About

Letter from Art4TH Founder, Johnna Crider

Nulla vestibulum eleifend nulla.

Dear friends and supporters:

I would first like to thank you for reading this report and alsothank you for the support through the years. In 2005,Art4TheHomeless, lovingly abbreviated Art4TH, was just anidea to open up an art gallery that would sell art and give moneyto homeless shelters. I had no idea how I was going to do that.Fast forward seven years later, I find myself humbled and inawe at how everything has come together so perfectly so far.

We are still on our journey, but it’s more than just me. I have myfriend Samantha Medd, who came up with the name:Art4TheHomeless, I have my friend Hart Deer, whose businessexpertise was so incredible that I stepped down from CEO. I feltHart would be a much better CEO since I am more passionateand creative. Business is simply not my forte. I would also liketo thank all of our current Board of Directors and Leaders whohave stepped up and said, “What can I do to help your dreamcome true?” They are as follows: Denise Thompson, YvetteDubel, Mitsah Henry, Lakesha Johnson, Eric McGlothen, SonyaBrock, Peggy Hill, Travis Jones, and Keith Lancaster. I encour-age you, my readers, supporters, and friends to get to knowthese awesome individuals who stepped up to my side to helpshape Art4TheHomeless into not just a dream, but an organiza-tion that will continue to make an impact on many lives.

You may ask, why Art4TheHomeless? Well, I am an artist so,naturally, that’s why! During the yearsI’ve discovered that I love promoting other artists and makingnew friends across the internet. Creating the Art4TH Webzinewas one of my best ideas yet: an online magazine that focuseson both the arts and awareness.

Homelessness is an issue close to my heart. I’ve been there.I’ve been that person sleeping under a bridge and waking upcold and frightened. I’ve first experienced homelessness when Iwas nine years old. It was on my 10th birthday that my motherand I were kicked out of our trailer in White, GA. My mother hedecided to drive west until she ran out of gas. We wound up inShreveport, LA and stayed at the Providence House, formerlyknown as the Evergreen House. They were in the process ofchanging their ways of helping the homeless and it is now a sta-

ple in the Shreveport, LA community. My mother and I were the10th Graduates of the Providence House’s program to breakthe cycle of homelessness.

I’ve noticed that so many people have a negative viewpoint to-wards homelessness. They say, “Go get a job,” but I have newsfor you. I couldn’t get a job –- it was against the law and it stillis. Which law? Child Labor Laws, of course. So, to bring up themajor issue is to create awareness, to tell those who scorn thehomeless that they are people who seriously need your loveand support; not hate.

I invite you to join me in this mission. Help us reach our goals, and if you can’t help us, then reach out to your local homelessshelters and help them. I’ve received letters asking why I shouldreceive money and not a shelter. Let me make this clear to you:I personally do not receive a dime of monies donated toArt4TheHomeless. I always encourage anyone to donate toArt4TheHomeless but also if they are more inclined to donate totheir local homeless shelters, then do so. And be sure to sendus the names of those shelters so we can promote them.

We are all in this together so let’s do more than just donatingmoney to help the homeless. Let’s take a stand and rise up. Letour voices be heard through art, poetry, music, dance, and the-atre and express our discontent with the way that things are.Let us make a change even if it’s only one person at a time.Let’s unite to do more than promote homelessness awareness:let’s unite to make a difference in the lives of our fellow humanbrothers and sisters.

Sincerely,Johnna CriderArt4TH Founder/Vice President & Chairman of the Board

2012 was a year for expanding growth forArt4TheHomeless. We kicked off 2012 with abang at the 2011 Solstice Guitar ApocalypseFood and Clothing Drive that was sponsoredby Chicago’s Nancy’s Pizza in Buckhead At-lanta. We had a very low attendance but forthose who came, and for their customers,Art4TH CEO, Hart Deer, put on a one-manshow for everyone. We managed to get a fewarticles of clothing that were donated to Cov-enant House of GA.

Our next event was a partnership with Atlan-ta’s May Day Coalition where they celebratedMay Day and gave Art4TH Founder JohnnaCrider a spot to host a workshop about jobloss as a cause of homelessness.

Vision & MissionImagine...a movement inspired by thearts to open the eyes of Americans tothe plight of their own people. Imagine, through art, music and poetry, we areshining a much needed light on our owncrisis: HOMELESSNESS

Misson

The Mission of Art4TheHomeless is tounite the arts to provide support for andawareness of non-profit US homelessshelters, to provide support for artistsinvolved with the Corporation, to providea space where the artists of all disci-plines can create and participate in orga-nizational sponsored activities andprograms working to raise awareness ofhomelessness. The organization willhost and promote activities for the inte-gration of those presently and previouslyhomeless and to assist in the locating ofhomeless resources and supportive ser-vices in the United States.

History

In 2005/2006 Art4TheHomeles startedout as a blog by Johnna Crider, who be-came homeless after being evicted fromher home. The blog was called Colors ofInk, which was a pay-to-blog—that neverpaid out the money. All the money beingaccumulated was going to be donated to

various homeless shelters, but Colors ofInk shut down due to Blogcharm, thehost, not being able to pay bloggers topay. Ms. Crider then began another blogon Nutang, which was also a pay-to-blog; it also shut down the payment sys-tem so no money was made for Art4THfrom either blog. By 2007, Ms. Criderhad set up the account with Zazzle.comusing her artwork to raise money forhomeless shelters. She donated the roy-alties, which always amounted less than$30, to various homeless shelters.

In 2008 – 2009, Ms. Crider started plan-ning her dream: to set up a non-profitorganization that would benefit artists ofall disciplines while helping promotehomelessness awareness and providingassistance to the homeless population ofthe U.S. Art4TheHomeless was legallyincorporated on October 9, 2009 andMs. Crider began the long task of fund-raising to help cover the IRS filing fee.

She began hosting a webzine that fea-tured numerous artists and musicians.Donations came in and the Art4TH teamfiled in early 2011. On November 4,2011 (Johnna Crider’s birthday!) the IRSrecognized Art4TheHomeless, Inc., as a501(c)3 non-profit organization.
