Quincy JonesMusic legend supports youth
Claude NobsSharing the joy of music
Quincy Jones is a musician, composer and musicproducer with a long and distinguished career.Throughout his life, Jones has supported African-
American culture and young peopleoften opening doors thathad been closed in the past. Among his many achievementsis We Are the World, the best-selling single recording of alltime.
Jones founded the Listen Up Foundation in 1991 to breakthe cycle of poverty and violence by connecting children witheducation, technology, culture, and the roots and fruits ofmusic. The foundation supports programs that meet thecritical needs of childrenhealthcare and education. ListenUp works with local programs that are capable of a globalreach.
I feel that there is a wealth of untapped greatness in theyounger generation that needs a jump start to come forth,Jones says. I see young kids giving up. They dont think theycan live past 25. Its a ray of hope when they realize they canexpect more from their lives.
Claude Nobs has a passion for sharing his love of music.Nobs also loves his home region, in and around
Montreux, Switzerland. His love of music and hislove of home came together in 1967 when Nobs producedthe first Montreux Jazz Festivalwhich celebrates its 40th
Anniversary in 2006.
Over the years, the festival has grown to include jazz andmuch morefrom Flamenco to Hip Hopattracting seasonedprofessionals as well as young musicians who take part inevents and competitions that inspire their development.
The festival is now one of the worlds biggest entertainmentsevents, with more than two weeks of virtually nonstopmusic, attracting more than 200,000 visitors. With artists
workshops, exhibits on the United Nations peace efforts, andperformances that bridge gaps between nations and cultures, the Montreux Jazz Festival has become a world-renownedcenter where musicians demonstrate the international powerof music.
To me, Nobs says, jazz means an instinctive emotionalsharing, an improvisational freshness. But my biggestpassion is to share all this. Sharing is essential. Thats whatthe festival is all aboutsharing the music while it happensand preserving it for the future.
