Fumigation as per ISPM 15 standards

Fumigation is a process in which a commodity is treated in a gas tight enclosure for a certain period of time to eliminate pest infestation without leaving any residual effect. It plays a key role, particularly in grain preservation as it controls insects developing inside and outside the grain storage and crawling and hidden pests. Methyl Bromide is the ONLY fumigant permitted under the ISPM 15 standards for wood packaging materials used in exporting commodities. The administration of the ISPM 15 standards related to the chemical gas Methyl Bromide in the wood packaging industry is directly supervised by the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA).

Mold Prevention : Mold – Free Pallets

Molds to be those fungi that produce pigmented spores on the wood surface. These spores are typically capable of becoming airborne and can land on any wet wood where they germinate to produce hyphae that grow in to the wood to use stored sugars, proteins and other compounds and this in turn will discolour the wood. Molds can also be limited by application of prophylactic fungicides. These chemicals are applied by dipping or spraying shortly after sawing and can provide protection for three to six months

Cargo Fumigation

Fumigation plays an important role when food grains in ship cargo are transported between countries to prevent from various pests attacks. In most cases it is done as a preventive measure. However, fumigation of shipping con-tainers is advisable, if shipment duration is longer than five days, as phosphine concentration inside the container will be higher for the first 2 – 3 days and not safe for the person who is discharging the cargo. Usage of appropriate PPE during discharge is always advisable. Safe disposal of phosphine residue is also import-ant. Usually, a Warning Label will be placed in containers after the fumigation.

Ship Hold Fumigation

For local consumption U.A.E. depends 100% on import of all food grains and other agricultural products. Due to its strategic location it is known as import and reexport hub. Often many ships arrive at various U.A.E. port and dock for many days with hundreds of thousands tons of food grains. During this period, many of them procure fumiga-tion services locally. To minimise the spread of pests ISPM15 specifies requirements for treatment and the certification mark on wooden packaging, which is adopted by close to 200 countries. ISPM15 covers pallets, boxes and crates. Only after a prescribed treatment can wood be marked in the manner as being ISPM15 compliant.

Warehouse fumigation involves fumigating the commodities either in loose conditions or packed in bags or other packing, stored in godowns, warehouses, storage which is stationary.

Some typical fumigation methods:• Stack fumigation under tarpaulin.• Fumigating outdoor batch of goods.• Silo fumigation for bulk goods.• Fumigating factories, wheat processing chain, animal feed etc.

Food processing machinery fumigation

Anti-Fungal treatment for pallets used in export packing

The treated wooden packing materials will last longer and can be used by the customers to exhibit the products in the importing country. Anti fungal treatment for wooden packing materials is carried out with efficiency fungicides prior to shipment.

Heat Treatment for wood packing materials with IPPC logo

The only currently approved measure for wood treatment is heat treatment where the wood is treated to a minimum temperature of 56ºC for at least 30 minutes (HT) throughout the profile of the wood.

Wood treated in accordance with ISPM15 should be marked with:• The IPPC logo for wood packaging material• The ISO two-digit code for the country of manufacture• A unique producer code assigned by the National Plant Protection Organisation• The appropriate treatment code, HT (for Heat Treatment)• No other information is permitted in the mark which must be contained within a border
