Women’s PROFILE and FOCUS March Radio Special

Coming up on 8 & 9 March tune into 4EBFM 98.1 for a special one (1) hour feature on Mental Health related issues amongst culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) adolescents and Non-English speaking women, girls and families in and around Brisbane. The radio documentary ti-tled, ‘How do I cope’ will be first aired on Focus on Thursday 8 March at 12noon, coinciding with International Women’s Day and then again on Friday at 12noon-during Women’s Profile will explore the issues surrounding one’s men-tal health. The feature length program funded by the Queensland Govern-ment and supported by YWCA Queensland is being produced by Women’s Profile Broadcaster, Maureen Mopio together with 4EB. “How do I cope, will bring

unique voices, unheard voices of women, girls and families in our communities, to empower, enrich and evoke thoughts on a health issue that is swept under the car-pet in some cultures,” She said. Hear the voices of experts in the field, such as Brisbane Psy-chologist, Ana Borges, who will look into the stigmas associated with this issue and encourage one and all to have the conversation. 4EB Broadcaster, Maureen Mopio said “it’s important to bring more voices from ethnic, multicul-tural backgrounds to just have a chat because in some cultures, talking about Mental Health is a taboo, not to be discussed or ad-dressed in the public forum,” The program will feature an interview with ‘Elizabeth’ (first name given only) who talks about her experience going through do-

mestic violence and has been told repeatedly that she has a “mental health problem” even though she has been diagnosed otherwise. “This type of stigma will be brought to the discussion table in this upcoming radio documentary, ”How do I Cope”, for all to listen to and learn,” she said.

Serbian News

Lithuanian News Lithuania celebrates a cen-tenary of the Restoration of the State.

Brisbane Lithuanian community at the Father Bacinskas Lithuanian Club cele-

brated its 100th anniversary of the res-toration of Lithuanian Statehood. On

February 16, Lithuanians celebrated

the birth of modern Lithuania. In 1918,

an independent, modern state of peo-ple was established, which had to be

ruled by a democratically elected gov-ernment. It also had to symbolically

revive Lithuanian statehood tradition

that was upheld in 1253-1795. The building of the modern Lith-

uanian state in 1918 was based on the

principles of the equality of all, as well

as the freedom and prosperity, and this is why all the people of the country

and Lithuanians living abroad, have chosen to be free, for the first time in

the history of Lithuania became the

creators of their state, and later on, during the years of the occupation, the

guardians of its tradition.

Ranko gladly accepted the position signing the Am-bassador’s agreement and receiving a special certifi-cate. The group also offered gifts before celebrating with an afternoon tea and photo session. Ranko Cosic was also a special guest on the Serbian Radio program.

Last month I talked about the proce-

dures for playing sponsorships on-air in live and pre-recorded programs and

yet we still continue to find that some broadcasters are still not sure on how

this works. If there is anyone in your group who broadcasts or is a panel

operator but only doing a few pro-

grams a year they still need to know how this system works. Playing the

sponsorships in your programs is a very important revenue stream to Ra-

dio 4EB and also GLOBAL Digital. We

do, however, acknowledge the difficul-ty in locating the sponsorships for

GLOBAL programs for the moment until a second screen is installed in the

Digital Studios.

This month I would like to re-mind all broadcasters about Mic Tech-

nique in the studio. On listening across the station to several different pro-

grams it seems broadcasters are for-getting to use the Mic correctly by not

being positioned in front of the Mic.

Using a Mic correctly in the studio as a broadcaster or a guest is important for

the sound of your program and even more importantly for the listener. Re-

member if the listener cannot hear the

program properly they are likely to switch off or tune in again at some

other time. During the broadcast sessions

and also again during the panel train-ing courses I instruct new people on

how to use the studio Mics effectively.

I demonstrate good Mic technique and also show broadcasters how to use the

Mic in an interview situation with a guest. Remember, it is the panel oper-

ator who must check that the Mics are

set correctly for the broadcasters and also the guest in the studio. It is also

the responsibility of the panel operator to check that all headphones are work-

ing as part of their studio check before

going to air. As a general rule you need to

place the Mic in front of you and only be a short distance away (Maybe a

pen length). The studio Mics are not really suitable to be shared between 2

or 3 broadcasters so you may have to

decide who is going to talk and move into the MIC as required.

Good Mic technique is important in any studio and when it sounds good

your listeners will be happy as well.

Letter of Thanks from Radiothon

winner - Brian Mathews who col-lected 2nd prize A food voucher

for Mega Continental Deli.

“When I first arrived at their ware-

house, I was treated with the utmost

friendship and courtesy by Helen. She

extended the same welcome to my

driver and we wandered around the

many lines of shelves holding the

greatest variety of goods. Helen’s

time and attention were graciously

given. Because of my situation, I

would never have been able to use

such a generous amount of goods.

However, with the cooperation and

understanding of Helen, and the com-

pany, I have been able, along with my

friendly driver to organise distribu-

tion of the selection of the $400 worth

of produce to a charity group who

help destitute , needy people of Bris-

bane. The selected goods were taken

last Friday (Feb 2) and will bring

comfort and sustenance to many”.

Always nice to receive good feedback from our winners on the collection of

major Radiothon Prizes and our spon-

sors. Thanks Brian, Your letter was very

much appreciated by us all at 4EB.
