A PROJECT WITH WARMTH AND VITALITY

As a child growing up in this area, I remember everyone had their small patch of backyard where they were growing something organic and there were little competitions going on between neighbours to grow the best tomatoes, the best cucumbers and the like. Walking the streets as a kid I also vividly recall there were a lot of interesting fences and hedges. At the time we knew who lived behind virtually every fence! It was simply the locational language we used.

Interestingly, that notion was the seed for the unique sense of identity and visual approach we wanted to create for this Libertine project. At first we wanted to break up the façade vertically to create a fence-like effect, but then we quickly progressed to warming this up with the use of timber screens and more horizontal, box shapes, reminiscent of the area’s small vegie boxes and gardens. The façade now reads as a streetscape of sorts through play of angles and curves to create texture.

Where we’ve got to is a point of using timber and natural elements at a human level, at a balustrade level, not mindlessly whacking it on a face that’s three levels up and contrived. This creates unique,

intimate spaces that go to the next level for apartment living. You’re in your own home, you then see that greenery in the outdoor elements of your residence, as well as seeded throughout the building, from its appealing entrance complete with internal light well and reflection pool, through to its inspired rooftop terrace complete with usable, communal spaces.

In many ways this project takes me back to my childhood. It has a sense of togetherness with an ability for individuality. It’s a project with warmth and vitality. The key characteristics of the neighbourhood that I know, past and present, are quite the same. There’s certainly been an upgrade of the housing stock, but residents here will come to appreciate all of the things that people in this area have known for years. You’re not on top of the city but you’re close enough to it. Libertine’s Victoria Rd address is similarly not on top of High St or Station St, but you’re certainly close enough to them, able to interact with them as you please, or enjoy a stunning home or the expanse and parklands nearby as alternatives. It doesn’t get much better so close to the city.

THE THING ABOUT NORTHCOTE

QUINTESSENTIAL NORTHSIDE

Northcote is Melbourne’s quintessential northside suburb. Only 7 kilometres from the CBD, it’s blessed with a rich history of industry and progress, enjoys unrivalled amenity and delivers a healthy dose of culture and personality to the city on a daily basis.

In Northcote your location is your opportunity. This is a melting pot for the senses where, day or night, there are things to do, people to see and great experiences to be had. Fortunately, Northcote is well serviced with a diverse network of buses, trains and trams, making getting around a breeze.

While certainly a thriving urban pocket, where Northcote really sets itself apart from other urban postcodes is with its access to outdoor and leisure opportunities. If you’re active you can make good use of the Northcote Aquatic Centre, Yarra Bend’s famous green spaces including Yarra Bend Golf Course and Driving Range, as well as the superb bike trails that allow access in and around the city.

A MELTING POT OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE

Mitchell runs Harvest Wine & Liquor, an institution on High Street. He has a great range of small producer wines, lots of imports and craft beers. He highlighted to us his experience and observations, in particular that Northcote’s not too far from the city, people came here because it was affordable and it was in a good spot, but also even more than that, it had something a bit more to offer with a centralised community where people wanted to make it their local.

IT’S THE GROUP OF CREATIVES THAT ARE HANGING OUT HERE

Neisha is a fashion designer who produces locally and works with a couple of makers around Northcote. She works extensively with sustainable fashion and using zero waste cutting techniques and principles. For Neisha, she appreciates the designer shops in the area supporting local artists, as well as the superb music in the area at the likes of the Northcote Social Club.

Emily

When the Sydney Morning Herald went in search of Australia’s hippest hoods in late 2013 they targeted Northcote.

They also captured the history and essence of this special place:

Historically, Greek and and Italian immigrants made their way to Northcote along with their cafes, delis and artisan factories. Then came the artists and students – and Bohemia was born. Now kids who grew up here have come back with their families while a new generation of creatives has brought eclectic charm to this northern jewel, without it losing its roots.

To this day, it’s the people that make this place tick.

Emily works at The Guild, a shop selling hand made items made by Clay and Sunday Morning Design including jewellery, clothes, ceramics and bedwear.

She highlights the cafes, bands and nightlife of the area as standouts, appreciates that there’s a really good crowd in Northcote and describes her time in the area in one word – fun.

EVERYONE’S INTO UNIQUE STYLE

THE THING ABOUT NORTHCOTE

THE FULL DINING EXPERIENCE

Northcote has some of the best dining options in Melbourne serving up everything from the full fine dining experience to well priced, produce driven offerings and everything in-between including daily staples of first rate coffee and brunch as well as critical late night favourites.

Dine in style at the likes of Estelle or Merricote where you can appreciate gastronomic alchemy, sophistication and luxury. Enjoy the likes of Pizza Meine Liebe, Otsumami Japanese, Sigiri Sri Lankan or the family-friendly Wesley Anne, an old church turned bar, restaurant and live music venue simply perfect for summer twilights. Perhaps catch a movie at the famous Westgarth Cinema, followed by drinks at Kelvin, one of the coolest bars Melbourne has to offer.

If it’s great coffee and brunch you’re after you simply can’t go past the likes of Barry in Northcote, Penny Farthing Espresso on Rucker’s Hill, or Palomino on High Street, while Red Door Corner Store delivers baked delights the likes of which Melburnians traverse town for.

Jacinta

Loren runs one of the area’s trendiest cafes – Barry on High Street. It’s the comforting & cosy little vibe that strikes her about the suburb.

“You feel a real sense of community in the area. A lot of the customers know each other. It has a real village type atmosphere. There’s a cinema, great little bars, the organic store, some great little things opening and happening.”

A COMFORTING & COSY LITTLE VIBE

Travis runs Brown & Bunting bookstore. While he opened the store over five years ago, he’s always liked the area, having lived here before opening the shop. In addition to the good food, relaxed vibe and families he highlights as being reflective of the area Travis notes that in Northcote people are very conscious that you’re here and you’re making an effort and they like to support that. “If you look along the street you’ll see that there are a lot of small businesses that are owned by local people who are attempting to add culture and colour and something honest and straight to the landscape.”

A LOT OF FAMILIES & GOOD FOOD

Emily has been running Palomino’s café & restaurant in Northcote for over four years. In that time she’s developed a loyal customer base and loves that every day is totally different. She tries to support all local businesses, with an ethos of “support the little people and they will support you”. She particularly appreciates the community feel and the arts culture that is synonymous with the area.

EVERY DAY IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT

Jacinta loves the feeling of family and connections in Northcote. She lives and works in the area and can’t really imagine moving.

Green Horse, where she works, originally opened as a pop-up store based around a sustainable theme and selling environmentally friendly, socially conscious and organic items. After two summer pop-ups, it turned into a permanent store.

“It’s interesting to see how many customers were excited to see us stay and turn into a permanent shop. It was like a celebration with certain customers turning up with gifts, excited that we were staying.”
