SECTION TWO: INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Working with the responsibilities was not as such simple thing. Because of we are new for the practi-cal world. We must be oriented to this responsibil-ity.

The first thing our office supervisor helped as to be-came oriented with the responsibilities was on the evaluation period. By the time he consults as 4-5 times per day, and he will tell as the real time design process, architectural practices, time management and Ethiopian standards. After this all we became familiar with the responsibilities.

Practicing our responsibilities with the other works in the office we became more oriented in under-standing and applying our responsibilities in any designs projects.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY MAJOR DUTIESOn the first two weeks we are not assigned to the major duty. Instead the first two weeks at the office was eval-uation weeks. Since our advisor have no clue about our skill, he gave as an assignment to design a G+10 Mixed Use building by following all the design steps.

After we complete our evaluation project successfully. We were assigned to the major office duties. This in-cludes

• Designing

• Preparation of Presentation.

In general in this internship program we have tried to cover all the basic works which are related to Architec-ture.

In succeeding any of our projects our supervisor Architect Dereje Gashaw plays a great role. He assist as with full of willingness.

When we are working with our projects he give as an advice 4-5 per day. Not only this he will provide as with some useful documents which will help as making our assignment. This document include any related completed de-signs projects, Ethiopian Building Code, Literature review, site analysis, site location maps and so on. For example when we are working office designs, as a reference material he will give as completed office design projects. So referring professional jobs will greatly support as in finish any of our projects.

Generally our supervisor assist as in every aspect include below:

Educational tour:

• Preparing and facilitating tour in bole international airport passenger ter-minal .in which support as like a case study in preparing Semera and Robe domestic airport passenger terminals and ATC tower.

• Conducting a visit for the proposal design of NIB international bank and in-surance design competition exhibition.

Experience sharing:

• In participating on the Semera and Robe Passenger terminal design propos-als presentation held at Ethiopian Airports Enterprise meeting room.

Improving our Practical skillBy working in such a big design company we have improved our practical skill on many sec-tors of work in the office.

Some of the practical skills we have improved in the internship program are:

QUALITY IMPROVED BY THE INTERNSHIP

We practice real time design process in our every design assignment. From Information gathering to final preparation of design documents.

Working with many design helps us by increasing our building material knowledge.

Working with many projects we learned and greatly de-velop different types of pre-sentation approachs.

Operation of plotter, ...

Mostly in the office we use the latest and updated software, Like Revit Architecture 2015, AutoCAD 2015, ArchiCAD 18, Artlantis 5, Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator CC, Ado-be Indesign CC, Adobe Light-room, . As a result of this we learn many new softwares, and more familiar with the one we use before.

Interpersonal skills are the life skills we use every day to com-municate and interact with other people, individually and in groups.

Interpersonal skills include not only how we communicate with others, but also our confidence, and our ability to listen and understand. Problem solving, decision making and per-sonal stress management are also considered interpersonal skills.

At the beginning of the Internship program we were very afraid to approach the employees in the office; our contact was only with our supervisor and with the General Man-ager. But as time goes we improve our interpersonal communication skill.

In the last four months we have been interacting with many company workers who have different work behavior and experience, from this we have got an understanding on how to approach and talk peoples so as smooth commu-nication can be held between each other.

From our internship experience we can say that inter-personal communication is crucial to efficiently finish any design projects, which involves large number of man-power in different section of work. That is there should be efficient communication between all work crews like Drafts-man, Quantity Surveyor, Structural Engineer, Electrical Engi-neer, Sanitary Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, and so on. For example design

In addition we have learnt how to become active listener and to be assertive to express my idea freely.

As we already know design needs more experience than theoretical knowledge, and since this practic-ing worker we did not get the opportunity to work in any leadership areas. But working as an in intern-ship student we have got an understanding on the leadership skill.

All the works in the design and construction com-pany need a leader with ability to motivate all the workers toward a common goal. The main aim of having leadership skill is to lead all the workers to get a specific output.

When we were working on the office there was a General Manager called Engineer Kassahun Mamo, who leads most of the office work. Even though is difficult to control manpower and work activity; but with his great leadership skill Engineer Kassahun Mamo has efficiently controlled all the manpower and over all work activity. Engineer Kassahun have good relation with all the workers and he never say bad things to the works when they made mistake, he only gives them advice how they should work and he was also punctual in work.

Improving Interpersonal Communication Skill Improving leadership skill

Page 16: Architecture Internship Final Report

11

As we have noticed in the internship program team playing skill is very important for efficient work. Almost all the works in the design process need team playing skill. For example in working any design the Architect needs active collaboration with the Structural Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Sanitary Engineer and Mechanical Engineer; if there is lack of coordination between all the workers they can’t do their work efficiently. This we can say that team playing skill is very important in building design process.

The team that have improved our team playing skill was design and structural team. Working in these two sectors of the company we have improved our team playing skill and in addition to work together we have got good friends who have helped as in the internship program.

Team Playing skill Work Ethics

In the internship program I have understood on the work ethics that all workers should fol-low. Some of the work ethics that all the employees should follow are

• Punctuality

• Reliability

• Accountability

• Loyalty

• and responsibility

SECTION THREE: SPECIFIC JOB INFORMATION TECHNICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The main technical duties that we took during in our internship session are mainly large scale projects. This needs more time and skill. For example projects like Textile Factory, Steel Factory, Airport Passenger Terminals and ATC Towers, Guest Houses, mixed use, ho-tel and Offices.

So these projects will be done daily according to the work flow schedule. Which means this project will take a week even sometimes a month. As a result of this we don’t have daily activities, instead we took a job that take up may be a week or a month.

The specific jobs we are assigned in all over the internship session in mainly on

Design:

• This job includes active participation in any design activities like TOR revision, Information Gathering, Concept Development, Form Development, Schemat-ic Design and Preliminary Design.

Preparation of Presentation:

• Mainly producing 3D and floor plan renderings and preparing presentation documents.

• During in our internship session we are ordered to make a design and produce the presentation for the clients.

ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT

Concepts are ideas identified by designers as a foundation for giving form to a space, building and / or a site. In this particular project, even though the idea of “flying” has its own powerful influence, we are more concerned on the area, the land, the people, the culture and the environment, so that to come up with a result which is more simple and highly functional but a distinctive feature in harmony with its surrounding.

Land EvironmentPeople

and Culture

It has areas below sea level as deep as 116meters. Rainfall is minimum at an aver-age of 120mms. The high temperature and

low rainfall provokes.

Their dwelling is mostly a hut made of armature of boughs bound with palm fibers and covered with mat, which is easy and convenient for erection, dismantling and transporting.

Most of the surface is flat, covered by overflowed lava from volcanoes

Dome forms reduce concentration of sun rays, concrete is strong enough to resist high

temperature, large interior volumes and spaces maximize air circulation and wid-er openings around the building let wind

crossing inside and as a result help create an ambient interior atmosphere with respect to

the outside.

CONCLUSION

SECTION FOUR: CONCLUSIONHaving experience in internship work, we can tell that internship is the best Way to improve students understand-ing of the real physical system or practical engineering works. So we recommend the concerned body to improve this internship work to better extent so that students get chance to work in different projects to observe and learn different things

• Improving our Practical skill

• Improving interpersonal communication skill

• Team Playing Skill

• Improving leadership skill

• Work Ethics

We clearly observed some problems in the internship program, and we recommended the following advices.

• The internship must have Grade.

• The money given to students is not enough.

• The department follow up is so poor.

• Now a day most of the consultancy offices use Modern Architectural softwares and other additional graph-ics softwares. So the students must have enough knowledge with these softwares before starting their in-ternship session in which helps the students to succeed their internship period successfully
