Development of Program
• Aeronautical Engineering program at Mississippi State University began in 1934
• Designated Aerospace in 1962– Primarily aeronautics focus
• Dual track program instituted in fall 2006– Aeronautics Concentration– Astronautics Concentration

• Offered for first time in fall of 2006• Eight students• Two projects
– Asteroid Rendezvous and Sample Extraction– Polar Express (Lunar Polar Mapping Mission)
• supported by ESMD funding
• Projects essentially paper studies

• MSU currently funded by NASA to develop a small satellite capability for the nation– Partnered with Surrey Satellite
Technology, Limited– Tasks
• Develop a lunar navigation/communication satellite for launch in 3-4 years
• Develop an interdisciplinary graduate program in Satellite Engineering
