Asian Longhorned
Beetle
• Major threat to urban and forest hardwood trees
• Native to Asia
• First detected in the U.S. in NY during the 1980s
• First major infestation –Brooklyn in 1996
• Currently found in MA, NY, and OH; eradicated from NJ and IL.
Asian Longhorned Beetle(Anoplophora glabripennis)
• Large conspicuous
beetles (3/4-1 ½ inches
in length)
• Very long white and black
striped antennae
• Glossy-black body with
irregular white spots
• Black scutellum
• Can have bluish feet
Identification of ALB
The Banded Ash Borer is a pest
of ash, hickory, elm, and oak
Eggs are the size of a grain of rice, creamy -white,
and laid individually in an aggregated pattern
Larvae feed beneath bark initially; tunnel into
sapwood and heartwood when larger
Mature larva is 2” long; legless; head
not visible but mandibles protrude
Repeated damage can lead to dieback of the
tree crown and eventual death of the tree
