MESSAGE FROM THE

CO-CHAIRS

The Associates continue to enjoy growth and resurgence amidst the calm of the familiar and theexcitement for the future! In response to the ever-increasing level of involvement with WAGinitiatives and our projects, we have embraced a horizontal leadership model. This model aspiresto equally share the responsibilities and recognizes the need for succession planning. To date, the Development Committee, Education Committee, Communications Committee andMembership Committee all operate with Co-Chairs. This year, we extended the model to include the Chair and Vice-Chair positions and are findingthis team approach to be very successful. Esme Scarlett and Andrea Cibinel act as Co-Chairsassisted by Vice-Chairs Pat McCullough and Sherry Glanville, while Susan Knox has agreed toserve as Past Chair. Art4Art, a unique fundraising project of the Associates, took place this past June 13 at the newoffices of TDS Law, located on the 17th floor of True North Square. Patrons enjoyed a superbprivately curated Canadian collection focusing on the work of Manitoba artists, several of whomwere present. Once again, we benefitted greatly from the involvement of Tannis Richardson inthe role of Honourary Chair. Our fall season successfully launched at the lovely riverside home of Faye Warren, whograciously entertained 52 guests. We were delighted to have Dr. Stephen Borys, WAG Director &CEO, join us and once again voice his gratitude for our collective commitment to the work of theWAG. A guided tour of the Inuit Art Centre, offered to all Associates, took place after the September 16General Meeting. We had the pleasure of being further informed by local architect, MichaelRobertson, and Project Manager, Rick Chopp. Our new Terms of Reference were ratified at the September 16 General Meeting and werecreated in keeping with the template currently used by the WAG Board of Governors.  On October 7, 2019, the Executive of the Associates of the WAG enjoyed a full-day retreat withthe mission to discuss our Goals and Action Plan for 2019-2020. The Statement of Purpose wasrevisited to ensure that it continues to align with that of the WAG. Old By-Laws were reviewed, and Appendices suggested & revised to include the various Executive Sub-Committee jobdescriptions.  Andrea Cibinel & Esme Scarlett PHOTO BY SYNONYM ART CONSULTATION, COURTESY OF THE WAG

On Monday, October 21, theAssociates were treated to aprivate tour of the Small Worldsexhibition of miniature Inuitsculptures. As a tour guide, I have hadseveral occasions to visit theSmall Worlds: Inuit MiniatureCarving exhibit on the MezzanineLevel of the WinnipegArt Gallery. This exhibition bringstogether over 100 miniaturecarvings by Inuit artists fromnineteen communities acrossNunavut. In my preparation tofacilitate tours of Small Worlds, I attended a tour from the curatorof the show, Jocelyn Piirainen,WAG Assistant Curator of InuitArt. I feel particularly grateful toenjoy these tiny works of art

through the eyes of young peoplevisiting the Gallery on schooltours. When leading a schooltour, my primary mission is toshare a sense of passion for andunderstanding of the art. Thetour is conversational, encouraging the students torespond to questions. My job isto keep the group curious andengaged, their enthusiasmmeasures the success of thevisit. The Small Worlds exhibit isa wonderful way to approach artappreciation for young people. The tiny sculptures have beenput on display in a way that isaccessible for young audiences. The themes represented in theexhibition allow for a discussionon Inuit beliefs and ways of life.In observing the smallsculptures,

students spend time viewing allthe delicate detail and have lotsof observations andinterpretations to share. This artempowers young people to sharetheir ideas and builds anunderstanding and admirationfor Inuit art and culture. This exhibition is a wonderfulshow of what is to come whenthe WAG opens the Inuit ArtCentre in 2020! BY REBECCA HARRISON
