SHAKESPEARE GILD BRIDGE GILD Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous and most often referred to of Shakespeare s works, forming the basis of any number of films, books, and at least one Broadway musical. The tragedy of the two lovers, however, is not the whole story. The play is not only about two young people who fall madly in love at first meeting, but about the strained and contentious world in which they live. Shakespeare begins the play by telling us what will happen and why. It is a warning to us all, even in our own time, of what happens when families and communities allow hatreds and ancient grudgesto govern our actions and how young people get caught up in these arguments to the destruction of all. Director Katie Donovan is applying her many talents and expertise to a new and expansive production of Romeo and Juliet. Katie has gathered a multi-generational cast to play the roles for which they are suited by age and character. She has also turned to more intricate production values without losing the rustic charm of the Field Theater. Come experience this new and exciting production of Shakespeare under the stars in June. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays, June 14, 15, 21, and 22 at 8 pm; Wednesday and Thursday, June 19 and 20 at 7 pm; and Sunday matinee June 16 at 6 pm, Outdoors at The Frank Stephens Memorial Theater in Arden, Delaware on the Arden Village Green. If using GPS navigation use this address for the theater: 2310 Woodland Lane, Arden, DE 19810. In case of rain, performances will be at Arden Gild Hall, 2126 The Highway. Arden DE 19810. For tickets: ardenshakes.com. $12 general admission; $10 for Arden Club members, seniors & students; and $5 for children 12 and under. All tickets for the 6 PM Sunday performance are $7. CONCERT GILD

Kat Edmonson

On Sale Now!

Saturday, October 19, 2019 - 8 PM | $30 General | $25 Members

Tickets by email via [email protected] for members.

Edmonson is already well established as an old soul; she'd have that reputation even without her recent contribution to Café Society, the Woody Allen rom-com set in 1930s Hollywood. Her previous three albums all exude a twinkly throwback charm, whether in jazz-cabaret or folksy indie-pop mode. She was, briefly and incongruously, a contestant on the second season of American Idol, where her vintage, soft-spoken style caused befuddlement among the judges.

JUNE 2019 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR 3

ARDENSINGERS GILD

Christmas at the Tower

Auditions: June 23 & 25, 2019 (adult roles)

Young Actors: Group auditions in September

Shows: Fri. Dec. 6 & 13 at 8pm, Sat. Dec. 7 & 14 at 2pm

It's 16th Century London, and the town is in a festive mood! Join us for the celebrations, with traditional songs and dance, processions, folk plays, mischief, an unexpected wedding, and general merry-making, all intended to chase the dark winter away! In our mummers play, St. George will, once again, be protecting England from fearsome beasts and foreign foes, with Father Christmas, the learned doctor, the fool, and many others in attendance. (I'm told that tales of Robin Hood, a puppet show, and a children's game are also possibilities.) Actors, both young and old, will be taking part in the celebrations. Auditions for adult roles, and for new chorus members, are scheduled for Sun. June 23 and Tues. June 25 from 7 - 10pm in the Lower Hall. To schedule one or more ten minute audition slots, please contact John Newport at (610) 388-7680 or [email protected]. In addition to the named roles, there will also be opportunities for soloists, ensemble singing, and bits of dialog. Character descriptions and links to audition dialog and music are available from the www.ardensingers.org website. Updated information concerning the show contents, including a plot-line summary, and links to scripts, music recordings, and videos are also on the website. Current Ardensingers chorus members are not required to audition, but are asked to contact us to confirm their intent to participate in the show.

Young actor auditions will be informal, group auditions in September, involving readings from the folk plays, and there's an expectation that all young actors will be cast. The young actor roles do not require singing (although they're certainly welcome to participate in the musical parts of the program, too). So that our directors can get a feel for how much material to plan for the young actors, we ask that you E-mail us soon at [email protected], or call John Trexler at (484) 319-2350, to let us know if you have kids who may be interested in participating.

Rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons from 2 - 4:30pm and Tuesday evenings from 7:30 - 10pm, starting in mid-September. (Young actor rehearsals will mostly be on Sunday afternoons. If called on Tuesday, they'd be released by 9pm.)

We're having a lot of fun planning for the celebrations, and hope you'll come out to experience the fun in December!

Gilbert & Sullivan's: Princess Ida

Auditions: Late August or early September

Shows: April 24 - May 2, 2020

Princess Ida tells the hilarious tale of a princess and prince whose marriage was arranged when they were infants. Prince Hilarion has been waiting 20 years to meet his bride, but learns instead that Princess Ida will not honor the commitment, and has gone off to start a women’s college. In an attempt to woo her, Hilarion and two companions dress up as maidens and sneak into the school. Violence between the two families looks certain, but true love prevails!

LIBRARY GILD

The library will be open Sunday afternoons (2:30 – 4), Wednesday evenings (7:30 – 9) and Thursday afternoons (3 – 4:30). The Saturday evening hours will resume with the new Dinner Gild season in October.

We do have a new service we hope those of you who need it you will take advantage of, “Book Pals” will deliver the book or books of your choice if you can’t get to the library on your own. Call Elizabeth (475-1098) for more information.

The Arden Writers' Gild, in conjunction with The Arden Club, gathers on the second Tuesday of every month at 7P.M. for a two hour mini-retreat. We meet in The Arden Gild Hall Library. Our casual and inclusive family is open to anyone looking to be inspired by the power of words. Our small group format encourages dialogue and sharing without criticism. We do not critique work; instead, we use our stories and poems (or stories and poems by authors we love) to launch discussions about life and our common humanity. You don't have to be a writer to join our family, just be willing to listen respectfully and to respond in positive and affirming ways to those who choose to share. Hope to see you soon! Warm cookies are provided as an added incentive.
