Frequently Asked Questions About The NSS(continued from previous issue)
Q: What is a Qualified Annuity?A: A qualified annuity is funded withpre-tax dollars. An annuity which isfunded with pre-tax dollars means thatthe contribution may be taken as a taxdeduction on your tax return. Whenfunds are withdrawn, the full amount of the withdrawal is normally taxable(exceptions to this rule are Roth IRAs). Examples of qualified annuities are: Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, Keoghs, and SEPs.
Q: What is a Non-Qualified Annuity?A: A non-qualified annuity is fundedwith after-tax dollars. An annuity whichis funded with after-tax dollars meansthat the contribution may not be takenas a tax deduction on your tax return. When funds are withdrawn, only the interest portion of the withdrawal is taxable. The IRS requires that all inter-est earned must be withdrawn prior towithdrawing the principal deposits.
Q: Will I have a penalty when I with-draw funds from my NSS annuity?A: NSS annuities allow for a withdrawalof up to 10% of your total accountvalue per contract each year without apenalty. (Withdrawals prior to age 59may be subject to IRS early distributionpenalties.) Please review your specificcontract for additional information onapplicable penalties.

Financial Quiz Here is a financial quiz that we made
up. We tried to keep it simple. The an-swers are either true/false. The topicscovered range from all aspects of finan-cial planning. See how well you do –good luck.
1. It is always better to buy individualstocks than a mutual fund.2. A savings account with a $1,000 in it and earning 1% will have morethan $1,050 after five years.3. Having a will is the most importantpiece of your estate plan.4. If you don’t owe any taxes, there isno penalty for filing your federal returnafter April 15th.5. When building your financial plan, the best step is to set up a savings account first.6. A 25% loss on your stock portfolioone year, followed by a 25% rise thenext year would make your accountbalance back to the same level.7. A Roth IRA is always better than atraditional IRA. 8. Without a complete analysis, a goodrule of thumb for how much life insur-ance you should have is ten times yourannual income.9. If you divorce after 9 years, you still collect on your spouse’s Social Security earnings.10. You bought your house in 2010for $100,000 and sold it in 2016 for$500,000. You owe $400,000 in capi-tal gains taxes.
Bonus: Now since the fed is raising interest rates the value of bonds goesup too.
How To Start The New YearHappy New Year and welcome to the first day of the restof your life. You probably made some new year’s resolu-tions and one of them was to save more money. Well, earning more money is a lot like saving more money. Ineither case there is an estimated $1.2 trillion (with a T)dollars in bank checking, savings and money market ac-counts (MMA). That number works out to be around$5,700 per person (over age 18). Here is a list of some of
the current rates that different banks have to offer:

Plus our annuity accounts have the following features: These plans have a 2.0%minimum lifetime guarantee (on the P 5). They are tax-deferred until money iswithdrawn. Interest does come out first and there is an early withdrawal penaltyprior to age 59½. Annuities may be used to provide lifetime income options, NSSwill waive the penalty in the event of a nursing home confinement or death. Fundscan pass probate free through the designated beneficiary. And your money is pro-tected by reserves which are required by law.So what does all this mean? If you have money sitting somewhere and want to
earn more interest isn’t it time you took control of your financial future? We can’tcall you – you have to call us. Dial 724-731-0094 for more information or callyour local NSS representative or Joe Elliott in the Home office.

“Fašiangy” (fa-sheng-ee) -- CarnivalThe term Shrovetide is the period that lasts
from the feast of the 3 Kings until Ash Wednes-day, although much of the celebrations are concentrated into the last few days called“Fašiangy” or “Blaznive Dni” crazy days! “Fašiangy” is believed to have originated from
the German word for carnival, “Fassnacht” whichcomes from the ancient word for “running aroundcrazily”. The last three days before Lent are filledwith entertainment, over-drinking, and over-eating. A carnival atmosphere persistswith masqueraded performers singing and going from house to house making aparody to official ceremonies like weddings, or court proceedings. And many timesthe young men dressed themselves as goats, bears, gypsy women or old women.
naszvolen.skWomen also participated in the festivities. They would visit several homes, usu-
ally where some priadky (spinning) wastaking place. There they would drink"na vysoky lan " i.e., literally, to tall flax.In order to ensure that there was plentyof long flax, the women would pull thehair of the lady whose was longest. Thenthey would jump up from their benchesand do a special dance.
It may seem that Fašiangy was atime of fun and foolishness, but itserved a purpose as village people and
townsfolk could have fun and enjoy themselves before Lent. These traditions con-tinue in some villages to this day, however, in the cities it is reduced to frying šišky(donuts) and going to organized costume balls. There are many more customswhich vary from region toregion.obec-smerdaky.skThe celebration of
fašiangy ends with theceremonial burial of thebass fiddle. This symbol-izes the beginning offasting and the solemnityassociated with theLenten season.Klátova Nová VesToday the Lenten restrictions are not as strict
in Slovakia as they were years ago when fastingand abstinence were strictly observed. Here is apopular Slovak-American treat that many house-holds will enjoy on Shrove Tuesday. Cheregies (Čeregi)1 cup buttermilk 1 cup beer 1 egg 1 tsp baking soda 4 cups flour or more 3-4 tsp sugar pinch of salt
Sift flour and combine all the ingredients until smooth dough is formed. Add moreflour if needed to roll the dough. Flour the board and rolling pin, roll the dough toabout ½ inch thickness. Cut dough diagonally into long strips, about 2” wide. Cutstrips into 2x4 inches diamond shapes. Cut 1 inch slits in the middle. Thread onecorner through the hole and pull gently. Preheat about 1/2 – 1 inch layer of oil infrying pan. Fry cheregies on medium heat until golden brown, about 2 minuteseach side but watch closely. You will have to add more oil when needed. Set onpaper towels to cool down little. Sprinkle powder sugar on top while still warm. For more recipes, visit www.facebook.com/SlovakHomemadeCake or email

Assembly 800Giving Thanks BasketThis past Holiday Season, the
National Slovak Society Assembly 800,partnered with American Renal Associ-ate Dialysis Center, in Naples, Floridaand with the contributions from theparishioners of All Saints ByzantineCatholic Church in North Fort Myerscontributed to the needy in the commu-nity. We brought in non perishable fooditems, toiletry items and cleaning sup-plies to help support the food pantry atSt. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Monastery. This took place on December 6th, Feastof Saint Nicholas. Assembly 586Once again, our assembly enjoyed
our annual Christmas Party with a tastyfamily-style Czech feast, White Elephantgift game and quarterly business meet-ing. We raised money to make ourmatching funds contribution to Opera-tion Support Our Troops America anddonated online to the organization, which operates solely by means of do-nated goods and funds for shippingcare packages to troops stationed in theMiddle East. We have collected items inthe past for this cause; it’s an ongoingeffort on our assembly’s part to helpmake our serving men and women’slives a tiny bit more comfortable. Addi-tionally, this monetary contribution wasmade to defray the U.S. Postal Ser-vice’s $25 per box mailing charge. We’re happy that NSS will match ourdonation and enable OSOT America toship even more snacks, socks, sham-poo, sunscreen, etc. to our armedforces who are in harm’s way.Based on enthusiasm for the meal
we were treated to at Bohemian Gardenin Downers Grove, we decided to haveour spring meeting and activity there onMarch 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. We hopeto see even more of our Assembly 586members at that time.Happy New Year from 586!
