Phoenix DeVentures founder, Jeff Christian, has been in the Medical Device field for 35

years. Initially operating out of Jeff’s garage, Phoenix DeVentures has been servicing

medtech startups for over 15 years, growing to include 60 employees in 40,000 square feet

of development and manufacturing space. In that time Phoenix has seen a broad spectrum

of startup dynamics, with the pendulum swinging from VC’s ‘throwing’ money at some

sectors to the purse strings becoming cinched tight. Phoenix has seen the effect of this

broad swing in its clientele, and has grown year over year for 15 years in spite of the

financial trauma to this industry sector.

Topic Description

Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (Btk) plays a critical role in B cell maturation and survival in

addition to regulating myeloid cell inflammatory cytokine production, making it an

attractive target for the treatment of immunological disorders such as rheumatoid

arthritis (RA) and lupus, as well as B-cell malignancies. Mice deficient in BTK enzyme

activity (X-linked immune defect, xid) have marked depletion of B cell populations

and are resistant to developing collagen-induced arthritis and lupus. Male patients

with BTK mutations have a condition known as X-linked agammaglobulinemia,

characterized by a severe block in B cell development and diminished serum

immunoglobulin levels; however, when treated with intravenous immunoglobulins,

they are generally able to lead fairly normal lives which speaks to the potential safety

of the target when modulating Btk activity as a therapeutic intervention. To date,

Imbruvica® is the only BTK inhibitor to launch in oncology indications, while none

have yet been approved in immunology indications. Thus there have been significant

efforts from the pharmaceutical community with the goal of identifying Btk inhibitors

for clinical development in immunology.

Dr. Young will describe the work at Genentech to develop a series of highly potent,

selective, non-covalent Btk inhibitors that have proven to be efficacious in several

rodent models of RA and lupus. Additionally, compounds in this chemical series were

found to remain highly active against the C481S Btk mutant that has been identified

in patients that have relapsed on Imbruvica®. In this presentation, the SAR,

preclinical DMPK and toxicology investigations leading up to the discovery and

selection of the lead clinical candidate, GDC-0853 will be described. Additionally, the

initial results from Phase 1 clinical trials will be shared.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Wendy B. Young, Ph.D. is currently Vice President of Discovery Chemistry at

Genentech in South San Francisco, where she directs a large group of medicinal,

computational & analytical chemists. Her department has been highly successful at

discovering and moving clinical candidates into clinical trials for many therapeutic

indications including those in oncology, immunology, and neuroscience.

Prior to Genentech, Dr. Young was Senior Director of Medicinal Chemistry and led

discovery efforts at Celera Genomics for twelve years where she focused on the

discovery of protease and kinase inhibitors for a variety of clinical indications.

Wendy received her Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1993 and completed a

postdoctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 1995.

Wendy is listed as an inventor or author on over 70 patent and research publications

and has given presentations at many national and international meetings. Wendy was

recently elected as Vice Chair of the National ACS Medicinal Chemistry Division which

will culminate in her being Chair of the MEDI Division in 2017. Last year, Wendy was

recognized by the San Francisco Business Times as one of the San Francisco Bay

Area’s “Most Influential Business Women of 2015”.

Topic Description

In India, the telemedicine market is experiencing exponential growth – driven by the fact

that 80% of the doctors are in urban areas and 70% of the population is rural. A relaxed

regulatory regime, micropayment structures, widespread availability of cellular devices and

increased awareness in the population are leading to rapid proliferation. Leading hospitals

have already begun telemedicine efforts and 20+ telemedicine smartphone based players

are gearing up. We expect over a million telemedicine operators (para medical personnel) to

be operating by 2020.

Specifically, cardiovascular disease is at epidemic levels in India, with 1 in 4 adults at risk;

the average age of heart attacks is now around 40. iMedrix, a Silicon Valley Based startup

is entering the market with a lightweight, rugged, mobile ECG/EKG device for field screening

and triaging. iMedrix went from seed funding to post-trial revenue generation in less than 9

months. iMedrix devices are on a fast path to clinical workflow integration setting a

precedent for rapid trials and telemedicine subscription models. In a short period, 1000s of

readings have been taken and we anticipate that to grow to over a million later this year.

As we have traversed this path at rocket speed, we have had many valuable learnings. The

speakers will present an overview of the Indian telemedicine market and share their insights

and experiences.

Speaker Bios Srikanth Jadcherla is a well-known Low Power Guru, technologist, educator, entrepreneur, investor and green evangelist. He is on a mission to make education and healthcare accessible and affordable anywhere. Srikanth’s primary area of technical work is in low power chips and systems. He is a veteran of low power designs and pioneer of many energy efficiency techniques and principles. Jadcherla received an Intel Achievement Award, Intel’s highest honour, for his work on low power and is the author of 13 patents/applications. He was the founder of Archpro, where he created the theory of Voltage Aware Boolean analysis for low power ICs and systems. Archpro was acquired by Synopsys in 2007. His current area of research is on 3

rd generation low power designs, IOT protocols, IOT verification,

mobile big data, IOT medical access and smart grid energy control algorithms. He is a prolific speaker on wide ranging topics such as System/SOC verification, energy management, energy policy and educational reforms. Prof. Jadcherla holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from IIT-Madras in India, and a master’s degree in computer science and engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Bangalore, India. In 1992, he founded Russian-American Software, amongst the first US-

Russia collaborations in software. While serving as a vice president at Synopsys, Inc., and

CEO of Synopsys Armenia, Rich helped develop a number of programs to foster high tech

education worldwide, garnering honors such as guest Professor at the Chinese Academy of

Science, and Honorary Professor at the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technologies. With

Michael S. Malone and the President of Armenia, Rich established the Armenia’s Presidential

Award for Contribution to Humanity Through IT, bringing to Armenia Steve Wozniak, Craig

Barrett, and Federico Faggin.

Rich has presented at TEDx, and coauthored the book “STARMUS” with Neil Armstrong,

Buzz Aldrin, Alexi Leonov, Kip Thorne, Richard Stzostak, George Smoot, Steven Hawking,

Topic Description

Increasingly, medical devices have the capability to be connected over wired, wireless,

or other channels to larger systems of connected and interoperable medical devices and

information technologies. This creates new risks for such devices, including issues of

safe operation under remote or distributed controls, data security and piracy concerns

for protected health information, and interference with other devices. A number of

standards and guidance documents are under development, including a recently

released FDA guidance. This presentation will provide an overview of current and

upcoming standards and FDA activities in this area. It will also discuss what device

manufacturers need to do in order to prepare for compliance.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Geetha Rao, CEO of Springborne Life Sciences specializes in medical device risk

management and lean approaches to compliance. She is active on several standards

bodies and has previously helped author the ISO 13485 and ISO 14971 standards, as

well several recent standards and technical reports for connected medical devices. She

is a long-time member and contributor to ASQ and the Biomedical Division NCDG.

Topic Description

Building a biotech company is challenging for a multitude of reasons. Among the greatest

challenges is the difficulty financing a company though the long journey towards the

creation of new medicine. Research, particularly basic discovery research is often perceived

as a cost and burden which needs to minimized in order to marshal resources towards the

advancement of a lead clinical program. However, it can be argued that creating “the next

Genentech” will remain metaphor rather than reality without investment in research by new

biotechs. I will share our experiences and observations building a biotech anchored on a

model of ongoing and substantial investment in basic discovery research. Among our

surprising observations: rather than being a cost, research has funded the company!

Speaker Bio

Austin Gurney joined OncoMed Pharmaceuticals at its founding as Vice President of

Molecular and Cellular Biology. Prior to OncoMed, Dr. Gurney worked at Genentech where

his research contributed to the discovery of numerous growth factors and cytokines. He has

authored or co-authored more than 60 papers and is listed as an inventor on over 600

patents related to therapeutic applications in immunology and cancer. Dr. Gurney has two

decades of experience in biotechnology and in the development of novel therapeutics.

Dr. Gurney conducted his Ph.D. work at Case Western Reserve University. He completed

post doctoral studies with Dr. Bryan Williams at the Cleveland Clinic, and at Genentech with

Dr. David Goeddel.

the Medicare prescription drug program, Medicaid, health information technology, Big Data

access and methods, 340B, and reformed commercial markets. Prior to Merck, Jane was

Deputy Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation project at Johns Hopkins University

School of Public Health, conducting research and devising policy on care management and

financing for people with chronic conditions. Jane also held a series of high profile

government positions. This included work as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Legislation in

the US Department of Health and Human Services, responsible for legislative policy for all

health-related areas, including Medicare, Medicaid, and prescription drug pricing. Recently

Dr. Isaac Ciechanover is a physician, investor and entrepreneur driven by a passion

candidates may need to be sponsored by the employer because they might not be US

citizens or permanent residents. What are the options for entrepreneurs starting up

businesses? How can a founder establish an immigration policy to attract and retain the best

and the brightest? What visa options are available and how best to navigate through US

immigration laws? Norman Plotkin and Atessa Chehrazi, partners at the immigration law

firm of Jackson & Hertogs, will explain how the most common visas such as H-1B, J-1, and

TN work and will discuss recent developments in immigration law including changes to the

Speaker Bios

Norman C. Plotkin

Norman became a partner in February 2002. Throughout his career, Norman has

been active in AILA. Previously, he served as the editor of the Gold Book, a resource

for practicing immigration law in California, and as co-editor of the Western Region

Directory for the Immigration Practitioner. He was also liaison for the Northern

California AILA Chapter to both the California Service Center and the U.S.

Department of Labor. In addition, he was a member of the national AILA/California

Service Center liaison committee and previously served on the national

AILA/Department of Labor liaison committee. He has also lectured at seminars and

conferences including national AILA Conferences, the BIO International Convention,

the BIO Human Resources Conference and the HR Star Conference. Norman has

received high marks in all legal directories, including a listing in the Best Lawyers in

America. He is fluent in Spanish.

Atessa Chehrazi

Atessa has been a partner at Jackson & Hertogs since April 2013 and an

associate/senior associate since July 2000. She was previously an associate at

Maggio & Kattar in Washington, D.C. from 1996 to 2000. She has held several

volunteer roles within the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) during

her career. For AILA’s Northern California Chapter, she has served as Chair, Vice-

Chair, Treasurer, U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) liaison, and

Customs & Border Protection (CBP) liaison. On a national level, Atessa served on

AILA’s USCIS Headquarters and Benefits, Administrative Appeals Office (AAO), and

Department of Labor (DOL) liaison committee. In addition, Atessa has served on

AILA’s Business Immigration Advocacy, Issues, and Due Process & Civil Liberties

committees, as well as several conference committees. She has served as a board

member of the Iranian American Bar Association Northern California chapter since

2009 and is incoming President of the chapter. She is a member of the Bar

Association of San Francisco, and the National Lawyers Guild. She has authored

several articles published in AILA Handbooks. Atessa has presented at national and

regional AILA conferences. Atessa has been highly reviewed in legal directories,

including selection as a Northern California “Super Lawyer” (2010-2012), and listing

Ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) is the new standard HPLC platform

delivering higher performance with small-particle columns used on low-dispersion systems

with pressure limits of 15,000 – 23,000 psi. This intermediate-level 1/2-day training

workshop will provide a critical overview the fundamental concepts, benefits, potential

issues, and best practices of UHPLC in pharmaceutical analysis of small molecule drugs and

recombinant biologics (monoclonal antibodies, mAbs)
