third floor where the Bank of America has two Matisse books on display. Both are well worth reviewing. Membership – Sue Corbett reminded everyone who had not yet renewed their membership to please do so. If they do not, their Newsletter will be discontinued. As of the July meeting, 82 members had renewed. Announcements Six members attended the satellite meeting so it will be continued next month. This meeting is basically a show and tell for members who work and cannot attend regular meetings.

• Leila Reynolds said she was willing to hold classes to introduce participants to different techniques. This is a good way to see if you are really interested in a particular media before you invest money in equipment and supplies. The class charge would be $75 per person to include all needed supplies.

• The New Braunfels quilt show is July 25 through 27. There is an excellent quilt class being taught by Nancy Mahoney being offered this year.

If you don't have a backyard lay on sidewalk, patio or lanai. After you finish, it is a great product for cleaning. So if you have been playing and experimenting all day you can put some in a bucket and tell your family you have been cleaning all day. Be Warned: It Is So Much Fun!!

Meet FASA’s Board Members

Silvia Sarinana, co-Chair of Programs, is originally from Mexico City. She came to San Antonio to study art as an adult in her 30ʼs, obtaining a BA from Incarnate Work and an MAE from Texas Tech. Silvia has been an educator for the past 32 years, focusing on art education for children for the past 17 years. In fact, she developed an entire program for art at St. Lukeʼs. Ask her about fund-raising efforts which resulted in money to purchase 21 sewing machines for the children. Silvia has worked with or taught the following types of art: oil painting, ceramics, collage, print-making, quilting, weaving, sewing, sculpture. She believes art is a vital part of oneʼs education, and should begin at an early age because art engages the brain in different ways, building problem-solving skills.

Robin Early, Satellite Rep: “My professional background includes a 10 year career with Clinique as Account Executive and Education Manager. I left the corporate world over 12 years ago to pursue acting and travel. Through my travels in Bali, Tahiti, Mexico, Guatemala, and Morocco, I became fascinated with and began collecting textiles. Then I took Jane Dunnewald’s 5 day intensive over 7 years ago, and really became fascinated with making my own surface designs. I have continued to study with Susie Monday and others. I enjoy the fashion aspect of fiber art the most, and enjoy selling my creations in a few shows annually and galleries. Sue Corbett, Membership: is a weaver, who began her creative journey in the third grade, when she learned to crochet and sew. She learned to knit in college where she met her husband. In 1972, they moved from Norman, Ok. to London, England, where they spent 9 years. As a homemaker, Sue had done lots of crafts, including macrame. While in London Sue saw a weaving demonstration at Selfridges. You could say that was the spark that started her on her path to weaving beautiful garments that has been her business for over 20 years. Sue began weaving wallhangings, then shawls and scarves. While at a show in Denver, she noticed that clothing was a hot seller, so she started making sweaters out of her handwoven cloth and used crochet to fashion waistbands. Sue uses no synthetic f ibers in her weaving, only wool, mohair, alpaca, rayon, cotton, silk, l inen, soy, and bamboo.

Call for Entries 2014 Annual Exhibition

November 21, 2014 SAY Sí Gallery

 The  Fiber  Artists  of  San  Antonio  (FASA)  are  pleased  to  announce  a  call  for  entries  for  the  2014  Annual  Exhibition.    Part  of  our  mission  is  to  promote  and  advance  fiber  art  through  the  education  of  members  and  the  public.  This  is  an  opportunity  for  fiber  artists  to  exhibit  their  work  and  for  the  community  to  gain  a  greater  appreciation  for  fiber  art.   Eligibility  

• Submissions  must  have  been  completed  in  the  past  2  years,  since  October  2012.  • Entries  should  be  of  original  design  and  execution  with  a  major  focus  on  fiber  or  fiber  techniques.  • Collaborations  are  eligible.    Artwork  sale  reimbursement  will  be  made  to  only  one  artist.    Collaborating  artists  must  make  

sales  split  arrangements  between  each  other  prior  to  artwork  submittal.    • FASA  members  and  fiber  artists  residing  in  the  state  of  Texas  are  eligible  to  enter.  (for  show  applications  and  membership

Requirements and Entry Format

• All  entries  will  be  juried  by  digital  photograph.  Each  entry  MUST  have  two  JPEG  (.jpeg)  images,  one  full  shot  and  one  detail  shot.  Each  entry  must  be  labeled  with  the  title  of  the  work  and  the  dimension  of  the  work.  Each  entry  must  be  at  least  300  dpi  and  no  larger  than  7"  in  any  direction.  

• Submitted  digital  images  may  be  used  for  publicity  and  exhibit  promotion  by  FASA  or  the  SAY  Sí  Gallery  unless  permission  is  denied  in  a  written  statement  submitted  to  FASA  at  the  time  of  entry  submission.  

• Artist  commission  is  50%.  Please  keep  this  in  mind  as  you  prepare  your  entry  forms.    No  changes  to  the  price  will  be  allowed  after  submission.      

• All   selected   entries   must   remain   hanging   for   the   entire   duration   of   the   show,   Friday   November   21   through   Tuesday  December  16,  2014.  

• All  entries  must  be  ready  for  installation,  with  an  appropriate  hanging  rod  or  device.  • Each  accepted  piece  should  be  labeled  with  the  name  of  the  artist  and  title  of  the  piece  on  the  back.    

Pieces  that  do  not  meet  these  requirements  will  not  be  considered  for  display.   Entries and Submission Fee

The Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi, the discovery of beauty in things that are imperfect, impermanent, and/or incomplete, strongly influences her work. Ms. Schneider has an extensive background in surface design and teaching, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her artwork is in both private and public collections. This year Ms. Schneider will exhibiting at the Wayne Art Center, Nature in Craft Invitational, Wayne, PA; SAQA Regional Exhibit, Charles, IL, Anderson Arts Center, Kenosha, WI; San Jose Museum of Textiles, Interpretations, Evanston, IL;

and, Seasonal Palette, Festival Internacional de Patchwork e Arts Afins, Curitiba, Brazil.
