Printed on 100% post-consumer fiber paper.
Have fun! Listen to great music! Celebrate! The Arden Fair was originally conceived as a farewell to summer, in the days when
Arden’s population shrank perceptibly after Labor Day. Today the Fair is the Arden Club’s premier fund-raiser of the year, the
proceeds going to the maintenance of Gild Hall and to our many activities.
Calls for Volunteers
Our biggest event of the year is coming soon and we need your help!
Volunteering is both fun and rewarding. It takes over 500 volunteers to make
the Fair a success each year.
There are lots of volunteer opportunities. During the Fair on Saturday
September 5, we need cashiers for 1-2 hours at the Club booths such as
Antiques, Books, Cakes, Finance, etc. In addition, it takes lots of people on
"Set-Up Day" (Friday September 4) to put up booths and decorate. On "Take
-Down Day"(Sunday September 6) we need lots of volunteers to disassemble
the booths and clean up. We provide dinner on "Set-up Day" and breakfast
on "Take-Down Day" to our volunteers.
Come be part of the fun. It is a great community-building event where you
get to know new people or catch up with people you don't get to see often
enough. This is also a multi-generational team with volunteers ranging from
age 4 to age 90+.
If you want to stay at home instead, cook us some sugar goodies and drop
them off 12:00 – 8:00 PM Friday in the Upper Gild Hall – someone will be
there to receive them or you may drop them off by 8:00 AM on Fair Day at
the Moonlight Theater. Please include your name and a description of your
dessert on your donation.
Remember, the proceeds from the Fair help to provide services for those
inside and outside of Arden. To volunteer, send an email to
Please volunteer to help! Thanks!!

Fall 2015 – Panto of the Opera
Auditions have been held and the major leads have been cast for our fall show, “Panto

committee, should e-mail us at [email protected], or phone John Trexler at
(484) 319-2350.
Rehearsals will be held Tuesday evenings from 7:30-10:00 and Sunday afternoons from 2:00-4:30, starting with our kick-off on

Volunteers Needed for the Arden Fair
The Ardensingers will again be hosting the Beer & Wine Booth at the annual Arden Fair on Saturday, September 5. Volunteers are
needed to work in 2-hour shifts from 10 AM to 6 PM. We welcome current, past, or prospective Ardensinger members. If you would
like to sign up for a shift, please contact John Trexler at [email protected] or by phone at (484) 319-2350. We always have a
good time in the Beer & Wine booth!
Ardensingers Annual General Meeting
Our Ardensingers Annual General Meeting, usually held in June, is being moved to coincide with the kickoff of our fall show on
Sunday, September 13. We will start with lunch at 1:00 PM, begin the meeting at 1:30, and then plan to start our rehearsal by 2:30.
All past, current, and future members are encouraged to join to hear a recap of the past year, vote on new Board members and
proposed changes to the by-laws, and discuss plans for the future. We hope to see you there!
Spring 2016 – H.M.S. Pinafore Auditions
We will be holding auditions for lead roles and new chorus members for our Spring 2016 show, Gilbert and Sullivan’s, “H.M.S.
Pinafore,” on Thursday, September 17 from 7-10 PM and Sunday, September 20 from 6:30-9:30 PM at the Arden Gild Hall. To
schedule an audition, please contact Nicole Servais by e-mail (preferred) at [email protected] or phone at (302)750-4687.
Additional information, including descriptions of the main roles and links to audition music and dialog are available at
www.ardensingers.org.
Rehearsals will be held Tuesday evenings from 7:30 – 10 PM and Sunday afternoons from 2 - 4:30 PM, starting in late
January. Performance dates are April 22, 23, 29, and 30, 2016 at 8 PM, and April 24 and April 30, 2016 at 2 PM. Stage direction by
Sam Griffin, music direction by Helene Furlong.
Drummer’s Circle
The Arden Drummer’s Circle, sponsored by the Concert Gild, meets every third Sunday of each month at 1 PM (generally running
about 2 hours or so). Beginners and professionals alike are invited to join with us. We often play some common rhythms and then
we improvise. Bring a drum or two, and/or percussion instruments. In fair weather, we meet outdoors of the Gild Hall, but in cold or
rainy weather we move into the Lower Gild Hall. We also sometimes have one or two evening events during the year that often take
the place of the monthly event.
To join the e-mail list, send an e-mail to Allan Kleban, [email protected]. People on this list will be notified by e-mail if times
or dates change, or if another performance in the Upper Gild Hall prevents us from playing. Also see our Facebook site, Arden
Drum Circle, for more information.

CUMBIA ALL STARS with special guest Travel Songs

$20 members $25 guests
They come from the legendary bands of Peruvian Cumbia and, after 40 years, they meet again to play finally
together the music they participated in creating ! Few musical styles have been so unanimously popular as
Cumbia in Peru. Planting its roots at the capital's suburbs among the children of immigrants and in remote cities
of the Amazonian Jungle, its mesmerizing melodies have been in the air for more than forty years.
Travel Songs is a group of musicians based in Delaware and Brooklyn who play world-inspired indie music.
Most recently, they teamed up with a group of filmmakers to create a documentary about music and culture in
Cusco, Peru.
LOWER DENS with special guest Abdu Ali
Friday, October 2 - 8:30 PM
$10 members $12 guests
Ribbon Music is pleased to announce the return of Baltimore's Lower Dens with their third album, Escape from
Evil, on which Jana Hunter emerges: cerebral and hot-blooded, rash and
incorruptible, and, crucially, in possession of a loud, clear voice.
Rooted in the ghettos of Baltimore, Abdu Ali raps, sings, and chats over unorthodox sounds, creating music
that's green, provoking, and quenching.
WELCOME!
We wish you a happy, restful summer.
We play in the Bratten Room of the Lower Gild Hall on August 6 and September 17.
The cost is $1 for Arden Club members and $3 for non-members.
SEE YOU THERE!!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Gild Hall Renovations Fundraising Update
Our campaign is going well but we still need more donations to reach our goal of $160,000. Our final renovations cost estimate is
$250,000: $200,000 for the kitchen and $50,000 for Lower Hall. Replacing many rotted floor joists plus the State requirement to
build a big service platform on the roof for the hood exhaust system increased the cost. Because we are considered to be a restaurant,
we have to adhere to many regulations that have added a lot of expenses to the project.
We have raised $150,000 thus far and we have consolidated our mortgages with Arden Building and Loan so that we will be able to
pay for the project to completion. We do need more donations so that we can reduce our debt as soon as possible. If we do not pay
down our mortgage, we will likely pay $200,000 in interest over 30 years for our $165,000 mortgage. We have the right to pre-pay
and we would like to reduce the balance by $15,000 by year-end. We plan to keep paying extra on the mortgage every year until it is
paid off early.
Thanks to Cynthia Dewick & David Gerbec for hosting the wonderful “Night in White” fundraiser at their home on July 11.
Everyone had a great time and we raised $2,200 for the kitchen renovations!
Here are donors who are helping make our needed renovations a reality:

Renovations Construction Update as of July 13
In Lower Hall, the underlayment boards are in place and the floor is ready for hardwood flooring to be installed in August. In the
kitchen, the underlayment is in and the framing for the walls is complete. The plumbing and electrical
lines are almost done. We expect that the range hood and fire suppression system along with the exhaust system on the roof and
service platform will begin shortly. The last steps will be the drywall; ceiling, including lighting, and the flooring. Finally, we will
move the kitchen equipment back in along with the new kitchen equipment which is now in storage in the Hall.
The project is on schedule with planned completion before the Arden Fair.

Training for the Cooks
As most of us know, the Lower Gild Hall and kitchen are under construction as is the Dinner Gild! With new
equipment and efficient ways to cook, come new menus and service. Dinner Gild is planning cooking classes from
local chefs, demos and hands-on classes, tastings, and wine pairings. Look for postings and fun events in the future.
Plans are to help Lead cooks and food preparers through various steps from shopping and storage, Friday’s prep,
and Saturday service. As always, the Dinner Gild managers are here to help. Dates for this training will be offered
to cooks prior to your scheduled dinner on Sundays in the kitchen.
As we near a new season of Saturday night dinners, remember September 15 will be the time to renew your
reservations. We will not have a dinner on Halloween night, but rather a Sunday breakfast the next morning. Sign
up now! A new schedule for lead cooks is forming. Lead cook scheduler, [email protected] to book your
dates now.

September 5, 2015. The Gardeners Gild seeks contributions of potted plants, bulbs, etc. Donations should be dropped
off on Friday, September 4, by 7:00 PM at the Gild Hall. Kindly provide an identification label stating what kind of

September Program: Monarch Butterflies
The Gardeners Gild will meet on Monday, September 21, at 7:30 PM in the Lower Gild Hall. We are pleased to present as our
speaker Diana Kadash, who will present to our group on the loss of Monarch Butterfly habitats, including milkweed and other nectar
sources. Diana will also discuss how we can all participate in the restoration of these habitats by establishing Monarch Waystations,
which are designed to offset the losses of the milkweed and other nectar sources necessary for the success of the Monarch Butterfly
migration and for their long-term survival.
Diana Kadash has resided in Arden since 1991. She is a member of the New Castle County Master Gardeners program. Diana's area
of interest has been on the survival of the Monarch Butterfly and the restoration of its habitat.
If you have any questions, please contact either Maura Lynch or Barbara Conway at (302) 529-9464.

SCHOLARS GILD Bees and Butterflies – Conserving Our Pollinators
Tuesday, September 15, 7:30 PM
Bratten Room in Lower Gild Hall
On May 19, 2015, President Obama announced a “National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees
and other Pollinators” in response to widespread concerns about losses of honey bees, monarch butterflies,
and other pollinators. The National Strategy outlines three broad goals of increasing honey bee and monarch
populations, and restoring forage land for pollinators. Come hear about the reasons for pollinator population decline, and Delaware’s
plans to improve bee and pollinator health and safety. As September is National Honey Month, a honey tasting will be included. Join
the Scholars for what promises to be an interesting and a sweet discussion led by Faith B. Kuehn, Ph.D. Beekeepers are invited to
bring samples of their own honey for tasting.
Since October 2001, Faith B. Kuehn has served as Environmental Program Administrator for the Delaware Department of
Agriculture’s Plant Industries. Specific program responsibilities include nursery inspection and certification, apiary licensing and
inspection, and surveys for noxious weeds and invasive species.
The Scholars Gild discussions are held at 7:30 PM on the third Tuesday of the month (except July and August) in the Bratten Room,
Lower Gild Hall. If you would like to receive email notifications and reminders, contact the Scholars Gild via
