Natalie Sand

Hello. I'm Natalie Sand. I grew up on a farm in rural Elkton Minnesota. I work at

Mayo Clinic as a blood pressure technician. I've been married to Trever for a lucky

13 years and we have two children who attend Dover Eyota Schools. Caleb is 12

and in the 7th grade and Chloe is 10 and in 4th grade. When we are not working or

at school we enjoy doing things as a family, especially being outdoors.

Trever and I lived in northwest Rochester and became members at Hosanna just after getting

married. About a year later we moved to Marion and talked different times about looking for a

church closer to home. Trever summed it up best one day when he said "Why do we want to look

elsewhere? We like it at Hosanna."

Over the last nine years as our kids have grown through the various steps in Sunday School, I've

taken on different roles. I've helped with Vacation Bible School, the Spring Carnival, and

teaching Sunday School. I've enjoyed working with the children and seeing the world through their

eyes and perceptions. Many times they have said something that made me think of things in a

new perspective, so they've helped me as well. I was asked by another teacher to consider this

role as Discipleship Advocate. So while this is new to me, I hope to learn and grow from this

opportunity to serve.

Creation Station—Children In Worship Coming March 22

Have you had the privilege to sit next to a child in worship recently?

Children can bring such great wonder and joy to a worship service. Maybe you’ve

recently had the opportunity to sit behind a baby that was fussing and then

watched as he slowly drifted off to sleep in his father’s arms with such a look

of peace and contentment. Or maybe you were singing a song of praise and

when the chorus of that song arrived, the voice of a child echoed strong throughout the

sanctuary. How about the worship when everyone was reciting the Lord’s Prayer and a small

voice was heard, just a second or so behind everyone else, saying those exact same words. Even

the weeks when the Cheerios get “launched”....kids bring joy to worship.

By having our children in worship, we have the opportunity to continue to share our faith with

them. We’ve all heard the story of a child asking questions about communion or watching a baby

as she is baptized or memorizing the Lord’s Prayer just by being present.

Here at Hosanna, we hope to continue to encourage families to participate in worship together.

To that end, we will be piloting a new element - specifically for children - called a “Creation

March 1—The Book of Ephesians—Chapter 3

Paul’s ministry was inclusive of even the

Gentiles who were not originally welcomed into

the Christian faith by Jewish converts. In

Chapter 3 Paul tries to broaden the vision of

inclusiveness of the young Christian church.

March 8—The Book of Ephesians—Chapter 4

What does it mean to be a new creation in

Christ? Paul answers that question in Chapter

4 of Ephesians. Join us for this fascinating

study of how one lives a new life in Christ.

March 15—The Book of Ephesians—Chapter 5

Jesus not only came into this world to bring

salvation and eternal life. He came that we

might have life and live it fully. Jesus models

for us the godly life. Chapter 5 is our guide.

March 22—The Book of Ephesians—Chapter 6

Paul admonishes us to “put on the whole

armor of God!” What does this mean? Chapter

6 will investigate this important question.

Beth and Niel Wiegand will take us to Papua

Girl Scout Sunday—March 8

Thank you, Girl Scouts, for your service to our

community! Girl Scout Sunday is celebrated on

March 8. At the beginning of both worship

services, Girl Scouts and their leaders will carry

sermon and will be an interactive way for

children to participate in the worship and hear

the Gospel. The Creation Station will not be just

a “play area” but it will be another way for

children to engage in worship while their

parents are present and listening to the

sermon. We won’t ask children to leave the

sanctuary - we want them there - but we will

provide an opportunity for children to

participate in quiet activity during the sermon.

Watch for more information regarding

initiated on Sunday, March 22.

Good Earth Village—March 8

A representative from GEV will be at Hosanna

with us. Sharing will be during worship and with

the children during the education hour.

Be a Stephen Minister

Presently Hosanna has two

Stephen Ministers, myself

and Sandy Henslin. There is

a need for more Stephen

Ministers. I have found it to

be a very rewarding experience. It is an

excellent program, including thorough training

sessions, continued support from our pastor

and Stephen Ministry leader, Ron Machacek,

and an opportunity to support someone who is

going through a difficult time.

As a Stephen Minister, we are a caregiver,

being non-judgmental and also confidential

with our care receiver. Being a good listener,

being empathetic and trustworthy are also

important skills. I have felt honored to remind

those who are hurting of God's continual love

and blessings. It's another opportunity to do

“God's work with our hands!" The skills learned

through the Stephen Ministry training will also

prove helpful in other situations we experience

throughout our lives!

Please contact Pastor Meiers, Ron Machacek,

Sandy Henslin or myself, Mary Dirksen, about

becoming a Stephen Minister.

The Concordia College Chapel Choir will present a

concert at Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester

on Friday, March 20 at 7:30 pm. The choir’s director,

Michael Culloton, lived in Rochester for some time

and knows many people in the community. This choir

homes to house students. Students can stay in

groups of 2 or more in hosts’ homes. Two students

may share a queen sized bed. There will be some with

dietary needs and some will have pet allergies so

hosts will need to note whether they have pets (dogs

March is Minnesota FoodShare Month and Hosanna will host a food and a fund drive. On March

22, we’re going to “Pack the Pews.” We’re asking each family to bring a bag of groceries to place

in their regular “pew” at Hosanna. We’ll be worshiping a little differently that day too. Our fund

drive will last through March 29. Also,

consider working at Hosanna’s Pantry on

March 28 as part of your donation to

March FoodShare Month.

Did you know?:

1 in 10 Minnesotans are food insecure

1 in 6 children in Minnesota are at risk

for hunger

3,700 families are served each month

at Channel One Food shelf (an average

of 25 families are served at Hosanna’s

Pantry each month)

2/3 of families receiving SNAP (or food

stamp) benefits have household

members who are elderly, disabled or

under 18

15% of the food that is distributed in Channel One’s food shelves comes from community

food drives like ours

Every $1.00 donated allows Channel One to provide enough food for 5 meals

Red Cross Shelter Team is Activated! February 1—4

Hosanna’s Red Cross Shelter Team was activated from February 1—4. The shelter was opened

for the purpose of housing and feeding 11 male clients who had been displaced due to an

apartment fire. The shelter was open for 71 consecutive hours, including 3 overnights! 23 shelter

team members logged 260.5 volunteer hours!

The clients were very grateful for our services and they offered to help with daily tasks—such as

light shoveling, sweeping, food set-up, doing dishes, garbage removal and even vacuuming! On

the last day, the clients presented the team with a card with individual thank you’s that read, in

part: You turned our bad situation into a positive one. Thank you. and We all thank you for

opening your doors to a warm bed and great food! Thank you so much.

A big “thank you” goes out to the 23 (out of the 28) shelter team members who were able to

assist during the activation. They are as follows: Barb Anderson, Julie Edvenson, Kelly

Gangelhoff, Keith Johnson, Kristina Johnson, Jane Johnson, Lisa King, Paige Linquist, Laurie

Maidl, Matt McKay, Pastor Bill Meiers, Sonja Meiers, Lisa Nordman, Gene Ohnstad, Kristi Pesch,

Leon Plantz, Barb Schepp, Stephanie Stevens, Bill Weis, Karla Weis, Beth Wiegand, Niel Wiegand,

and Betsy Will. In addition, thank you to John Nicholson, a Red Cross disaster volunteer who is

not a member of Hosanna. John assisted with two of the three overnights. Thanks, also, to Chris

Johnson, Brian Olson, and Paul Anderson who worked together to get a television and laptop

computer set up so that the clients could watch the Super Bowl.

Thank you to the following restaurants that donated food (through the Red Cross chapter):

Canadian Honker, Chipotle, Culver’s, Domino’s Pizza, Noodles, and Perkins. Further, thank you to

the Comfort Inn for allowing the clients to use their shower and laundry facilities.

News About Ann Klavano

As I write this we've been back in the US for 2 1/2 weeks and already memories

are starting to fade. Outside here in Minnesota the temperature is below zero. Just

three weeks ago was I really so hot that I looked forward to bundling up just to go

to the mail box? Did I really say that I could always put on more clothes but I can

only take off so many?

One of the things we were reminded of on our trip was how easy it is for something that we take

for granted to be a really big deal if we lose it. Electricity fits into this category. We rarely lose

electricity at our home here in Rochester, but Senior Flierl Seminary has been having problems for

a couple of months. While we visited Beth's sister, Ann, we lost power several times. It became

common to have no power late at night and many times it went off for an hour or more during the

day and early evening. After we left, Ann reported power off for a couple of days. Electricity is now

more reliable but the potential impact is still there. When the power is out, students end up

spending extra time maintaining pit toilets and fetching water. Class and study time is shifted or

rescheduled to take advantage of available daylight. Refrigeration, fans, lighting and water are all

impacted when the electricity goes off.

Power at the seminary seems to have underlying issues. The local power company, for example,

has trouble affording fuel for generators vs. doing needed repairs. At Senior Flierl they are looking

at medium term solutions such as using a generator at night to light the faculty offices and the

library. Unfortunately the water issues will take major work. It is hoped that eventually some sort

of solar or wind pumps can be used.

Even with power and water issues Senior Flierl Seminary continues to function. In true Papua New

Guinea style a work around is identified and they live with it. Classes have started and about 100

students are now studying to be Lutheran pastors.

Niel and Beth Wiegand

(On March 29 from 9:15 to 10:15 in Hosanna’s quad room, Beth and Niel will talk about their January trip

to visit Pastor Ann, and they’ll present more information about her ministry in Papua New Guinea.)

Hosanna’s Red Cross Shelter Team

Awarded a Certificate of Appreciation!

Melanie Tschida, Red Cross Director, presented

the team with a framed certificate which read:

“Certificate of Appreciation awarded to Hosanna

Shelter Team for showing care and compassion

through the operation of an emergency shelter for

four days for the victims of a multi-unit fire that

occurred on January 31, 2015. We appreciate

the dedication, thoughtfulness, and respect with

From Worship Advocate

Fred Lust

Hello! My name is Fred Lust

and I've been selected to

serve as your Worship

Advocate. My wife Linda and I

came to Hosanna as visitors, having been

invited by friends who were then

members. We were warmly welcomed by

Pastor Howard and found Hosanna to be a

very friendly church family. In the years that

have passed, our feelings have only been

strengthened. We have two adult daughters,

Kim and Gail. Kim now lives in Bangor, Maine

and Gail, the mother of our two

grandchildren, lives in Roseville, MN.

I look forward to serving as your Worship

Advocate and welcome your input, especially

now, during the season of Lent. I still have

much to learn about my new position, so your

help and guidance is very welcome! I pray

that my service as Worship Advocate will

continue to contribute to Worship at Hosanna

which is pleasing to our Lord!

Fred

Thank you to Dave and Janet Wall for sewing

the Lenten banners and to Connie Ness for

creating the designs for the Lenten Series.

Council Summary February 10, 2014

The 425th meeting of Hosanna’s Council was called to order by President Jim Hansen at 7:05 pm on February 10, 2015. Barb Anderson, Ray Ashworth, Jim Hansen and Ron Machacek were in attendance. Also present were Paul Anderson, Alice Kub, Fred Lust and Nancy Wales.

Jim Hansen opened the meeting with a devotion from “God’s Pause” from Luther Seminary using Psalm 50.

Jim presented two names for appointment to the positions of Discipleship Advocate and Worship Advocate. He called Pastor Meiers in Colorado so we could have a quorum to vote on the appointments.

Ron Machacek moved that we approve the appointment of Natalie Sand for Discipleship Advocate and Fred Lust for Worship Advocate to fill the empty positions until the next congregational meeting. Ray Ashworth seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. This is the first time we’ve had open positions going into a new council year and the constitution is not clear on the terms of office for appointments.

Barb Anderson moved that we approve the minutes from the January 2015 council meeting. Ron seconded the motion and it passed. Ron moved that we approve Pastor Meiers report and Ray seconded the motion. It passed.

We discussed the council calendar and talked briefly about if it was needed and how to do it. We decided to use the Hosanna Google calendar and review it each council meeting and add to it when necessary. With new council members there was discussion about changing the times of several of the committee and team meetings that relate to council positions: Worship Planning, Executive Committee, Business and Finance Committee. That will be decided before the next council meeting.

Advocate and staff reports were reviewed. Nancy Wales highlighted the musical and the fun of working with the enthusiastic young people in it. She’s enjoying working on songs for South Pacific for the variety show. She’s also working to find substitute organists for Cynthia McLaren who dislocated her shoulder and will be unavailable for 6 weeks.

Worship planning is going to discuss the summer service times and whether we should just do one service in the summer – so any thoughts are welcome.

Barb highlighted Niel and Beth Wiegand’s visit to Papua New Guinea, the World Hunger appeal being matched by Thrivent, the Bishop’s initiative on food insecurity and Hosanna being highlighted in a video at this year’s Synod Assembly. She’s putting together a family mission trip to Duluth, MN through Youth Works.

Darcy’s report highlighted taking time for planning – how do we want future programming to look.

Paul Anderson said things are going well with finances. Cash flow is most important and being able to pay our bills. The month to month budget isn’t something to be concerned about.

Action Items:

Debt reduction: The Budget and Finance Committee is recommending that we take $30,000 from reserves to pay

toward the mortgage at end of this month. We’d still have $50,000 left in reserves at the end of this month and $66,000 at end of the year if income and expenses trend as projected.

The maturity of the mortgage would be reduced by 8 payments from 104 – 96 and interest saved would be $10,229.

Ron moved and Ray seconded that we take $30,000 out of our reserve fund to make an additional payment on the mortgage at the end of February. Questions during discussion related to the Capital Appeal. Would that mean we could take debt reduction off the list of priorities if we do this? The motion passed unanimously. Winter starts feeling old for me about this time of year. Maybe it is the lost

hope that, this year, the groundhog wouldn’t see his shadow and we would

be free from Elsa’s frozen grip. In any event, we know March is coming with

thaws, blizzards, and all kinds of tournaments. For the church we move into

Lent, which is always a special period of reflection.

Teri and I sent our daughter back to school with a hug and the usual speech

“Study hard and have fun”. I believe college students need to do both. She

was home with us for an internship over January.

I saw the Grammys were on the other night and watched for a little bit. Sometimes I agree with

their winners - sometimes I don’t (usually I don’t care). One winner from the past that I did agree

with was a song called “Baba Yetu”. It is a Swahili version of “The Lord’s Prayer”. If you’re

interested, search for “Hollens Baba Yetu” on the internet and you should find my favorite version

of the song.

Since the Annual Meeting, we have filled two of our advocate positions: thanks to Fred Lust –

Worship Advocate and Natalie Sand – Discipleship Advocate. This leaves us with the Support

Advocate and Nominating Committee positions open, we will continue to pursue these. If you

have interest in these positions please let me know.

The highlights of the month for me were Scout Sunday which brings back a lot of memories

ranging from Cub Scouts and Pinewood Derbies to Eagle Scout projects and everything in

between. However, it is difficult to have anything compare to the variety, dare I say talent, show.

Music – Laughter –Food… all very good (Along with a number of images I may never get rid of. J ).

I would like to thank all those who put it together and those who performed; I know this involves a

lot of work.

Looking forward, everyone needs to put March 15 down as a must attend church day. Hosanna

will present its 24th annual intergenerational musical, “A Technicolor Promise”. I’m sure it will be

great as always.

God Bless,

Jim Hansen

Capital Appeal Three questions were considered: What are the priorities for the capital appeal – at this point they are: erecting the freestanding

cross, fixing the parking lot, benevolence and debt reduction Can we increase the proposed amount of the capital appeal to approximately $250,000 to cover

the full cost of replacing the parking lot? Will we go forward with any components of the appeal before we have the money? Will we take

out a loan?

We talked about the parking lot needs and costs first. Based on previous estimates from the Properties Committee, it would cost approximately $140,000 to completely replace the parking lot. That’s what the Capital Appeal Team is proposing.

It was the consensus of the council that we should set our priorities for the capital appeal, bring in the money, do what we can afford to do and not borrow any money.

There is still approximately $6,000 spent in our 2010 capital appeal that needs to be paid back to the general fund as well.

Dear Members and Friends of

Hosanna,

The scriptural call to

repentance is the overarching

theme of the season of Lent.

Many regard this business of

repentance as they would

their semi-annual visit to the dentist: necessary,

but not fun. Yet, the Bible speaks of the joy of

repentance.

Repentance simply means to turn around, to turn

back, to turn toward home. In England, there is a

paper factory that makes the finest, most

expensive stationary available. A woman touring

the factory asked what it was made from. She

was shown a huge pile of old rags. The rag

content is what determines the quality of the

paper she was told. She couldn’t believe it. But in

six months after her visit, she received a package

of stationary from the company embossed with

her initials. A note included in her order read,

“dirty rags transformed.” This is precisely what

Lent is about…turning our ragged, broken lives

into that which is transformed and new.

Martin Luther wrote of this in his Small

Catechism in reference to our Baptism. What

does baptism mean for daily living?

“It means that our sinful self, with all its evil

deeds and desires, should be drowned through

daily repentance; and that day after day a new

self should arise.”

A famous rabbi was walking with his students

when one of them asked him, “Rabbi, when

should one repent?” The rabbi calmly replied,

“You should be sure to repent on the last day of

your life.’ His student protested that one could

never be sure of the last day of one’s life. The

rabbi answered, “Then it is simple; repent, turn to

the Lord your God today.”

This Lent is a time of reflecting on God’s love for

us and turning toward home. Join with your

Hosanna family of faith in worship, thought and

prayer as we journey together toward the one

who created us, redeemed us in Christ and raises

us daily through our baptism to newness of life.

See you in church. Yours in Christ,

Pastor Bill Meiers

Council Minutes (cont.) Ray moved and Ron seconded the motion that we set the following priorities for the 2015 capital appeal campaign: #1 A new cross, # 2 replace the parking lot, #3 benevolence, and take out debt reduction as a priority.

Discussion included how to define benevolence. We decided to let the Capital Appeal Team do that. The vote on the motion was unanimous.

Ron moved and Jim seconded the motion to set the amount of the capital appeal at $250,000. The motion was unanimously approved.

Barb moved and Fred seconded the motion to let the Capital Appeal Team proceed with carrying out the priorities of the capital appeal only as funds become available. The motion passed unanimously.

There was discussion about putting together a separate group to work on carrying out the priorities of the capital appeal (a new construction committee or the Properties Committee) It was felt that the council and capital appeal team also need to stay involved for checks and balances.

New Business: The council retreat was set for March 10 at

5:30 pm. Jim will send an email to request food items for a supper at the retreat.

We’ll also set a schedule for hosting the council meetings – probably a signup sheet.

Ron moved and Ray seconded that the meeting be adjourned. It passed. The meeting adjourned at 8:33 pm. We closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

Respectfully submitted,

Barb Anderson (for Lou Hermansen) Council Secretary
