A group of men travel to the moon by being shot in a capsule from a giant cannon. They are captured by moon-men, escape, and return to the earth. French ambient electronica band Air impart a cosmic touch to the newly restored color edition of George Méliès’ iconic 1902 fil. Technically innovative at the time, Méliès’ masterpiece pioneered the use of trompe l’oeil objects, papier-mâché props and double-exposure to tell the first science fiction tale in cinema. The Extraordinary Voyage Serge Bromberg , Eric Lange France2011DCPColor80min. Interviewed throughout are a number of contemporary French filmmakers, including Jean-Pierre Jeunet, The City of Lost Children (1995) and Amelie (2001); Michel Gondry, director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and The Science of Sleep (2006); Michel Hazanavicius, the recent Academy Award winning director for the silent film tribute The Artist (2011). All of these prove fascinatingly insightful in terms of analysing Melies’s style and artistic technique. World on A Wire Germany1973 / 2010DCPColor206min. Welt am Draht is a 1973 science fiction film directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Shot in 16 mm, it was made for German television and originally aired in 1973, as a two-part miniseries. It was based on the novel Simulacron-3 by Daniel F. Galouye. The story is set in the early 1970s. Its focus is not on action but on sophistic and philosophic aspects of human mind, simulation, and dealing with scientific research and its benefits. In the Dust of the Stars Gofried Kolditz Germany197635mmColor100min. After a six year journey, the Spaceship Cyrno lands on the planet TEM 4. Strangely enough, the Temers deny having sent this message. As commander Akala prepares the spaceship to leave they get an invitation from the rich ruler of TEM 4 to be a part of a lush party. Not only do the opulent food and the seductive dancers cloud their minds, but also the drugs mixed into their food manipulate their consciousness. Only navigator Suko was left behind on the spaceship… On the Silver Globe Andrzej Zulawski Poland1978/198835mmColor166min Three astronauts, decide to leave the Earth and start a new civilization. Landing their spaceship on a desolate planet, they set to work reproducing and end up with a bevy of offspring who grow into a band of fire-worshipping pagans. These folks, who look like extras from THE ROAD WARRIOR, take to worshipping the single surviving astronaut, whom they dub The Old Man, as a God. He in turn gives them a number of rules to live by and then promptly disappears. Vanishing Waves Kristina Buozyte Lithuania, Frence, Belgium 2012DCPColor120min. Have you ever dreamed of being inside the head of another person -- a beloved one or your rival? "Vanishing waves" -- a sci-fi melodrama. Following solid scientific experiment, based on the neural transfer, a young inhibited man will live an astonishing journey in the comatose woman anonymous mind. He is a champion of surrealism for life. His eccentric behaviors have made people back then wonder if he is a creative genius or just a crazy guy. People even will find it is difficult to set standards while making judgments on him. This special exhibition will showcase to people in southern Taiwan an abundance of Dali’s representative works collected by the Stratton Foundation, including a huge size oil painting, monumental and large-size sculptures, small-size sculptures, hand-signed graphics illustrating the great themes of literature, Dali inspired furniture, shimmering glass sculptures, gold ornaments, original collages of the mystical Tarot, and portrait photos of Dali. There are totally over 100 sets of works on display in the exhibition, giving the viewers an opportunity to know more about this seemingly crazy art genius and how he infuses surrealism into the real world. 2012.10.27-28 Exhibition Dates: October 20, 2012 to February 17, 2013 Open daily 9:30 to 17:30 except Mondays, Chinese New Year’s eve and the first day of Chinese New Year Ticket-purchase office hours & location: 09:30-17:00 at Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts Salvador DALÍ / PROFILE OF TIME / h. 150 cm / Bronze / Conceived in 1977, first cast in 1984 / ©I.A.R. A Trip to the MoonGeorges Mélièsfrance│1902 (2011)│dcp│16min.a group of men travel to the moon by being shot in a capsule from a giant cannon. they are captured by moon-men, escape, and return to the earth. french ambient electronica band air impart a cosmic touch to the newly restored color edition of george méliès’ iconic 1902 fil. technically innovative at the time, méliès’ masterpiece pioneered the use of trompe l’oeil objects, papier-mâché props and double-exposure to tell the first science fiction tale in cinema.

The Extraordinary VoyageSerge Bromberg , Eric Langefrance│2011│dcp│color│80min.interviewed throughout are a number of contemporary french filmmakers, including Jean-pierre Jeunet, the city of lost children (1995) and amelie (2001); michel gondry, director of eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (2004) and the science of sleep (2006); michel hazanavicius, the recent academy award winning director for the silent film tribute the artist (2011). all of these prove fascinatingly insightful in terms of analysing melies’s style and artistic technique.

World on A Wiregermany│1973 / 2010│dcp│color│206min.Welt am draht is a 1973 science fiction film directed by rainer Werner fassbinder. shot in 16 mm, it was made for german television and originally aired in 1973, as a two-part miniseries. it was based on the novel simulacron-3 by daniel f. galouye. the story is set in the early 1970s. its focus is not on action but on sophistic and philosophic aspects of human mind, simulation, and dealing with scientific research and its benefits.

In the Dust of the StarsGofried Kolditzgermany│1976│35mm│color│100min.after a six year journey, the spaceship cyrno lands on the planet tem 4. strangely enough, the temers deny having sent this message. as commander akala prepares the spaceship to leave they get an invitation from the rich ruler of tem 4 to be a part of a lush party. not only do the opulent food and the seductive dancers cloud their minds, but also the drugs mixed into their food manipulate their consciousness. Only navigator suko was left behind on the spaceship…

On the Silver GlobeAndrzej Zulawskipoland│1978/1988│35mm│color│166minthree astronauts, decide to leave the earth and start a new civilization. landing their spaceship on a desolate planet, they set to work reproducing and end up with a bevy of offspring who grow into a band of fire-worshipping pagans. these folks, who look like extras from the rOad WarriOr, take to worshipping the single surviving astronaut, whom they dub the Old man, as a god. he in turn gives them a number of rules to live by and then promptly disappears.

Vanishing WavesKristina Buozytelithuania, frence, belgium │2012│dcp│color│120min.have you ever dreamed of being inside the head of another person -- a beloved one or your rival? "vanishing waves" -- a sci-fi melodrama. following solid scientific experiment, based on the neural transfer, a young inhibited man will live an astonishing journey in the comatose woman anonymous mind. this contemporary tale is exploring the nature of desire by exposing links and contradictions between the human body and the mind.

a free, advanced modern city will develop a characteristic style, and kaohsiung film festival, which represents one of the 3 major film shows in taiwan, is considered to be the general index of cinematography in southern taiwan. setting out from the kaohsiung film by the love river, leading us to enjoy this annual artistic banquet, the film exhibition will take place from the 10/19 (fri.) to the 11/4(sun.). it will provide 14 programs for citizens, with over 150 outstanding films from all over the world, which will not only open a magnificent window into the world, and will also represent the spirit of kaohsiung as an ocean city, as well as the passion for cinema possessed its residents.

this year, the kaohsiung film festival will take the “future age” as its theme, in order to bring citizens to reflect on the past, understand the present, and look out on the future; the future of the past is the appearance of life in the present. guided by “future age”, this concept, filled with perspicacity, will bring kaohsiung the first science fiction film, seen as a human cultural relic; the color edition of le voyage dans la lune, directed by georgres melier, to bear witness to cinematic art serving as the creation of the future development of human civilization.

kff short film competition will also enter its second year, less will be more once again, a total of 459 films from 41 countries will take part in the ceremony. the level of the films entered in this year’s newly-designed “kaohsiung award” is extremely high, which represents the fact that kaohsiung’s policy of encouraging the creation of short film has received international recognition. the green short competition are also very eager, and citizens will be able to dig out all kinds of environmental themes through such short films, which will serve as a great industrial achievement for kaohsiung. as climate change progresses, how can the city become resident-friendly?

Salvador DALÍ (1904-1989), an artist with a handlebar mustache, is the most eye-catching and controversial master of surrealist art since the 20th century. There are totally over 100 sets of works on display in the exhibition, giving the viewers an opportunity to know more about this seemingly crazy art genius and how he infuses surrealism into the real world.

salVaDor DalÍ, minD oF Geniussalvador dalÍ (1904-1989), an artist with a handlebar mustache, is the most eye-catching and controversial master of surrealist art since the 20th century. he is a champion of surrealism for life. his eccentric behaviors have made people back then wonder if he is a creative genius or just a crazy guy. people even will find it is difficult to set standards while making judgments on him. this special exhibition will showcase to people in southern taiwan an abundance of dali’s representative works collected by the stratton foundation, including a huge size oil painting, monumental and large-size sculptures, small-size sculptures, hand-signed graphics illustrating the great themes of literature, dali inspired furniture, shimmering glass sculptures, gold ornaments, original collages of the mystical tarot, and portrait photos of dali. there are totally over 100 sets of works on display in the exhibition, giving the viewers an opportunity to know more about this seemingly crazy art genius and how he infuses surrealism into the real world. salvador dalÍ / prOfile Of time / h. 150 cm / bronze /

JoHn tHomson winDow to tHe east: tHe Journey to Formosa, CHina anD soutHeast asia 1865-1871in 1871, John thomson captured the images of ta-kow (takao/dagou, now kaohsiung) harbour via his camera on his trip to formosa (taiwan), leaving us beautiful early photographic records of kaohsiung. through his camera lens, the oriental and poetic images of ta-kow port against a vast sky and ocean demonstrate a type of unique rhetoric of image aesthetics. this exhibition mainly displays a total of 250 photographic works by thomson of formosa, china and southeast asia, allowing viewers to travel back in time and to experience the unique cultural and social facets of asia over 100 years ago. in addition to capturing the micro-history of asia, the works also reflect thomson’s unique viewpoints and emotional responses when he first encountered the exotic Oriental cultures rich in historical profoundness and inner serenity after thousands of years of development.

FloatinG imaGes: art oF CHen sHui-tsaireputed as one of the three important art critics of kaohsiung, chen is a heavyweight figure in the artistic circle in southern taiwan. his profound and precise art critiques play a pivotal and influential role in the development of modern art in kaohsiung in the 1990s. chen is not an aloof recluse living away from people. living in the city, he participates in events but keeps a distance for objective observation. his insights into the social environments are not only reflected in his writing but also in his artistic creations. in the invitation to his first solo exhibition in 1981, he wrote: “the land decides the types of plants that can grow on it and hence the fruits that the plants bear. When i focus on the land where we live, i am no longer restrained by the differences of traditional, modern, eastern and western arts. my art is the presentation of my truest feelings about the land.” 30 years later, this statement can still suitably epitomize chen’s concepts about his art. this exhibition displays over 100 of chen’s works representative of different periods, featuring his whole artistic career with unprecedented comprehensiveness. chen shui-tsai / human head 1994-07 / 150×150cm / acrylic and ink on canvas / 1994 /

Forum For CreatiVity in art into soCiety: CritiCal realism in taiwanese pHotoGrapHiC arts sinCe 1990amidst the changing and transition of the concept of photography over the past years, the development of realistic photography in taiwan took a direction drastically different from traditional photography. photographers today in taiwan have expanded the realm of “photographic arts,” taking interest in a more diversified variety of themes and using more energetic and experimental expression forms. some photographers have worked individually on long-term photography projects; some have cooperated on teamwork projects. curated by may-ling chang, this exhibition showcases the works by 27 realism photography artists/groups in taiwan. the works are critical representations of and in-depth reflections upon different social and cultural facets of taiwan through the creative rhetoric of the artists.

WHEN SPACES BECAME EVENTS….DispositiF oF moDernity in tHe 1980s, taiwanthrough this exhibition, the curator, Wang pin-hua, intends to go back to the 1980s from the 21st century and relive the memories of people taking to the street in taiwan and review all the experiments and controversies in the realm of arts back then. this exhibition can inspire us to rethink if the so-called “public space” in the 80’s is really a result of the mass movement and alternative media development. it can also make us wonder whose history is represented through the “events” caused by the involvement of art in society. the exhibition showcases works by artists of different generations using different creative media, such as richard lin, tsong pu, cheng yenping, hu kunjung, chang yung-tsun, chen hsingwan, yeh chu-sheng, and lai tsun-tsun. in addition, there are also documents and records in the exhibition that witness how the social and spatial changes before and after the 80’s have played a key role in the transitions of art concepts in taiwan. 1990 u-theatre "the colorful streams floor sweep", ponghu

── Federico Fellini

"Life means only one thing to me : to make a movie." ── Michelangelo Antonioni

"I love melodrama, because it’s right in the middle situation between life and theater."
