We are tremendously excited that North London Collegiate School will be holding its

first ever Arts Festival this year. From Sunday 26th June to Monday 4th July, a great number of concerts, performances, exhibitions and other activities will be taking place, in order to celebrate the creativity and talent of our students, as well as providing further opportunities to explore the wonderful world of the Arts. The Festival contributes to our key aim of providing a broad and stimulating education for our girls in order to develop their skills and confidence, and give them the best preparation for the experiences of adult life.

Singing ConcertOur talented vocalists in the Chandos Singers, students of Mr Caley and selected others will have the honour of opening the School’s first ever Arts Festival.

3pm in the Music School

Belinda & Her IntendedMirroring the rehearsal routines of Shakespeare’s actors, students from Year 10 and Year 11 will have only one full rehearsal to prepare this play written by Deborah Gibbs, Director of Drama. This comedy explores what happens when a family and friends are thrown together to celebrate Belinda’s engagement.

EYear 13 Leavers’ ConcertYear 13 students organise a final farewell concert before they leave NLCS. Items are likely to be wide and varied from classical to contemporary styles.

Annual Gym & Dance DisplayThis innovative and impressive display brings together girls from Years 2 to 13. The show includes gymnastics, dance, cheer-leading and trampolining routines. It is a wonderful opportunity for girls of all ages to perform together. Some of the most exciting pieces have been when a young First School girl performs with the Sixth Formers.

Blink - Year 10 Summer ProductionPhil Porter’s 2012 play, Blink, is the tale of Jonah, Sophie and a fox called Scruffilitis. It’s a love story. A dysfunctional, voyeuristic and darkly funny love story, but still a love story all the same. Year 10 students will experiment with style, and explore the complexities of the characters, Jonah and Sophie, in this thought-provoking and intriguing look at loneliness and love in the 21st Century. Also performed on Thursday evening.

Piano RecitalSelected piano students will be performing their favourite repertoire on the newly purchased grand piano. The evening will also be accompanied by other students offering literary and artistic thoughts which they have selected to reflect the repertoire being performed.

The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe - Year 6 ProductionYear 6 girls have the opportunity to participate in a full-scale production of this famous story in the Performing Arts Centre, consolidating their dramatic and performance skills before moving on to the next stage of their education. The Year 6 Production always proves to be a wonderful way of showcasing their talents as they celebrate the time they have spent in the Junior School.

JULYSummer Fete

The annual Summer Fete is always a hugely popular event and the Parents’ Guild is working tirelessly on preparing a Fete that will thrill and amuse all ages. We are proud to be part of the Arts Festival and very excited to showcase a mix of artistic performances from NLCS students. On offer on the day will be food and drinks, fun and games and some shopping and pampering.

The fete will be open to all family members and friends and is a brilliant way to celebrate a busy school year. Further details will be published in due course by the Parents’ Guild. We look forward to seeing you there.

An Evening with Andrew Graham-Dixon

A major highlight of the Arts Festival, Andrew Graham-Dixon, one of the world’s leading art critics and presenters of arts television, will be presenting a talk on the principles and practice of art appreciation, based on his bestselling book and cult column ‘In The Picture’.

Andrew Graham-Dixon has presented numerous landmark series on art for the BBC. For more than twenty years he has published a weekly column on art, first in the Independent and more recently in the Sunday Telegraph. He has written a number of acclaimed books, on subjects ranging from medieval painting and sculpture to the art of the present.

The evening will also feature an exhibition of artwork by students at GCSE and Sixth Form level, and other art projects created for the Arts Festival.

A concert unlike any other you have seen at NLCS before, this will be a wonderful celebration of the passion for music within the whole school community. Current and former students, staff, parents, friends and family are invited to join a special choir put together for the occasion and sing extracts from Handel’s Messiah, and a group of students will also perform one of Handel’s concerti grossi. Those attending the Gala Music Evening will enjoy a picnic and refreshments in the school grounds, with musical entertainment, prior to the main concert.

EArts Showcase Afternoon & EveningThe climactic event of the whole Arts Festival, a great number of performances and activities will be taking place in several venues around the school, celebrating the Arts in the broadest sense – fiction, poetry, dance, theatre, film, photography, music, architecture, painting, sculpture… and more! Students will be organising and participating in these activities through their societies, clubs and academic subjects, starting in the afternoon and carrying on into the evening.

The full programme will be released nearer the time, but will include: a Korean dance workshop, a modern languages soiree, a dance showcase, a ‘science behind music’ workshop, a ‘play in a day’ produced by the Drama Department, a musical talent show, performances of Shakespeare extracts by Year 7 students, Classical comedy and tragedy extracts, a steel pan workshop provided by our Afro-Caribbean Society, a short film event, workshops on botanical illustration and a performance poetry competition.

Guests will be welcome to attend in the afternoon, but it is anticipated that the evening session will draw large audiences and the programme for the day will be planned accordingly.

This event will not require ticket purchases. We simply invite you to come to the School and enjoy the wide range of performances, workshops and exhibitions. A full programme will be available nearer the time, with details of timings and venues for each activity.

Other Arts Festival Events & ActivitiesIn addition to the events listed above for which you may purchase tickets, the students will be enjoying a number of other projects and activities internally throughout the duration of the Arts Festival.

Year 10 will participate in a Public Speaking Morning, gaining expertise and confidence in the art of rhetoric and speaking in front of an audience. A Summer Symposium will take place for Year 8, giving girls the opportunity to present on an area of specific interest to them. Year 8 girls will also have their theatre trip to see Much Ado About Nothing at the Iris Theatre, Covent Garden, while Year 7 have a Perfoming Arts Jamboree in the Performing Arts Centre.

The Arts Festival will also include Tai Chi classes, short film and photography competitions, new art installations, a creative writing ‘Moth Storytelling’ event, and much more. Academic subjects, from Physics to Economics to Philosophy, will be initiating various projects and areas of study connected to the Arts, in the weeks leading up to the Festival and during the Festival itself. All artwork and displays created for the Festival will be available to view at the Arts Showcase Afternoon & Evening on Monday 4th July.
