You might give consideration to your office décor – which colours to paint the walls, what flooring to put down. You’ll also give some thought to your office furniture – both in terms of it’s practical uses and it’s aesthetic qualities. But what about artwork? It is important? Isn’t it expensive? Isn’t it difficult to chose? The answers are yes, it doesn’t have to be and it doesn’t have to be, by the way!

Why have artwork?

It’s not just a pretty thing or a nice-to-have. Collecting and displaying art in your office creates a meaningful, memorable connection between your business and everyone who walks through your door.

Art touches our emotions in ways that interpersonal communication doesn’t. The emotional qualities evoked by your space, your furniture, and your décor enhance what your clients and customers feel about you and the goods or services you provide. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and when it comes to decorating an office, professionals want those words to speak positively about the environment in which they conduct business.

Artwork might not only be useful in creating a positive impression to your customers/clients who visit your reception area or conference rooms. It can also be used to motivate, engage and communicate to your staff. You/they might not be an art lover. You might even be reading this thinking it’s a load of psychological mumbo jumbo but the fact is, visual prompts are massively powerful. 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual, and visuals are processed 60,000X faster in the brain than text! And photos of loved ones on office desks aren’t really a new thing – so why not expand the concept and create feelings of goodwill amongst all your staff…?

Isn’t it expensive?

Well obviously art can be expensive. Massively so. If you fancy a Paul Cézanne original to grace the walls of your reception area, then it’s going to set your back over £100 million! Even decent sized framed prints can work out at a few hundred pound each. But you don’t have to go out on an extravagant spree to get started. Photographs, prints and posters can be dressed up quite nicely with matting, glass or a frame. Start with one or two, and add something new every year.

How to chose the “right” artwork?

One way to start thinking about what art to purchase is to choose a theme that relates to your business, to your surroundings or to your community interests and values. A theme guides your purchases and gives meaning and impact to your result.

A lawyer’s office, for example, might display photos of famous courts or historic documents. An advertising agency might chose logos or slogans from some of their advertising campaigns.

Photographs of the local area (current or historical ones) plays it quite “safe”, but can be a good place to start. Or perhaps, you have a connection to a local artist and you could use examples of their work. Obviously, you need to avoid anything that’s likely to offend anyone (yup, even the days of seeing Page 3 calendars displayed when I took my car into the garage for it’s MOT are long gone!). That’s not to say that humour can’t play a part. If you’re a very “corporate” company, then funny quotes or memes might not be appropriate (at least not for areas where clients might be), but a business with a more informal feel might be able to get away with it.

In terms of artwork aimed at employees rather than clients, then anything that evokes good memories is likely to motivate staff. Perhaps photo montages of previous work parties (within reason!) or days out might be fun. Or consider motivational quotes or ideas. It might help productivity when staff invariably have the odd moments of wall gazing during their mid afternoon slump!
