This is even more true for the modular synthesizer, both hardware and software, that faced anincredible reneissance in the last two decades. It’s not uncommon to havemultiple voices, built byconnectingmanydifferentmodules, goingonatonceduringaperformanceorinthestudio.

More and more, the chromatic keyboard, even augmented with pressure sensitivity and otherexpressivefeature,isbecomingalimitation,especiallywhenpartsoftheperformancearemoresound-design oriented thanmelodic. Being able to play notes, configure sequencers and arpeggiators, andchangingsubtlefeaturesintheongoingsoundfromasinglephysicalinterface, isthekeymotivationthatledustothedevelopmentof(arches).

KEYBOARDS

(arches) introduces the concept of virtual keyboard by grouping single elements and integrating theoutputinformationonakeyboardconcept.Thekeyboardscanbeconfiguredtosuityourharmonicandmelodicneedsandtouseanyofthepossiblestandardtointerfacewithyoursystems.

Typicallyakeyboardisasetofelementswhereyouhavedefinedthenotes(pitches)ofevery‘key’.Youhave three information comingoutof every keyboard: pitch, gate information andexpression.Whilethis istrue intheanalogrealm(andonthe jackbay), thistranslatesabitdifferent intheMIDIrealm, with the expression substituted by note on/note offs and the velocity information. Velocity andexpressionare linked toeither fingerposition (for thesliders)and fingerpressure (for theupper rowbuttons).

An interesting consequences of the expression behavior is that it’s retainedwhile the arpeggiator isrunning.Ifyouareusingmoreoctavesinthearpeggiator,thevelocityofthenotewillberepeatedforthehigheroctaves.
