1. Introduction & EMAT Technique • EMAT ultrasonic is an ideal method for thickness measurements on conductive materials. The
advantages include: o Dry, non-contact inspection permits inspection of very hot (up to 1000ºC) and very cold
materials. Lack of couplant also provides extremely reliable and repeatable inspections with micrometer accuracy.
o Imperviousness to surface conditions. The materials can be coated, rough or dirty thus eliminating the need for conditioning the part for measurement.
o Easier probe deployment. Not having wedges or couplant, Snell’s law of refraction does not apply, and the angle of the probe does not affect the direction of propagation. This makes them easier to control and deploy, especially in automated environments.
• EMAT sensors can be used in pitch-catch (separate transmitter and receiver) or pulse-echo (same transmitter and receiver) mode.
• The most common wave modes used for thickness measurement are Longitudinal (L) or Shear Horizontal (SH). SH waves can be very easily generated on both ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic materials whereas L waves are more difficult to generate on ferromagnetic materials. This Application Sheet covers thickness measurements using EMAT Band (array of 8 sensors) which generates SH wave mode in all materials.
2. Equipment Options 2.1. Instrumentation Innerspec offers temate® PowerBox H with Innerspec Technologies Open Platform (ITOP) software that supports a variety of different applications including the additional software module called “Band” to operate EMAT Band sensor. 4.1. Calibration Using Auto-Correlation (ACF) Algorithm The Auto-Correlation Function algorithm provides peak to peak differential Time of Flight (TOF) measurements and it is the simplest solution to measure thickness with high accuracy. This algorithm requires that at least two back walls are present in the A-scan. If the material is too thick, attenuative or corrosive and only one back wall is present, use Zero Crossing Algorithm.
4.1.1. Detailed Procedure • Ensure Temperature Correction is Not Enabled (DAQ Tab) • Use a piece of known thickness of the same or similar material to determine the velocity of sound and
calibrate the instrument. Using a different material or the wrong thickness measurements will reduce the accuracy of the measurement.
• Always use Sensor-1 of the Band for calibration. • Select the calibration block of known thickness and place the probe gently on the calibration block. • Load the correct configuration file (e.g., Band-MC-SH-ACF-3-25mm) for the nominal thickness of the
material under test.
Step-‐1 • Ensure Temperature Correc4on is not enabled (DAQTab) • Place Sensor on the calibra4on block with known thickness value. • Load recommended Setup File (Band-‐MC-‐SH-‐ACF-‐3-‐25mm) to start new calibra4on.
Step-‐2
• Verify A-‐scan and Ensure G2 covers at least two back-‐walls. • Select Auto-‐Correla4on Algorithm for Thickness Measurements (G2 Menu) • Ensure Minimum Thickness is at least 1.5mm. • Ensure Frequency is 3MHz and Numbers Cycles "1".
Step-‐3
• press CAL and enable "Temperature Ref". Start pulsing and ensure thermocouple is reading correct temperature from the part or edit the value manually. • Enter Thickness Value (Depth1) and press ADD. • The device will start pulsing and will measure TOF and calculate Calibrated Velocity.
Step-‐4
• If in error, press CLEAR and again enter correct Thickness Value and press ADD. • Do not enter a second thickness value and press AD. This will invalidate the Calibra4on process. • Use can abort Calibra4on process at any stage by presing CANCEL "X". • Once done, Press OK and exit.

• Press “Gate” and select Gate2 (Flaw). • Setup Gate2 Start and Range to ensure that Gate2 width covers at least two back-walls from the
material. The gate values on the pre-loaded setup files are already preset for the material and thickness of the material, but small changes might be required.
• Press “Gate” and select Gate2 (Flaw). Ensure Gate2 Start (µs) and Range (µs) is correct according to the Setup File loaded for your application (Setup File Parameters).
• Select Gate 2 “Menu”. Ensure “Mode/Algo” is “Auto-correlation (ACF)” and “Min Thickness” is at least 1.5mm. The ACF algorithm will not work if min thickness is below 1.5mm. Select “Close” and exit this menu.
• Press “CAL” button. The Velocity Calibration menu will open at the bottom of the screen.
• Connect Thermocouple to the device. • Ensure that the device is calibrated to read correct Temperature values. (see: User Manual) • Enable “Temperature Ref” and start pulsing. The temperature field will read the temperature measured
with the thermo-couple. This field can also be edited manually in the absence of a thermocouple. • Press “Lock” to freeze the reference temperature value. • Navigate to “Depth 1” and edit the value for the thickness as per the calibration block using
alphanumeric pad and/or thumbwheel. • Press “√” button, and navigate to “Add” using thumbwheel and press “√” again. • The pulser will momentarily pulse and display the Depth and TOF (µs) values in the Velocity Calibration
menu. • The velocity in the material will be calculated automatically (sensor offset will not change). Both values
will be displayed in the CAL menu. • For calibration with ACF only one depth is necessary. Adding a second depth value will invalidate the
measurement. • Select “OK” and press “√” . • Exit to leave the calibration menu without updating the velocity/probe-offset. • Press the “Start/Stop” button to verify thickness measurements on the calibration block. Note: • Auto-correlation algorithm requires inserting a minimum thickness value. By default the system is set to
1.5mm. Increasing the number of cycles to improve penetration depth might require increasing this minimum thickness value.

4.2. Calibration Using Zero-Crossing Algorithm In curved geometries with un-parallel surfaces, highly attenuative materials or in corrosive environments normally only one back wall will be present as energy quickly scatters away from sensor. Zero-crossing algorithm is normally used when only one back-wall is present. This algorithm measures the total time from the start to a specific reference point on the waveform. In Zero-Crossing Algorithm a peak or the highest peak is selected in the waveform. The waveform following the peak when crosses x-axis (zero-crossing), the point is selected as reference for time of flight (TOF) measurements. To improve accuracy, a particular peak can also be selected by setting a threshold, where the first peak of the waveform crossing the threshold is selected and the zero-crossing following this peak becomes our reference for “TOF” measurements. For zero-crossing calibration it is required to insert at least two calibration points for velocity and sensor offset calculations.
Step-‐1 • Ensure/Input approximate Velocity of the Material (DAQTab) • Ensure Temperature Correc4on is not enabled • Place sensor on the smaller thickness step of the calibra4on block with known thickness and Load the recommended Setup File to start new calibra4on.
Step-‐2
• Verify A-‐scan and Ensure G2 covers at least one back-‐wall a_er mainbang. • Select Zero-‐Crossing Algorithm for Thickness Measurements (G2 Menu) • Ensure Frequency is 3MHz and Numbers Cycles "1". • Press CAL and enable "Temperature Ref". Start pulsing and ensure Thermocouple is reading correct temperature from the part or edit value manually.
Step-‐3 • Enter Thickness Value of the smaller thickness Step and press ADD. (Depth1) • The device will start pulsing and will measure Probe Offset (Probe Zero). • Now place probe on the larger thickness step of the calibra4on block. • Enter Thickness Value of the larger thickness Step and press ADD. (Depth2)
Step-‐4
• The device will now calculate new Probe Offset and Calibrated Velocity. The calibra4on process will complete. • If in error at any stage, press CLEAR and again enter correct Thicknes Value and press ADD. • Use can abort Calibra4on process at any stage by presing CANCEL "X". • Once done, Press OK and exit.

4.2.1. Detailed Procedure In case of thin materials where first back-wall is buried in the dead zone due to the initial transmitter pulse (mainbang), the available back-wall after the dead zone maybe selected for calibration. In such cases the calculated velocity in the material will not be correct and smaller thickness range (G2 range) must be selected for each calibration to avoid thickness measurement ambiguities. • Ensure Temperature Correction is Not Enabled (DAQ Tab). • A calibration Step Block is needed with at least two different thickness values. • During Calibration first measurement should be done on the thinner step which will determine the
probe-offset and second measurement on thicker step to calculate velocity. • Place the probe gently on the lower step of the calibration block. • Load the correct configuration file for the nominal thickness of the material under test. When in doubt or
material thickness is not known conventional piezo probes with delay line may be used to determine the actual thickness.
• Always start calibration with an approximate velocity of Shear Wave in the material. To adjust approximate velocity, navigate to the DAQ Tab and edit the velocity of the wave mode in the material to an approximate value.
• Press “Gate” and select Gate2 (Flaw). • Setup Gate2 Start and Range to ensure that Gate2 width covers the first available back-wall after initial
transmitter pulse (mainbang) for the range of thicknesses to be measured. • The gate values on the pre-loaded setup files are already preset for the material and thickness range,
but small changes might be required. • Press “Gate” and select Gate2 (Flaw). Ensure Gate2 Start (µs) and Range (µs) is correct according to
the Setup File loaded for your application. Refer to Setup File Parameters and adjust if needed. • Select Gate 2 “Menu”. Ensure “Mode/Algo” is “Zero-Crossing” and “First Peak after Threshold” is
disabled. • In most situations, using “Zero-Crossing” without enabling “First Peak after Threshold” is sufficient to
provide accurate readings.
• Press “√” button, navigate to “Add” using thumbwheel and press “√” again.

• The pulser will momentarily pulse and display the Depth and TOF (µs) values in the Velocity Calibration menu.
• Place sensor on the second step of the calibration block. • Navigate to “Depth 2” and edit the thickness value as per the second step of calibration block using
alphanumeric pad or thumbwheel. • Press “√” button, navigate to “Add” using thumbwheel and press “√” again. • The pulser will momentarily pulse and display the Depth and TOF (µs) values in the Velocity Calibration
menu. • The system will automatically calculate the Probe Offset and Calibrated velocity in the material • Do not “Add” a thickness value twice or it will invalidate the calibration. • Select “OK” and press “√” . • Exit to leave the calibration menu without updating the velocity/probe-offset. • Press the “Start/Stop” button to verify thickness measurements on the calibration block. Note: 1. Whenever 2nd back-wall is used for calibration with zero-crossing algorithm, the calculated calibrated velocity will be approximately half of the true velocity in the material. 2. If 3rd back-wall is used for calibration with zero-crossing algorithm, the calculated calibrated velocity will be approximately one third of the true velocity in the material.

4.3. Compensating Velocity for High Temperature Measurements
Changes in temperature affect the velocity of sound, which need to be taken into account for accurate thickness: • The “Temperature correction” can be performed on BAND tab by enabling “Temp Correction”. • Once enabled and device is pulsing, the temperature measured by the thermocouple will be displayed
in real time. This field can also be edited manually. • Enough time must be given to the thermocouple on hot part to reach a stable readout measuring the
temperature value correctly. • Press “Lock” to lock the temperature value read by thermocouple. • The corrected velocity will also be locked and displayed in Temperature Compensated Velocity field. • Apply transducer to the hot part and perform inspection. This inspection will be performed using the
temperature corrected velocity. • If the new measured temperature is not locked or “Lock” is not pressed, the measured temperature
value will continuously update the velocity value and therefore the temperature reading will also be unstable or keep changing.
Note: • Do not enable “Temp correction” if you are not interested in temperature corrections. • If temperature correction is used, perform the calibration enabling the “Temperature Ref” field. The
Calibration procedure explained above includes reference temperature during calibration. • Only high temperature transducers supplied by Innerspec Technologies should be used for high
temperature measurements. (Refer to the product Catalog). • To avoid damage to the sensors, keep the sensor within its rating and specifications.
