Who is the preliminary audience and secondary? The preliminary audience for The Woman in Black is the fans of the Harry Potter franchise as Daniel Radcliffe who is the main actor in the film is most well known for his portrayal of the character Harry Potter. The film was released quite soon after Harry Potter had finished so they wanted to create a film that would attract that audience to watch it because they wanted to see what Radcliffe is doing next which is why the certificate of the film is kept at 12 to allow the younger audience to watch it.

The secondary audience for the film is also a mixture as half of the audience is also Harry Potter as they would have grown up with the franchise when they were younger so they want to follow the actor throughout his career. The rest of the audience will be mainly mature as there is a book that the film is created from will have got a wide range of people interested into the film, there is also a play based on the book so it appeals to wide range of mature older audience that would like to see the film to contrast and compare them. Also because of the victorian gothic feel to the film which is shown through the settings of the Eel Marsh House which will attract its own type of audience for people that like this style of film.

How was The Woman in Black marketed? The Woman in Black started promoting the film through a teaser campaign which involved releasing a teaser trailer for the new film, a halloween competition which involved the audience winning certain prizes and Daniel Radcliffe producing a Youtube video asking the audience to send in ghost stories to win certain prizes again,he wanted to get strongly behind the film to help promote it as he wanted to break the Harry Potter role he was known for. By doing this it drawed in a younger audience as they wanted to draw in Harry Potter fans so they can see him in it. The main marketing campaign involved a poster release which had Daniel Radcliffe in center composition to show the audience who was acting in the film to try and appeal to wide range of audiences. They also placed them on buildings and on bus stands. They also produced adverts that will appear on different websites as a pop up advert, telling the audience when the film is going to be released in the cinema. Another item of marketing they did was a social media campaign, creating a Facebook page to reach their younger target audience, for the secondary target audience they produced press advertisement for newspapers and radio adverts. Radio adverts are a lot cheaper to produce than television adverts which is why with the distributors decided to use radio adverts with the budget they have. Daniel Radcliffe also did many interviews to promote the film not just in the UK but also in America and other countries alike as there was also a world premier to help promote the film as it was highly anticipated. I do believe the marketing material is appropriate as it appeals to both their secondary and preliminary target audience which makes them want to go and watch the film.

The Woman in Black budget and production The Woman in Black’s production value was around $15 million to be used to create the film and to promote it. The box office intake for the film was $128 million. I believe it did so well due to the promotion used behind the film as by having Daniel Radcliffe as the main actor it attracts two type of the audiences younger and older, hence why the film was only a 12. Another reason why it was so successful is because by having the competitions for the film it hocked the younger audience into watching and finding out about the film way before it was even meant to be released, this allowed the audience to grow at a rapid speed as the younger audience that took part in the competitions would then tell their friends and family saying what they have done to grow and promote the film further.
