The Brooks BASE Program is a community balance program that is designed to maintain and improve balance. By utilizing a harness system, members will be able to challenge their balance safely and independently. Member-specific balance circuits are designed for each program member by a physical therapist; these individualized circuits are deter- mined by completing a formal physical therapy evaluation and re-assessment. Fall prevention programs, especially those that incorporate dynamic balance, dynamic gait, and strengthening, have been shown to effectively reduce fall risk by up to 40%.6, Often times, pa-tients are not referred for fall prevention programs or balance training in physical therapy (or in some cases referred back to physical therapy) until after falls have already occurred. The Brooks BASE Program is designed to satisfy the aforementioned criteria and is in line with the CDC’s current rec-ommendation of at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of physical activity per week11. This program is specifically tailored to the participants involved and is created to challenge a participant’s balance beyond what he or she could do safely at home or in a gym. Throughout the monthly re-assessments, we expect to see reduction in fall risk as measured by standard subjective and objective static and dynamic balance measures including the Activities Specific Balance Confidence Scale, Functional Gait Assessment, BERG Balance Scale, and Timed Up & Go. We also expect to see improvements in gait speed and functional lower extremity strength/power as indicated by the 6 Meter Walk Test and 5 Time Sit to Stand Test.
