The Lyndon House Arts Center is a local treasure with its large, airy galleries overlooking the Appalachian foothills. In the gallery shop, the Visual Arts Guild of Athens offers works for sale in a variety of media.
Head a few blocks outside downtown to the Tracy Street arts warehouse complex to check out innovative, contemporary art at ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art, or high flying performance art at Canopy Studio.
Headliner entertainers, touring Broadway productions, and top comedians grace The Classic Center Theatre stage. Athens is also the proud home of several local theatre companies and UGA productions. Be sure to look up the schedules when you’re in town!
Check out the work of local artists at R. Wood Studio Ceramics, the Gallery at Good Dirt, Aurum Studios and Athena Jewelers. Pick up supplies to make your own jewelry at Native America Gallery.

don’t miss:Cross over Broad Street in downtown Athens
and venture back two centuries to the early days of America’s first state-chartered college, the University of Georgia. Historic North Campus is modeled after Yale University. Hear a church bell ringing? That’s the bell tower of the Greek Revival-style UGA Chapel, where students head to celebrate successes, from an “A” on a test to a huge Bulldog victory.
Get a glimpse into the lives and legacy of antebellum Athens by touring four historic house museums, each representing a different architectural style from the 19th century. Start at the Church-Waddel-Brumby House (1820), believed to be Athens’ oldest surviving residence, which now serves as the Athens Welcome Center. Set off on the “Museum Mile” to see three more house museums including the T.R.R. Cobb House (1852), Taylor-Grady House (1844), and the Ware-Lyndon House (1856).
Historical and cultural treasures are on display at the UGA Special Collections Libraries, including interactive broadcast clips from Peabody Award-winning TV and
radio favorites, a replica of Senator Richard B. Russell’s Washington office, and Georgia history artifacts.

#2 COllEGE SpORTS TOwN — sporTsillusTraTed.coM
Athens more than doubles its population on home football weekends with
a tailgate scene that can’t be beat! The UGA sports action goes on far
beyond football season, and best of all, admission to most UGA sports
events is FREE! Plan to see a game or match while you’re in town.
don’t miss:Visit Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall for UGA sports
memorabilia, interactive displays, and video highlights from the best moments in Georgia sports history. See the 1980 national championship football trophy and Heisman trophies won by Frank Sinkwich and Herschel Walker, plus exhibits from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics sports held in Athens.
On historic North Campus, relax on Herty Field. This lovely lawn with sparkling fountain is the site of early Bulldog football games played under Pop
Warner in the 1890s. It’s a far cry from Sanford Stadium, which seats over 92,000 fans and is the nation’s seventh-largest on-campus college stadium today.

don’t miss:Athens offers an extensive selection of
athletics, natural resources, parks, and recreation. Take a walk (or hike, or climb, or kayak) that’s a bit off the beaten path.
Keep the kids occupied at Memorial Park and Bear Hollow Zoo, which includes a lake, picnic shelters, and playground area, plus a nature trail and dog park. The small zoo includes many species of Georgia’s native wildlife — the wooded setting stays shady for comfort in the summer months.
Other family favorites include Sandy Creek Nature Center’s interactive animal exhibits and ADA-accessible trails, the indoor Active Climbing facility, the Tony Hawk-designed Skate Park of Athens, and Classic City Rollergirls matches at The Classic Center Arena.
Visitors may not realize that the North Oconee River flows right by downtown Athens. A 3.5-mile Greenway linear park is open sunrise to sunset to all types of non-motorized uses, including dogs on leashes. Over 50 interpretive heritage markers are placed along a half-mile stretch by Dudley Park. Enjoy the beauty of the river with a one- to two-hour kayak trip from Big Dogs on the River.

GARDENinsider tip
April is a recommended
month for green thumbs to visit
Athens. Check dates for Plantapalooza
plant sales and the Piedmont Gardeners’
Garden Tour.
STroLL THroUGH A
don’t miss:The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a 313-acre
preserve with five miles of trails, a stunning tropical conservatory, and themed gardens showcasing native and international flora. Special events and programs are held year-round. Linger in the café and gift shop. You’ll also find the Garden Club of Georgia State Headquarters and the lovely Day Chapel.
See horticulturists in action at the Trial Gardens at UGA, as they determine the “best of the best” plants for our region’s high heat and humidity. Winners such as Homestead Verbena receive the Athens Select label and are sold in many garden centers.
Athens’ 19th-century house museums feature authentic period gardens that were a large part of antebellum lifestyles. The T.R.R. Cobb garden was recreated based on records from the original owner, and the Taylor-Grady House garden
is a classic formal design. The Church-Waddel-Brumby House garden is a quiet spot right downtown, and the Ware-Lyndon House is undergoing its own garden project.
Athens is home to America’s first
Garden Club. This garden
heritage is clear in all the lovely garden
nooks and paths throughout town.
insider tip
The State Botanical Garden of
Georgia has been named an Important Birding Area
by the Georgia Audobon Society.
Take a ugA Arboretum Walking Tour and visit other garden
attractions.
