Atlanta HOGWASH May 2013 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE ATLANTA CHAPTER, INC., CHAPTER NUMBER 0788 DIRECTOR’S CORNER: Spring is here and for those that ride a Harley-Davidson motorcycle this is a special time of year. We can now begin to shed the leather jackets and chaps and enjoy the fantastic weather that we have in our corner of the south. The Atlanta Chapter and Harley-Davidson of Atlanta have some great rides and events coming up for the spring and summer that you won’t want to miss. In the immediate horizon is the Peace, Love and Harleys event coming up on May 18th. I think this was one of the most enjoyable events we had at the dealership last year. For this year the Atlanta Chapter will be hosting a pancake breakfast with the proceeds going to the Atlanta Chapter. We will need volunteers to help with the breakfast and the event (more information to follow). Speaking of volunteers, I am awed by the volunteer participation we have and this is what I believe makes the Atlanta Chapter top-notch. While our goal is to “Ride and Have Fun” our members are quick and eager to volunteer and this is much appreciated by the Chapter and the dealership. Volunteering is the best way I know to get involved in the Chapter and form some great friendships. In April several of our officers, Chuck Fuller (Assistant Director), Suzanne Rapp (Activities Officer), Matt Langley (Head Road Captain) and Amanda Langley (LOH- Ladies of Harley Officer) attended HOT (Harley Officers Training) in Raleigh, NC. HOT is a great opportunity to hone the skills of our chapter leadership through attending the varied classed provided by Harley-Davidson Motor Company and having the opportunity to meet and learn from other riders from all over the world. I appreciate their commitment in the time and expense of attending this training opportunity. Every month we are gaining new members. People who have a passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles discover the H.O.G. Chapter and many are eager to find a place in the chapter. Many of these have told me that they have been made to feel very welcome and have been quickly “included” in the chapter events and social functions. This says a great deal about the quality of our membership. There are a lot of rides and activities coming up. I’m looking forward to leaving the leather jacket at home and riding in a T-shirt. I hope to see you at the next event. Mark Redmon / Director “Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.” Douglas MacArthur TREASURER’S ARTICLE Congratulations to Suzanne Rapp whose name was drawn for the April Attendance Jackpot. Suzanne was at the meeting to claim the $110. We will add $50 back to the Jackpot and start over for the next chapter meeting. Remember you must be at the meeting and a member in “Good Standing,” a current member of national H.O.G. and Atlanta Chapter. If the member whose name is drawn is not at the meeting, we will add $10 and try again next meeting. Please have your National H.O.G. card with you at the meeting. Hope to see everyone there. Four pigs: Lots of curves, some with “decreasing radius” turns and/or cover a major distance requiring a good deal of technical skill and stamina. Major traffic such as I75 can be part of this rating. Five pigs: Most difficult category due to the severity and number of curves combined with a long ride. The Southern Highroads Trail, Suches, and Gatlinburg would fall into this category.

DEALERSHIP REWARD TO ROAD CAPTAIN Mark Cothern was rewarded for his work as a Road Captain with a FREE Service from the dealership. The dealership drew Mark’s name from all the Road Captains who led a ride during the first quarter of the year. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR’S CORNER: 2013 is unfolding into a memorable year for the Atlanta Chapter H.O.G.! We have a nicely stocked calendar of Dealer and Chapter events not to mention lots of RIDES! Be sure to keep an eye on the Hogwash, Atlanta HOG website, email blast, and Atlanta HOG Facebook page. If you are having trouble accessing any of these sites please contact me or any of the chapter officers to help you. With all we have going on you should be able to find something right for you. If not, we are as always open for suggestions so bring 'em on! I was fortunate to attend National HOG Officer Training (HOT) in April, along with 3 other officers from our chapter. This is a great event to exchange ideas and interact with HOG chapters from across the United States. I'm excited that we can use some of the things we learned to make our chapter even better! Ride on! Chuck (Chaos) Fuller SAFETY CORNER: HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES – PREVENTION The following tips may help prevent a heat-related illness.

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after you are active. This is very important when it's hot out and when you are physically active. Fluids such as rehydration drinks, juices, or water help replace lost fluids, especially if you sweat a lot.

o Drink rehydration drinks, which are absorbed as quickly as water but also replace sugar, sodium, and other nutrients. Eat fruits and vegetables to replace nutrients.

o Check your urine. Urine should be clear to pale yellow, and there should be a large amount if you are drinking adequately. You should urinate every 2 to 4 hours during an activity when you are staying properly hydrated. If your urine output decreases, drink more fluids.

Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing in hot weather, so your skin can cool through evaporation.

Stay cool as much as possible. Take frequent breaks in the shade, by a fan, or in air-conditioning. Cool your skin by spraying water over your body.

If you have to stand for any length of time in a hot environment, flex your leg muscles often while standing. This prevents blood from pooling in your lower legs, which can lead to fainting.

Do not drink caffeine or alcohol. They increase blood flow to the skin and increase your risk of dehydration.

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion: The most common signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include confusion, dark-colored urine (which indicates dehydration), dizziness, fainting, fatigue, headache, muscle cramps, nausea, pale skin, profuse sweating, and rapid heartbeat Treatment for Heat Exhaustion: If you or anyone else has symptoms of heat exhaustion, it's essential to immediately get out of the heat and rest, preferably in an air-conditioned environment. If you can't get inside, try to find the nearest cool and shady place. Other recommended strategies include Drink plenty of

non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic beverages; Remove any tight or unnecessary clothing; Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath; Apply other active cooling measures such as fans or ice towels. If such measures fail to provide relief within 30 minutes, contact a doctor because untreated heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke. Symptoms of Heat Stroke: The hallmark symptom of heat stroke is a core body temperature above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. But fainting may be the first sign. Other symptoms may include Throbbing headache, Dizziness and light-headedness, Lack of sweating despite the heat, Red, hot, and dry skin, Muscle weakness or cramps, Nausea and vomiting, Rapid heartbeat, which may be either strong or weak, Rapid, shallow breathing, Behavioral changes such as confusion, disorientation, or staggering, Seizures, Unconsciousness. First Aid for Heat Stroke: If you suspect that someone has a heat stroke, immediately call 911 or transport the person to a hospital. Any delay seeking medical help can be fatal. While waiting for the paramedics to arrive, initiate first aid. Move the person to an air-conditioned environment -- or at least a cool, shady area -- and remove any unnecessary clothing. If possible, take the person's core body temperature and initiate first aid to cool it to 101 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit. If no thermometers are available, don't hesitate to initiate first aid. You may also try these cooling strategies Fan air over the patient while wetting his or her skin with water from a sponge or garden hose; Apply ice packs to the patient's armpits, groin, neck, and back. Because these areas are rich with blood vessels close to the skin, cooling them may reduce body temperature; immerse the patient in a shower or tub of cool water, or an ice bath. YESTERDAY AND TODAY: MAY 1986 IRON BUTT RIDE -Kevin Trask and Eddie George have put together a little ride for Memorial Day Weekend. They plan to leave McDonald’s at 1-75 North and Windy Hill at 7:00am Friday, May 22, and return to Atlanta sometime Monday, May 25. The approximate mileage will be 2000 miles. What? If you wcu1d like to go, meet them at 6:00am for breakfast and a pre-ride meeting and be ready to RIDE RIDE RIDE. Call Kevin or Eddie if you would like to participate or need more information. HANDLEBAR HEIGHT – HOW HIGH IS TOO HIGH?

Handlebar height is regulated by O.C.G.A. §40-6-314(b), which states: No person shall operate any motorcycle with handlebars more than 15 inches in height

above that portion of the seat occupied by the operator… Some confusion may exist which could lead to questions of where to begin measuring the “portion of the seat occupied by the operator.” Because many seats are curved, would a proper measurement begin at the lowest point, the highest point, or the average of the two on the seat where the operator sits? Furthermore, would the handlebar height be measured by the end of the grip, the highest point on the bars (regardless of hand or grip position), or an average of the two? More specific measurement guidelines are not

outlined in the statute, nor has there been a Georgia case where a court has interpreted the measuring standards. Some factory-original modern production motorcycles may actually violate Georgia’s handlebar height law. Chuck Watwood, LawBike.com MEMBER PROFILE: JESSE HARRIS

I remember the first time I ever rode a motorcycle was when I was 11 years old. It was on the back of my Daddy’s Harley. Been in love with motorcycles ever since. From Allstates, Cushmans, Yamahas, Hondas to Harleys. Today I ride a 09 Ultra and love it. We have a great bunch of members in our chapter and it makes my responsibilities easy.

Thank you all. You get out of it what you put in it!! STATE HIGHWAY MAP PHOTO CONTEST The State Transportation Board of Georgia invites you to participate in the State Highway Map Photo Contest. FALL LEAF RUN VII Fall Leaf Run VII is not that far down the calendar folks. If you think a room was hard to find and not a wallet buster at the Super Bowl, just try getting a cot in the mountains in peak leaf color season! (Darn windshield tourists) Well – problem solved. I spent two days on the phone to secure rooms at very reasonable rates for the ‘other’ HOG event of the year. (Editorial license) The agreed costs are either a discount due the number of rooms or in one case; we have the reduced price plus an additional senior discount for everyone regardless of age. (I told her we were a bunch of old fogies who were laid back and hardly ever killed anyone - anymore) I would strongly suggest that you jump on the frigate before she sails. The earlier you reserve, the more flexible your choices. And remember, when the blocked rooms are gone – they be gone! The DEADLINE to get a room is July 10th!!! After that the block will be removed and you may be at the KOA in a pup tent. Always ask for the Great South HOG blocked room unless you want to pay a premium price.
