Vorwort
Vorwort
Liebe Motorsport-Fans,
passieren lassen.
Viel Spaß beim Lesen wünscht

Preface
Preface
Dear motorsport fans,
For me the Audi R8 LMS is the world’s most elegant race car.
The Audi R8 is a design icon, an absolutely fascinating sports
car. I have been involved with the R8 project since 2004. To
this very day I still stroll through manufacturing and feel how
my heart races when I set my eyes on this unique sports car.
The R8 inherited all the genes required to pursue a successful
career in motorsport. For this reason I am delighted that
our Executive Board had the courage to give the ‘Audi Sport
customer racing’ project the green light, and to establish
customer racing at Audi as the third element alongside the
factory programs at Le Mans and in the DTM.
Obviously there was one or the other stumbling block and
everything did not run smoothly from the word go. However,
the business sector customer racing at quattro GmbH under
the management of Romolo Liebchen has done a fabulous
job. More than 100 race wins in only three years, numerous
championship titles and winning the endurance classics like
the 24h Nürburgring, 24h Spa, 12h Bathurst and 6h Zhuhai
and also the street race in Macau speak for themselves.
This book is a small thank you to everybody who helped to
build up customer racing at Audi and to develop the R8 LMS.
This includes the ever growing number of customer teams
relying on the Audi R8 LMS and our support. As of now this
book should be published at the end of every year and take
a look back over the races contested by our customers.
I hope you enjoy reading it
Werner Frowein

AUDI AG is involved in motorsport for over
30 years – and this with outstanding success.
Be it World Rally Championship, Pikes Peak,
Trans-Am, IMSA-GTO, DTM, Super Touring Cars or Le Mans:
wherever Audi Sport competes at factory level since 1981
the programs always conclude with significant victories and
championship titles.
During the first three decades there are also repeated
activities at importer level as former factory cars filter down
in to privateer hands. This is indeed the case in rallying
during the 1980s with the legendary original quattro and
continues into the 1990s with the Super Touring Cars.
National activities such as development of an Audi A4 STCC
and the RS 4 and RS 6 models for the North American SPEED
GT World Challenge also gain Audi Sport support. After the
third Audi R8 victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2002,
it is importer teams that initially fly the flag for Audi in
sport prototypes over the next three years, before the brand
returns with a factory program to Le Mans in 2006 with the
revolutionary diesel powered R10 TDI sports prototype.
In all the years, however, there is not a logically structured
customer racing program conceived as a profit center at Audi
Sport. This changes abruptly in September 2006 when the
brand’s first mid-engine sports car, which bears the name and
genes of the Le Mans winner, is unveiled at the Paris Motor
Show. “Everybody was in total agreement that we must
do motorsport with the R8,” remembers Werner Frowein,
Managing Director of quattro GmbH, which is trusted with
manufacture, sales and marketing of the production R8.
