SUMMER 2017

Summer at Canary Wharf

Summer is the best time of year to be at Canary Wharf. Enjoy the long evenings at our bars and restaurants as they gear up for a season of al fresco dining and socialising. If that isn’t tempting enough, there’s a packed programme of outdoor entertainment throughout Canary Wharf with theatre, dance, music and sporting events!

Try your hand at padel tennis, beach volleyball, street cycling or enjoy a variety of outdoor wellbeing and fitness classes from Third Space.

Take in the exceptional visual arts exhibitions and try a summer concert – an evening of live music from the sublime London Philharmonic Orchestra or perhaps get some handy gardening tips and advice from the RHS On Tour event.

The Canary Wharf Jazz Festival arrives at Canada Square Park in August and you can also revel in a weekend of live music from the finest British and American country artists in Nashville Meets London.

Add to that outdoor theatre performances, a festival packed with treats for all the family, social painting at outdoor workshops, lunchtime classical music, the monthly Lunch Market plus more – Canary Wharf is busy this summer.

Enjoy!

Kenneth Armitage came to the fore in British Modernism in the 1940s and ‘50s, acclaimed internationally after his sculpture was exhibited in the Venice Biennales of 1952 and 1958. Known for his dynamic clusters of figures and single, often gestural studies, mostly of the female form, he worked largely in bronze. Throughout his career he worked tirelessly, experimenting with new materials and widening the scope of his interests. From the mid-1970s he made early morning visits to Richmond Park, not far from his studio, where he drew the oak trees, revelling in their diversity of form, grouping and individuality. The sculptures in this exhibition derive from these drawings and are in a wide range of scale and form.

Kenneth Armitage: The Oak Tree Sculptures Supported by the Kenneth Armitage Foundation as part of the Centenary Celebration of the Work of Kenneth Armitage CBE RA (1916-2002)

An exhibition of photography and film by Wolfgang Weileder based on his 2016 architectural installation in Montgomery Square, Transfer Laban, during which the façade of the Laban Building was revealed over 2 weeks through a process of construction and deconstruction. The project was recorded using specially constructed photographic cameras and photographic plates exposed for the duration. It was accompanied by dance performances by students at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The next iteration of this project Laban Transferred, presents Weileder’s black & white photographs and time-lapse video on a massive scale, juxtaposed with a new film of dance performance by the same students, created in response to the structure.

SUNDAY 4 JUNE – FRIDAY 30 JUNEMark Ewers

visions_in_pastel

A self-taught artist whose love of art started early, Mark initially tried a variety of different mediums before he turned to pastels. This quickly became his main artistic tool. Pastels can be very messy initially, but that's what he likes about them, from the uncertainty and messiness, beautiful order can be created. “Visions of my Sleeping Travels, is a snapshot of a dream I once had, where all the little blue worms you see were moving on the page...”

SUNDAY 2 JULY – FRIDAY 4 AUGUSTDagur Jonsson gabrielfineart.co.uk

Dagur is an Iceland-based fine art photographer and professional tour operator. “For me photography is a medium through which I want to express feelings and emotions. Subjects such as landscapes with dramatic clouds or captivating sunlight, moody winter scenes, and the beautiful northern lights are of special and personal interest and I photograph these scenes most often.”

SUNDAY 6 AUGUST – FRIDAY 1 SEPTEMBERHedy Parry-Davieshedyparrydavies.com

A practicing conservation architect, Hedy has increasingly turned to creating her own artwork, the two disciplines cross-fertilising to mutual benefit. She combines maps, manuscripts, redundant materials and her own photographs to craft her Tessellations, 3-dimensional constructions that experiment with the tensions between content and form. In her Architexture series she explores buildings with strong textural character.

Sahar Freemantle, one of London’s couture hat designers, specialises in handmade hats for women, each hat blocked and made in the traditional way, although expect occasional unconventional twists! Sahar crafts each hat to create original and unique pieces designed to flatter the wearer. Her creations can be worn to any occasion and her Bridal Collection suits a stylish woman looking for something unique.

SUNDAY 2 JULY – FRIDAY 4 AUGUSTHaya Jahangir Lutfullah

Seeking inspiration from her South Asian culture, Haya uses unconventional techniques to create one-off pieces of jewellery. She uses jewellery as a medium to explore the landscapes of her mind in addition to bridging the gap between traditional South Asian and contemporary jewellery.

SUNDAY 6 AUGUST – FRIDAY 1 SEPTEMBERElena Kurginyan behance.net/elena_kurginyan

Through the meticulous study of hands and their expressive movements, Elena crafts emotive pieces that explore a contemporary dialogue between object and user. The dichotomy between the kinetic quality that our hands possess, and the visual language which we subconsciously but precisely understand, results in a bold and elegant representation of form and subjectivity.

The Changing Seasons project showcases the work of young artists from the Canary Wharf area aged between 4 and 9 years old who attend the DaivaArtStudio, an after-school painting club for kids and adults on the Isle of Dogs. Here they learnt to capture the momentary beauty of ever-changing nature through colour, shading and different painting techniques. Their unique talent and style are strongly evident in each individually expressed painting. Every student at DaivaArtStudio is encouraged to find their authentic creativity through introducing simple rules of composition, working with colour and paint brush techniques. The Changing Seasons is a display of the amazing progress some of these young artists have made in a short period of time.

Millwall is more than just a football club. For well over 100 years it was a major centre for engineering and manufacturing as well as being the location of one of London’s principal docks.

The Friends of Island History Trust is a local group that collects and provides access to images and information about the history of the Isle of Dogs. Their display highlights the importance of Millwall to Britain’s industrial and trading economy long before it became a centre for financial services.
