When we study in a college, striving to become a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer, that is education for a living. On the other hand, education for life requires an understanding of the essential principles of spirituality; it is about gaining a deeper understanding of the world, our minds, our emotions and ourselves. We all know that the real goal of education is not to create people who understand only the language of technology; the main purpose of education should be to impart a culture of the heart, a culture based on spiritual values.

Communication through technology has made the world a small place yet there is so much of a division. Today’s world needs people who express goodness in their words and in actions with which the darkness prevailing in today’s society will be dispelled and the light of peace and non-violence will once again illuminate this earth. Let us work together towards this goal.

Excerpts from the key note address delivered by Amma during the closing plenary session of the World Parliament of Religions held at Barcelona, Spain.

Sri Mata Amritanandamayi DeviChancellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

“The uniqueness of the MBA-MS dual degree program is many fold apart from the few obvious ones. The MS courses mainly deal with strategy, development and analytics which is a must-have for any manager in today’s competitive world. Thus the MBA and the MS program go hand in hand. The Bengaluru campus houses a cozy atmosphere and students become one close-knit family – encouraging healthy competition, learning to work in multi-faceted teams and leading initiatives. One of the most enlightening highlights of the program is the “unlearning and learning” period at University of Buffalo (UB), State University of New York (SUNY). Not only were the students exposed to an entirely different pedagogy but the stint at UB also taught us the importance of working in diverse conditions and groups, working with deadlines and exams that give us every kind of advantage while being the most challenging. This educational modality helped us to think better and faster even in our MBA courses, making our presentations and answers smarter and more strategic.”

Ms. Vidyalakshmi Nair , MBA – MS Student, Bengaluru Campus

Learning at ASB is a combination of different teaching methodologies and comprises of class lectures, case discussions, seminars, presentations, group activities, management games, role plays, field projects, industry visits, reflective writing exercises, book reviews and video reviews. Regular colloquia offered by industry experts connect students to the relevance of linking business practice to theory. Business simulations using CAPSTONE provides our students a comprehensive immersion experience in the competitive and complex world of business and the opportunity to experience managing a complete business.

A typical student day consists of at least three classroom sessions of seventy five

minutes duration, one hour of hands-on experience with computer based exercises and at least two hours of course preparatory work (both individually and in groups); thus requiring on an average, 10 – 12 hours of total work each day.

After the end of first year of the MBA programme, students undertake a compulsory 8-week summer project with an organization. This summer placement provides them an opportunity to understand and experience the corporate world first hand and prepares them for their final placement.

Students are sensitized to societal concerns through regular opportunities for selfless service at the University and the community.

CoimbatorePrAGATIThe most awaited event of Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore - PRAGATI was held from February 1-2, 2013. This was one such event, which symbolized the power of synergy. Uniqueness, being the key element behind the success of PRAGATI every year, this edition of PRAGATI scaled greater heights by inducing the Indian (ness) in us through the theme ‘Indovation’.

The term Indovation (an abbreviation of ‘Indian innovation’) was coined in February 2009 by Navi Radjou, the Executive Director of the Centre for India & Global Business (CIGB) at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. With the growing population of India, and the diverse kinds of markets which exist in our country, the world is waking up to the fact of the change arising within India. Corporates around the world are increasingly interested to be a part of this potential innovation boom.

This much awaited event started off in grand style and over 250 students from 25 colleges participated in PRAGATI 2013. Mr. K Ravi, CFO, Roots Industries Limited, Coimbatore inaugurated

Over the last few years, the MBA students at Amritapuri and Kochi were involved in the overall management of the special invitees, interviewing attendees from various walks of life (including special invitees) and capturing their experiences around AMMA. This interaction with people was an eye-opener for many students. AMMA’s birthday celebration also provided the students a chance to test and experiment some of the principles and concepts of project management and event management they had learnt in the classroom.

Corporate and Industry relations (CIr)In a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary university like Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, the students have many options to choose from, in terms of programmes, courses and specializations. In order to cater to the requirements of students from diverse disciplines for building competencies in domain areas as well as in life skills, and to play a vital role in the fulfillment of their dreams and aspirations, the university has established a dedicated centre, namely, Corporate and Industry Relations (CIR) at its headquarters in Coimbatore, with branches in the other four campuses.

CIR’s mission is: “To facilitate holistic career development of students through comprehensive and systematic training on Life Skills and build competence in core areas through innovative practical applications”. The CIR logo embodies its motto – “YogahaKarmasuKaushalam”, which translates from Sanskrit into the following - work done to perfection is indeed yoga. (Srimad Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 2, Verse 50).

The big team comprises counsellors and trainers who are experts in their domains and have vast experience in industry. For smooth and effective functioning, CIR has been divided into seven key areas: Learning and Development, Corporate Relations, Career Facilitation, Entrepreneurship Development, Alumni Networking, Corporate Communication and Corporate Training. Each vertical has its role clearly defined and is responsible for strategic planning and execution. A feedback system helps to measure the effectiveness and impact. The ultimate measure is the quality of achievement and satisfaction of stakeholders, especially the students.

CIR has been organizing Learning and Development sessions in the three major areas of Life Skills training – Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal and Communication Skills and Soft Skills. A major milestone for Learning and Development was the introduction of the credit system in the Corporate Skills course for the MBA students from the academic year 2013 – 2014. In addition to the Life Skills training, industry-specific core competency training is also provided to students in their domain areas, enabling them to correlate theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Training programmes for various competitive examinations are facilitated by CIR with the help of experts in the respective areas. Courses in foreign languages like German, French and Japanese are provided in order to empower students to take up global careers. The central theme of training is the overall development of the students’ personality, with necessary emphasis on communication skills and reasoning abilities. To have a real-life experience, mock

interviews and group discussions are conducted with internal and external experts on the panel. Tests are administered frequently to simulate corporate testing processes in intensity, variety and content. This ensures that there are no surprises when the students undergo the company placement process. The efficacy of this approach has been borne out by the placement record and subsequent feedback from employers.

The Corporate Relations function is all-encompassing as it has to serve varying needs of multiple disciplines of the University. CIR has been able to establish excellent rapport with senior officials of industry, through regular visits and other means of communication. Relentless efforts in this direction have paid rich dividends in many areas like industry participation in curriculum development, faculty development, seminars, colloquia, national and international conferences, contests, summer training, internships and projects, as well as MoUs with companies. CIR has signed many Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the corporate sector that are beneficial to students, faculty, the University and the industry. The University’s close relationship with the corporate world has benefited students and faculty in terms of exposure to industry best practices and widening horizons.

Career facilitation, popularly known as Placement, has always been a key result area at Amrita. The standing and visibility of the University and the quality of alumni have prompted past recruiters to vie with each other for early slots of recruitment. Concerted efforts have been made to give ample opportunities to students to find careers in their respective branches, specializations and domains. Major global companies regularly visit Amrita to meet their talent needs. What is most satisfying to faculty and management is the feedback from employers regarding significant contributions made by the alumni in their domain areas, the positive influence of their personal behaviour on their colleagues and their attitude towards the profession. It is a reflection of the assimilation by the students of the richness of academic ambience and the value system that Amrita has always been providing to them during their academic life.

Entrepreneurship development is yet another key area. To infuse entrepreneurial spirit among youngsters who dare to innovate and initiate, Amrita Centre for Entrepreneurship (ACE) has been established. The objective of ACE includes the design, development and execution of high impact entrepreneurship programmes to create opportunities for Amrita students at local and national levels. ACE aims at forming student clubs in each campus to promote entrepreneurship. The vision is to develop the capacity of ACE to run a mature set of entrepreneurship development programmes over the next 3 to 5 years.

ASB Brochure 2014 65

Page 68: ASB Brochure 2014

Another area that has recently assumed great importance is that of Corporate Communication. This function is being undertaken by CIR with the sole objective of creating visibility in print and electronic media through regular write-ups like features, event reports, etc. In addition, this vertical also prepares advertisements and advertorials for various programmes for the entire university as well as for various vacancy positions. This arm is also responsible for creating brochures and other collaterals.

The alumni of an institution are its flag-bearers. Their character, personality, achievement and recognition add great value to the positioning of the alma mater as a prestigious educational brand producing high quality professionals. The stronger the network of alumni, the greater is the impact. Additionally, the sense of belonging and identity is enhanced and this has a positive outcome when senior batch alumni return to the campus to deliver guest lectures, provide mentoring, participate in campus placement process, etc. With the above in mind, CIR has initiated a focused effort to strengthen the alumni (called ‘Amritians’) network.

In order to meet the growing demands of the corporate world for upgrading the skills of employees, especially at the managerial level, CIR has evolved specific corporate training programmes covering areas like leadership development, organizational development, change management, stress management, organizational transformation, emotional intelligence, coaching for performance, etc. Organizations have come forward to avail of this service from our experts at CIR. This kind of engagement helps in the recognition of Amrita as a centre of multidisciplinary excellence in the eyes of the corporate world.

Summer PlacementsAt Amrita School of Business we believe in Good Summer Placement performance leading to Good Final Placement. Summer placements are given equal if not more importance than final placements. Apart from facilitating in final placements, CIR works closely with Corporates, faculty and Alumni to obtain summer placements for the first year students.

The summer projects immediately follow the first year’s coursework for a period of 8 weeks commencing mid-April. ASB places a great deal of importance on the summer project experience of students. The first year curriculum incorporates a comprehensive training targeted towards preparing them for summer projects. A dual mentorship involving faculty and alumni, has consistently reaped positive feedback on our students from the industry.

In the final analysis, a genuine attempt is made to provide the students with real work life experience during the summer internship in order to equip them with the demands of the Corporate.

Alumni SpeakAlumni are our ambassadors to the external world. Sixteen batches of our past students have grown phenomenally in their career and some of the students from recent batches are on their path to successful career. Some of our alumni have also started on their own and now are successful entrepreneurs.

Jitesh mukunDAn (Class of 1998)Vice-President, J.P. Morgan, Bangalore

“My two year stint with ASB was a very enriching experience. The management programme is broad-based and specialized in business education, which helped me to counter the conflicting situations in the business environment with elan and confidence. It has helped me to develop the basics of business methodology with integrity wherein I am able to apply the same in the day to day transactions and thereby leading an effective and qualitative performance. ASB has led the foundation of the ethics in management that has helped me build blocks of practical experiences which continues till date. Am grateful to the entire team of ASB for providing me such a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the first batch of ASB, Coimbatore.”

rAJ J. kuruP (Class of 1999)Director, Business Development

Australia South Zensar Technologies Ltd, “ASB has been a turning point in my life. Two years at ASB has transformed me as an individual and as a professional. The stint has given me a lot of confidence and knowledge to rub shoulders with the best in the industry, and to work for some of the finest companies in the world. Adaptability to changing work environments and the ability to tackle demanding situations are two of the exemplary by-products of the tough, modern and innovative curriculum at ASB”.

BABuJi nAtArAJAn (Class of 1999)Consultant, Karya Technologies, USA

“Looking back, joining Amrita was easy, but leaving was tough. The incredible wealth of intellectual and infrastructural resources at Amrita enlightened learning and made the two years of life over there a unique experience. The strength of the concepts and the emphasis on application goes a long way across boundaries. I used the reading materials as reference for my research (Masters in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology in the US). The best part of the program is the diversity of students. The group was so diverse in all aspects and due to the exposure I was easily able to adapt to the international scenario both in academics and in the business environment. In short, it was great experience in all aspects”

rAJeev G. kAimAl (Class of 1999)Vice President - Strategy, IFMR Trust

The success of any business depends on the quality of its people and the ethical practices it follows. Believe me, these are two things that I learned at Amrita which has helped me to grow in this field, and I’ve been passing on the same learning to my subordinates as well.

honey krishnAn P. (Class of 2000)Project Manager, Dell Services, Bengaluru

“Excellent infrastructure and well qualified faculty were the prime reasons that prompted me to do my PGDM with Amrita. I had no

idea about the changes that this serene campus, its wonderful inmates and the holistic life could bring to my personality. By the time I completed the course, I could feel the difference. Even now, after decade in the industry I feel the difference from MBA’s form other schools. Whenever asked, on choosing the right business school, my bet is on Amrita School of Business, because MBA is not about learning from books. It’s the education that you get in those two years you have spent on campus, an environment which prepares you to face the Corporate world. From the day one, one continues to grow faster and higher under its top quality faculty, value based education and the divine grace of Amma”.

AnuPAm rAJ GAutAm (Class of 2001)Engagement Lead - Global Consulting Practice,

Tata Consultancy Services, Mumbai“During my corporate tenure of 10+ years, people have always asked me from where have I graduated. And I have said proudly, ASB. Most of the time they are taken by surprise. ASB has given me confidence, and backed by solid academic foundation, to compete and excel under difficult and challenging business environments. A perfect blend of IQ, EQ and attitude is necessary to develop into successful business managers and ASB with its value based management education is the right place to nurture them.”

visAlAkshi krishnAn (Class of 2001) Johnson & Johnson, Canada

I am so proud to have completed my PGDBM from an Institution like Amrita (2001 batch). Industry experience of 8+ years over-seas has taught me that success in job/work is about continuous learning & passion & love for what you do. An educational institution that makes a difference is the one that teaches not only the “what”, but also the “how”. That I believe is the spirit of

management education at Amrita. I recently had the great opportunity of visiting the campus after 10 years. I was struck with awe at the campus & the state of the art facilities. The developments & the growth within few years are incredible. Looking back, I believe that the education from Amrita is not only text book learning but it teaches a way of life. It moulds professionals with great value systems to succeed in all facets of life.

AnithA G (Class of 2003)Human Resources, Apple Inc., Austin, Texas

All I would like to say is that, my education in Amrita gave me all the confidence to face all these exams and interviews with utmost confidence. My first interview was with an Insurance company and there, the branch president mentioned that I was the first Indian he had ever interviewed and also that I was more confident and fluent than most others. After 3 rounds of interviews I was offered the job. The importance of value was another edge I had over others; I am so grateful to all at ASB, who helped me out in my education and personality building, without which I will not be in such a position today”.

Jiten sAnGhvi (Class of 2003),Manager, Deloitte

“In modern day organizations the expectations from employees go well past hard work and honesty into areas like emotional intelligence, gender sensitivity so on and so forth. ASB has provided me with strong foundation in ethics, independence and cultural diversity. The education system at ASB and the professors have helped shape my approach to these aspects at an early stage. This strong foundation continues to anchor my growth in a professional environment.”
